Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A 1950's rebuild. Not to our taste, and showing signs of decay. Much building work across the square (Marktplatz) Neat clock, bells for clock and ? a carillion. Inside foyer staff were not welcoming; they do not know that some architecture fans might seek this place out.
Somewhere under the square is Stuttgarts last remaining bunker - open very rarely; could not even find the entrance or any information. Nice cafe to the left; which is also the way to the BeanDistrict.

Unfortunately the 1905 late gothic city hall that used to be at the same position had been destroyed in the Second World War.
Unfortunately the post-war council in Stuttgart decided to not rebuild the old building (as the government in Munich successfully did) but to build this “modern” ugly eye-sore. This is just one of many unfortunate city development decisions that happened after the war and one of the reasons why cities like Munich are still huge tourist attractions and Stuttgart ... is not.
The only interesting thing in this big concrete box is one of the few remaining still running paternoster elevators in Germany.
During Christmas time the Rathaus is decorated like a huge advent calendar, which makes it a little less hideous for at least one month of the year.

It's kind of ugly, 'used to be modern' building, nothing you'd really look for. Compared to other jewels you can see in Stuttgart, this one is not worth a trip. We ended up there mostly by accident, on our way from the castle, expecting similar architecture there and it was quite disappointing, like the rest of the square.

Never seen a Paternoster lift before...
Fun! Not to be missed!
Closed on Saturday.
It absolutely worths a visit.
I daresay this is the only one accessible to visitors, not only in Stuttgart - there are more Paternoster elevators in town and in Germany but not operating anymore or likely not accessible for tourists.

After the war, the old neogothic exterior was mostly hidden behind tile; you can still see some of the old building in the back, while the facade is not particularly nice.

We didn't explore the Rathaus we only went to ride the elevator that operates on a chain, has no doors, and doesn't stop. You get on and off as it moves. Worth a quick stop in for the experience... where else will you be able to experience that?

The bottom line is, have a reason to go. The Rathaus is not really an attraction, and certainly not the most beautiful building in the city. However, in December the bulk of the Christmas Markets are found in the square just outside of the Rathaus. I would definitely recommend going there for the best Stuttgart Christmas Market experience. The Rathaus is also a great place to go for small concerts and productions. There's also some cool displays of miniatures in the halls when you walk around - but again, don't go unless you have a specific purpose.

As another reviewer stated, this has to be one of the ugliest town halls in all of Germany!!! If they wanted a modern, functional, affordable structure WHY put it on a historically important square??? Ugly as a descriptor is being kind!!!

Have been a number of times. Interesting exhibit inside but not a must see. Striking building which is even more impressive with either the Saturday market below or during Christmas when the Christmas market is in the platz

I have visited dozens upon dozens of German cities and the Rathaus is nearly alway's the centre piece and focal point of the city.
Here in Stuttgart the Rathaus is a modern building that in all truth and my opinion is rather bland when compared to the Rathaus in citie's such as Cologne, Bremen but it does have its charm.
The architecture is interesting and the building is eyecatching.
A nice landmark building and well worth checking out.
