What an overpowering view when one alights from the funicular to see this impressive Basilique! to say nothing of the internal warmth and beauty of the internal structure! Be sure to visit the Crypt and view all of the different madonna statues or paintings from diverse nations. Any who has walked the Camino de Santiago will appreciate the impressive mosaic.

Beautiful, I recommend doing this experience. The church (or rather the churches) are very beautiful, from the top of the hill you can enjoy wonderful views of the city. I recommend getting on the funicular and getting off on foot to enjoy the route and the arrival of the old town

Wow! A must visit while in Lyon.

We took the funicular up to the church. It was a simple ride and the views from the grounds around the church offer great views of Lyon and the rivers.

The interior of the church is jaw-droppingly gorgeous, with intricate mosaics covering nearly every surface, each telling a story. Be sure to take in the crypt, too, which is beautiful in its own way.

We arrived relatively early, and I would recommend this as crowds were thin and it was easy to take great photographs.

The Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière is one of Lyon’s most stunning and iconic landmarks, offering an unforgettable experience both inside and out. Perched high on Fourvière Hill, this magnificent basilica not only boasts remarkable architecture but also provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city below.

The basilica’s exterior is a beautiful mix of neo-Byzantine and Romanesque styles, with intricate carvings, grand columns, and towering spires that make it a sight to behold. As you approach, you’re drawn to its sheer grandeur and the sense of history that surrounds it.

Inside, the basilica is equally impressive, with stunning mosaics, stained glass windows, and a sense of serenity that invites quiet reflection. The attention to detail is exceptional, and the interior’s vibrant colors and sacred atmosphere make it a truly awe-inspiring space. The crypt is also worth a visit, offering a more intimate yet equally beautiful setting.

One of the highlights of visiting Notre Dame de Fourvière is the incredible view from the hilltop. From the terrace, you can enjoy sweeping views of Lyon, including the Rhône River, the city’s historic districts, and the Alps in the distance. It’s a perfect spot for taking in the beauty of the city from above.

If you’re visiting Lyon, a trip to the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière is an absolute must. It’s not just a place of worship but a symbol of the city’s heritage and beauty, offering a peaceful escape and a glimpse into Lyon’s rich history.

Presiding over the city of Lyon is this Basilica of Notre Dame, the funicular climb is a very nice experience, especially if you take to stop at the incredible Roman ruins halfway, ruins of a Roman theater in the middle of the city.
Very nice the basilica, no cost entry, nice view over the city. Good cafe upstairs for a delicious mulled wine.

What a spectacle! When we left the station of the F1 funicular we found ourselves a fascinating sight, the facade of the Basilica. Imposing, majestic, beautiful. Free admission, inside for a moment I felt like I was at Notre Dame in Paris........ speechless. Take the time to visit it.
Leave early as the influx of tourists is endless, so queue up to show anything. Don't miss it!

Basilica "recent" seen its term only at the end of 1800, but loved by the people of Lyon and especially by tourists. The facade is beautiful, but its grandeur lies in the interior that seems chiseled in every aspect and the view of the city, really important. The basilica can be reached on foot, but there is a funicular that leads to its square.

While in Lyon our walking tour guide said we had to visit the Notre Dame and he was so right. This huge cathedral has an enormous lower level, crypt, that is fantastic in itself. Progressing through the main entrance you will notice the mosaic tile everywhere. It is on the floor and most of the walls. The ceiling is a peace of art and the altar is shielded in such beauty it is difficult to describe. The exterior has the Virgin Mary in gold and what looked like an angel looking over Lyon. This is a must see!

Built from 1872, it was inaugurated in 1896 but the interior decoration work was not completed until after the Second World War. A mystical citadel dedicated to the Virgin, it includes a very rich interior and exterior decor, including an important cycle of mosaics retracing the history of the Virgin in the history of France and in the history of the Church. The basilica is 86 m long by 35 m wide. Its height at the top of the towers is 48 m. Its organ was built in 1896 by Michel Merklin and restored in 1996.
Superb building worth a visit and incredible views of Lyon.
