Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Yes, it is big! Big enough that you can climb stairs and stand in a platform on top, which is a great photo opportunity. Don't get distracted by the smaller (still quite large) barrel just before you encounter this one. Restrooms nearby. The history is also quite interesting.

This enormous 221K liter barrel took 131 large oak trees to build.
Apparently it didn't last long, why?
Apparently a historical example of the waste of so many natural resources.
Today everyone comes to see it, I really wonder why?

The large barrel for storing wine has now become one of the most curious tourist attractions in Heidelberg. The wooden barrel, which can contain approximately 220,000 litres, is located in the cellars of the castle and its real dimensions can only be realized by walking around it, using the appropriate walkways. Also visible in the cellars is another barrel, a little smaller but equally impressive.

The Heidelberg Tun is a monstrous wine barrel located in the Heidelberg Castle, built in 1751, reputedly requiring 130 oak trees in the construction. It's approximately 8 meters in diameter and holds 229,000 liters. Some claim it's the largest in the world, but even if not, it's one huge barrel! You can climb stairs alongside and even walk on a platform built on top of the barrel. Amusingly, unaware tourists inevitably line up for photos of another (very) large barrel in the room before the Heidelberg Tun, thinking it's the one. While, it's also massive, it pales in comparison to the real deal and you'll hear tourists shriek in amazement when they encounter the real "big daddy"!

This giant massive wine barrel which holds close to 58 gallons of wine is impressive. I would say it is the largest wine barrel that I have ever seen.

It's almost hard to believe how the German people came to love their wine so much that they built grand barrels for storage. All this time I though the Germans only loved beer, now I know differently!

Note: this is part of the Castle admission and is not a stand alone attraction. Yes this is interesting and there is a good viewing platform but is still just a very large wine barrel. Some of the stairs on the viewing platform could be hard to handle if you have challenges walking or with small children.

If you are visiting the castle make sure you stop by and check out the turn. We almost made the mistake of thinking the first barrel was the turn after you see that one walk around the corner and down the steps it is impressive
