Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I liked the chapel inside the Abbey grounds. It is a holy and reverent place to sit and meditate, pray, worship. The Cistercien Abbey is at the end of Lichtentaller Allee. It is an easy stroll along the beautiful sights of Lichtentaller Allee and the river Oos. We walked to it and also rode bikes there one other time.

The Cistercian nunnery “Lichtenthal Abbey” is in the town of Baden-Baden (Germany) at about 25 minutes walk from the city center.
It’s a very interesting ensemble formed by several abbey and domestic buildings standing around a quiet and pleasant triangular courtyard with a fountain in the middle. For acceding to the courtyard one must go through an impressive gateway dating back from the eighteenth century. Among the said buildings the religious ones are the abbey church, the Prince’s Chapel and the hermit chapel. There is also an interesting museum.
In the Gothic abbey church there are some remarkable works of art and furnishings. It’s a single nave church in gothic style. The stated works are particularly a crucifix hanging from the vault, a colourfully painted stone pulpit, a predominant statue of the Virgin with the Child, a small statue of flagellated Christ at a niche in a wall and artful carved choir stalls. The stained-glass windows are also very nice especially those in the choir.
The Prince’s Chapel, built in the thirteenth century, was destined to serve as the burial place for the Margraves of Baden. They were the Holy Roman Empire military commanders. Margravine Irmengard is also buried in that church next to her husband’s – Hermann V – grave.
The hermit chapel is used as a mortuary chapel for the nuns.
Only the yard and the abbey church are freely accessible. As to the visit to the Prince’s Chapel and the museum it’s necessary to be taken on a guided tour. The tour timetable is rather untimely actually. The tour takes place only three days a week at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Despite that inconvenience, it’s worth visiting the place and enjoying the peace which can be felt in the courtyard. Besides, the walk from the city center to Lichtenthal is also worthwhile particularly because when strolling the shortest way along the Lichtentaller Allee one goes past two other interesting churches in Baden-Baden: the Russian Orthodox Church and the Evangelische Lutherkirche which, should the occasion arise, could also be visited.

Very close to downtown and a beautiful walk along the Lichtentaller Allee. We missed the tour, but spent some time in the Chapel. It is a beautiful old building, and the interior has lots of modern touches, but there is a remnant of a 13th century fresco and my favorite thing, a bas-relief of what looks like a knight in chain mail. After the fact, I did bit of Internet research and found that the place was built to hold the remains of a leader who took part in the 5th Crusade.

I'm sorry to say this was not an enjoyable overnight stay and we would not recommend tourists stay here. We were enticed by the idea of staying in a beautiful sanctuary, as well as the cheaper price compared to hotels in Baden Baden. However, this is a working abbey, not a hotel catering to the comfort of its guests. We arrived almost to the minute of when we had said we would arrive, only to find the "office" (the bookstore, if I remember right) closed up tight with no note or indication of what we were supposed to do. We spent the next 2 hours sitting on a bench in the blazing sun trying to figure out what to do. Apparently the nun who was supposed to give us the key had closed up early to attend a church service. We were eventually able to track down instructions on how to get into our room, but by then it was too late to get anything to eat for supper (we would have to go outside the gates to find a restaurant and the gates closed at 8:00 pm - no admittance to the grounds after that time). The room was stifling hot and had very basic, uncomfortable beds. The church was locked up so we didn't get to see it. There was a nice breakfast the next day but it didn't make up for the uncomfortable sleep.

We've come here often to enjoy a coffee at the beautiful Café Lumen or simply take a leisurely stroll around the gardens. Today we then also ventured into the shop, where my Mum had the temerity to pick up a book and leaf through it. Just as she was about to take it over to the till to pay, the respectable-looking matron behind the desk barked at her to either purchase the thing or place it back, as my Mum was (apparently) the fifth browser for today, and that she, the matron, needed the book to stay in mint condition - which it was - in case someone actually decided to buy it.
Needless to say, we cleared her hallowed hall before you could have said "Hail Mary", leaving her and her immaculate tome for the delight of browser number 6.
I was going to remark that the Vatican diplomat that had described the Irish referendum outcome as a defeat for humanity had obviously never met her, but then decided not to stoop to her level. It must be punishing enough to just be her. I suppose Jesus loves her, but even he must find the gay spouses-to-be far more likeable.

My friend and I visited Baden Baden on a weekday back in early October and took this tour. This is an absolutely beautiful place to visit if you are a history lover. However - only go if you do not mind being ridiculed (if you are from the USA).
Our tour guide was a very well spoken, intelligent, and well versed older woman who advised us she had not spoken English for 50 years. She warned us the tour would not be in English because she could not speak it. That was completely fine with my friend and I as we were there to see and soak in the magnificent history of Baden Baden. The tour started out nicely until our guide began saying a few strikingly mean things about my friend and I (who are American) in English to us. One thing that stands out in my mind is a story she was telling the crowd in German about Queen Victoria. I know this because she had no problem telling us in English that we would not care to hear this story because we are Americans and only care about American history – to be specific we only care about things like the story of the Kennedys. I was in shock when she told us this, and nicely let her know that – no – we do care about all history – and would love to know more about what you have to say about Queen Victoria (especially now since you can obviously speak English quite clearly). Still, she refused, saying that we don’t care. What can you say to that? From that point on we continued to enjoy the beauty around us and take as many pictures as we could – and of course read up on the history after the tour because we in fact DO care about the history there. So again, lovely place to see – but if you get the same tour guide we did and are American– brace yourself and enjoy the comments!

The visit was extremely interesting and rewarding. Tickets: just 3€. Unfortunately, if you don't understand German it will be of less use, as they do not offer the visited tour in english. What a pity!

A lovely place at the end of the long beautiful walk. I recommend visiting - though when I arrived unfortunately the chapel was closed.

The serenity of this Abbey is felt in the lodgings - with hearty healthy breakfast - which it offers. Just a - beautiful - stroll yonder from the centre of Baden-Baden; along the Lichtenthal Allee, a meandering path along fields with beautiful flowers, and majestic trees, alongside the river.
The café serves excellent tea and cakes and more. Recommended!
