We used the cable car as transport during our hike to TMB; it enabled us to ride down to Chamonix to spend the night there, then return to the trail the next morning. The price was relatively reasonable (€10.50 per person each way), and the base station is within walking distance of downtown Chamonix and our hotel.
The ride took less than 10 minutes and was an efficient way to avoid having to hike the long series of switchbacks that we could see below. The views right from the top aren't the best, but you don't need to hike up too far to get them. Even for a day trip, this would be a nice opportunity to get some height and see new perspectives on the mountains.

Terrible experience. Due to heavy wind the cable car was only partially operating and people was creating lines to return to base. Unfortunately this company has no “baby priority” policy and we was forced to wait outside in the freezing wind for over half an hour to get a position with a 2 year old baby on the next lift. We tried to stay in the warm of the restaurant till the next lift come but it seems the employee was very satisfied watching a baby screaming due to freezing temperatures outside, since he refused to give a priority at least to the mother and the kid. Congrats to your employees. Not family friendly. Should we avoid in winter.

Terrible expensive waste of time and money. The plan praz cable car up to the mid point was good, no crowds, no queue however the Brevente gondola to the top was a different story. There are only 2 large cars. One was not available for the public as it was being used by workers, so only half capacity for the public. We waited for 20 minutes to get up to the top, we were crammed into the gondola. At the top it was a work site, noisy because of the work, we couldn’t walk around because areas were barrister off, pallets and bags of materials lying around and an even bigger queue for the gondola to get back down. What a waste of time and money. They should have warned the public and reduced the price. Instead of giving people a bad experience.

It's a nice comfy ride up, the windows on the car's are fairly well scratched by the thousands of boards and skis that rest on them.
The base is nice but we paid 3euro for a medium bottle of evian. Plan ahead!

Almost everyone heads for the Aguille du Midi cable car on arrival in Chamonix - and for good reason, it's amazing. But it's also extremely busy with looong queues, delays for your ascent and a fixed turnaround time from the top. We know - we've done it!
Alternatively, the Brevent cable car is a great option. Reason? Simple - the views from the summit across to Mont Blanc are stunning. You can sit outside on the terrace of the restaurant at the top station and feast your eyes on Mont Blanc, the surrounding mountains and the Aguille du Midi top station itself. The view of Mont Blanc itself is actually clearer from this perspective than from the Aguille du Midi station.
And, as a bonus, the Brevent Cable car is quieter! Our previous trip up the Aguille du Midi was exciting but the car was full to the brim - think London Underground in rush hour (although not as bad as a Venetian Water Bus in the Summer).
Here's some practical guidance so you get the most from your trip. Firstly, choose a nice day. In fact, if possible, choose a nice morning. There is almost no point paying your money and making the ascent if it's cloudy as you will see nothing. Temper your enthusiasm and be patient. Planning ahead helps - check out the online weather forecast for the week and target a promising day for your trip. Mornings are better because, in this area, cloud accumulates in the afternoon. Clear blue skies are what you're seeking.
The bottom station is towards the northern edge of Chamonix. There is plenty of car parking in a multistory under the cable car itself. The cost is very reasonable. I think it is 2€ for the first hour and 2€ for every two hours thereafter. Take a ticket on entry, pay when you return at the machine (cards and cash accepted) before exiting at the barrier. The car park spaces and access routes are reasonably wide so your beloved alloy wheels should survive the experience!
You can buy your tickets on arrival for the cable car. We bought returns to the very top but you can just travel to the mid-station, take a one way ticket or ascend in this cable car and descend on the Flegere after taking the 2hr Balcony walk along the side of the mountain between the two. Just explain what you want to the cashier. Keep your tickets safe, you need to pop them in the card readers at each stage of your journey.
The first stage is a gondola system (small, 6-8 person cars). Modern, no queuing and a nice ascent. At the mid-station there is a snack bar, a restaurant and (just out of immediate sight on a ridge just above the mid-station) another restaurant. The toilets at the mid-station are modern and very clean.
The next stage is on the traditional, Brevent cable car. There are two cars. You walk along, step inside and wait for a few minutes until it's time to go. You don't wait long and it's fun. Don't worry about where to stand in the car - almost everyone gets a lovely view and, even if you're in the middle, the views from the top station trump anything you might see from inside the cable car so don't despair and keep your manners! There is really no need to join the herd! And don't forget to carry your backpack by the side of you on the cable car as it's bad practice to whack someone standing near you as you turn with your backpack!
The top cable car is the most spectacular. There are no pylons on this section as it straddled with just one span. So, after the little swing as you begin, it's smooth with no stomach wrenching zero-gravity experience although it is near vertical on ascent to the top station. Each car has a trained employee inside with you which is reassuring for those of a nervous disposition. You'll probably see climbers on the rock face as you ascend and maybe they'll even be a few with their ropes sharing the cabin with you on your journey.
At the top is another restaurant with an open terrace and amazing views. We found the service to be friendly and we had morning coffee and cakes. Very nice. We took our time, enjoyed the experience and the superb views of the valley and mountain range before descending after a short walk.
Walking around the summit requires sturdy shoes. It's rough underfoot and trainers just are not good enough. It's also probably wise to pop a pullover in your backpack in case it's chilly at the top. If you're walking far then you will need water, a waterproof jacket etc.
If your not planning to walk then, together with refreshments at the top station, it's a half day excursion. Recommended and very enjoyable.
By way of perspective, a trip up to the Aguille du Midi is probably one of your 'top fifty' things to do in your life! It's hugely exciting, the views across the snow-capped mountain summits to the south are breathtaking and the top station itself is like no other. This trip, using the Brevent cable car, is not like that - it is quieter, not quite so heart stopping but with stunning views of Mont Blanc that you cannot get when at the Aguille du Midi. A coffee or lunch at the top station will be a better experience and a little cheaper too. Importantly, you won't be crushed into a cable car with lots of noisy, excitable kids and family pets.
Both trips are excellent but they are different. Do both! You'll do the Aguille du Midi first - everyone does and for good reason. We did! But Brevent is a worthy trip in its own right too.
Have a lovely time. To be in a position to visit Chamonix and ascend any of these amazing cable cars to the mountain tops is a wonderful thing. Enjoy it with friends, family or just go solo and do some reflective thinking about the amazing planet we inhabit.

How can you fault a ride that takes your dog up to a level where she can find snow in July! The views of Mt Blanc are terrific and the cool air when the valley is at 35cent+ is very welcome.

We decided to go up the Brevent Cable car as it was another beautifully sunny day and we had a multi pass. We parked at the St Michael car park in Chamonix but then we had to hike up a very steep street in the blazing midday sun to get to the cable car station. And when we got there we found a perfectly good car park we could have used instead! Although I don’t know for sure whether there were any spaces when we arrived at 12pm.
There were toilets at the cable car station, and some people were filling their water bottles from a tap. There was a little vendor selling coffee etc. There was also a cafe nearby. There were booths selling tickets (ie multi passes/single day passes et ) but the queues weren’t bad at all compared with Aguillie de midi. Probably about 10 minutes’ wait.
The cable car went up the mountain very steeply and the boys (aged 5 and 7) loved it. There was virtually no queue despite it being such glorious weather (it was a Friday in August so maybe it is more busy on the weekends). It was hot inside the cable car though as it was such a warm day. There was just our family in the cable car although you could fit a few more people in if needed when it’s busy.
When we got to the top the views, as usual when we go up cable cars in Chamonix, were spectacular and breathtaking. It was a good place to see paragliders as the paragliders jump off this part of the mountain and you can usually just see them as dots floating in the sky above Chamonix but up here on the mountain they were proper sized people zooming around in the air. It was great to watch.
It was a bit cooler up the mountain but still roasting hot. We were just wearing shorts and t shirts with walking boots - other people seemed to have dressed for winter but had to peel all their layers off.
We had a strange meal at the Comptoir snack bar where the children’s meals came with ice cream plus a ‘surprise’ according to the menu. But when I asked what the surprise was I was told that the ice cream was the surprise. This was indeed surprising as I had assumed from the menu that the ice cream was included for children anyway and they’d get a surprise as well. Fortunately my boys accepted the fact that the surprise was the ice cream they were already expecting. The whole menu was a bit confusing to be honest but I muddled through with the order somehow - you go inside to order and pay (they accepted credit cards) and then you get something which buzzed when your cooked food is ready so you go in to collect it from the serving counter. Then we had to go back later for the ice creams for the children - I showed my receipt to the man at the serving counter and he told me which ice creams I could pick out of the ice cream freezer. There were toilets at the cafe.
Upstairs was a restaurant as opposed to a cafe. And nearby there was a bar which mostly sold drinks and sweet things. There’s also an odd looking diagonal lift which takes you a bit further up the mountain. I thought it was just for people wanting to go up to the restaurant there but in fact it just helps you get up a part of the hill and there’s another viewing platform and good places to see the paragliders jump off the mountain.
Then we went up a different bigger cable car which takes up to 60 people in it and is manned. We had to show our multi pass again here. It was sort of more like going across from one mountain peak to another which was higher up rather than going straight up a mountainside.
It was very hot in the cable car and standing room only.
Again, there were amazing views but not that many railings and barriers so I had hard work trying to keep my 5 year old from peering over the edges whilst my husband took all his photos. Not my favourite bit of the day but it was very spectacular if you don’t mind precipitous edges. I think there may have been a bar/cafe here as well as the little outside vendor selling snacks - the tables and chairs were reserved for those customers. I didn’t see any toilets up at this point but there may have been some I didn’t see.
Lots of people had climbing gear and when we went down in the cable car we could see them all climbing up and down the mountainside. Not my cup of tea but fun to see them.
There was no queue at all for the cable car either at the top or the bottom.
I think my husband wanted to hike down the mountain back to the car in Chamonix which would have been about 2 hours according to the sign, but I wasn’t sure how steep it would be for the children so I persuaded him we should get the cable car down so we could go swimming instead and cool down rather than hike in the blazing heat.

Excellent option to take the teleferic to Brevent instead of Aiguille du Midi, both in Chamonix. Less waiting time and great view to Mont Blanc and surrounding.

We almost didn’t go based on the price tag (which is high, even for a resort area—I believe we could have done a two for one that would have helped). However, the view at the top and the hiking opportunities it begins are totally, completely worth it.

If purchasing a return ticket is this open for more than a day as we will be starting and finishing the TMB with wanting to use cable car up and then back down after finishing TMB?

Hello, we are currently hiking the TMB and are happy you extended the closing date for Planpraz this year so we can return to Chamonix on September 16 via the gondola. Will we be able to purchase tickets at Planpraz? I attempted on line and was unable to. Thank you!

Hi, I think the 1500mtr walk just from the bottom of the Brevent would be too much for a 5 year old, it would be 6.5km journey in from Chamonix centre to the very top, then you would have to get back down.
Perhaps consider walking from Chamonix to the bottom cable car along the nice path that follows the stream then taking the cable car at the bottom of the Brevent to Planpraz at 2000mtr, you would then only have the remaining 525mtrs to get to the top, should be ok this time of the year, I was there in September and crampons would have been useful.

From memory it was 80 to 90 euros for a family of four. I’m sure their website will give exact prices.

Hello we are currently in Geneva and I was planning on going to Chamonix and Mont Blanc but as far as I know the cable car to the top is closed. Is the Brevent Cable Car a different compnay and do they operate to the top ? I have tried to look at their website but it doesn’t seem to be in English ? How do i get the tickets ?
