Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The scenery is absolutely stunning and the water is extremely clear. Would definitely this place in that regard however there is very little else. The only restaurant is Cash only and you need a reservation, it is also quite expensive - giving limited options for food. The beach is also way too busy (understandably) so there is little to no space, would suggest going early.
That being said, if you bring food and water with you; and arrive before 12 then it’s a great day out!

Yesterday we did the hike to the Calanque with 3 children. It was strenuous but doable with children in about 2 hours. However, we were then intercepted by a security guard at the bottom and were not allowed to go to the beach because of the fire hazard (because it was too windy). The locals and tourists with rented accommodation were allowed to stay there as normal.
We had to turn around straight away and go back up the steep hill without stopping to catch our breath. We weren't allowed to call a taxi either. What torture! Especially for the children. There were no barriers or signs along the way. Only at the very end of the long hike! That's an imposition! So be careful in the wind!

A beautiful beach with warm turquoise waters. It is well worth the 45 minutes walk each way which is over a large hill. Apparently the restaurant serves wonderful food but you need to book ahead which we didn’t do.

Frankly level view we are served is super beautiful. But big downside the world that there is even early in the morning and another that may have been talked about by no one is the presence of seaweed in large numbers and jellyfish!
We could not enjoy the water because big and small jellyfish was right in front of our feet..

My husband and I went to Calanques des Sormiou in June 2017. The weather was 29 degrees, sunny and not a cloud in sight.
Let me explain how to get to this magestical place from Marseille via public transport.
Catch Bus 23 from Metro Rond Point du Prado. The cost of a return ticket is 4 euros. Make sure you have cash with you as the bus does not accept card payments.
Stop off at bus stop called La Coyalle. This bus stop is in a residential area. The trek from the bus stop to the Calanques takes exactly an hour. If you walk along the winding road, I would say it takes much longer than an hour.
Please wear good trekking shoes, not flip flops or sandals as the track has lots of loose rocks and can get slippery if you miss a step or walk on the wrong rock.
Take plenty of drinking water and also take some food as there is no cafe's and only one restaraunt. There is a restaraunt at the Calanques called Le Chateau. The only way you can eat here is if you have a reservation. The restaraunt does however sell bottled water for 2 euros and also sells other drinks (coke, alcohol). If you do decide to purchase a drink, take enough cash with you as they don't accept cards.
If you have a car, you can drive to the bottom where the trek begins. You will have to leave your car at the bottom and walk an hour to the Calanques. There is a car park right at the beach, however the gate was locked when we arrived. There are several workers who patrol the gates and the cars that do pass through seem to be showing some sort of paperwork to them (maybe these are locals who pay to use the parking lot or are locals that access the Calanques). Even if you were to drive, the road is extremely narrow and two cars cannot pass. I would not recommend you drive all the way to the Calanques.
The trek is exhausting, tiring and challenging if you are someone that doesn't excercise and is not fit. However what I can say is that once you reach the bottom of the Calanques, it is totally worth it. The water is a little cold at first when you get in, however once too start moving around it's really nice. The views of the mountains while you are in the water is amazing and the water is clear. There were some parts of the Calanques where it was a little un clean (rubbish such as wrappers and cigarette butts), however it was generally clean.
I would recommend anyone who is visiting Marseille to visit this beautiful place. It is a place that is worth visiting and worth the walk.

The guys that are controling the access to the Calanque resume their job to open the door or not to the cars to pass.
No one informe you that to go walking, you have at least 45 minutes until arrive to the beach, and to come back another 45 minutes, no one tells you too that there is no water down there, if you need to drink so water, prepare yourself to pay an expensive botlle of water in one of the restaurantes, and if you just have your credit card and no liquid, prepare to die thirsty.
Its also not possible to eat there, at 12:15 all the restaurantes are full, we discovered after that people reserve the restaurantes so they can pass with the cars in the gate.
And pay good atention not to let your car parked there (before the gate) after 18PM, cause there is people that robe the cars and even burn them.

The Beach is to reach by car or public transport combined with a hike of 40 minutes. From metro station Rond Point du Prado you take the bus nr. 22 to Les Baumettes. A red marked hike leads to the beach. The landscape is nice and pretty - the water is very clear and warm but refreshing after the hike. The beach itself is a little disappointing. Its very small and narrowed, so people are squeezing to fit. There is only a restaurant not a snack bar and chemical toilets. It was okay especially having in mind that is so close to the city but I am not sure if I would go again.

Thoroughly enjoyable walk to viewing point. We didn't descend but nevertheless we were 'wowed' by the experience. Found useful tips for getting there on previous reviews but were left with concerns about how easy we ( a couple in our 60s) would find it. We needn't have worried, unless you descend and therefore have to climb back up it is not difficult. In fact on the day we visited there was a group of very young children, 3 and 4 year olds with some very brave staff! The walk itself was interesting, through woods and then out onto the cliffs.
The deep turquoise of the sea below contrasting with the white of the rock was stunning! The weather was not brilliant the day we went and I imagine the views would be even better on a clear day.

Well worth going, I highly recommend it. Bring 4.50 euro, cash for parking (maybe more in peak season, but that was what we paid in October) Upon reading the reviews of the Calanques we chose this one as you can drive up to it and we have a toddler who would not be able to do the hike described in the other reviews. It is not at all far from the centre of Marseille, maybe a half hour drive. The road is very small and windy, but not unlike other roads that run along the Southern European coast. You should approach the corners with caution and honk. There are many spots where 2 cars will not be able to pass so you may need to back up a bit to find a passable area. It looks like there are restaurants that may be open in the summer, but if you are going in the off season you will need to bring everything with you. This is a very tiny beach area, with a beautiful spot to swim, some hiking trails as well. I would imagine it would be very difficult to get a spot if you did not go early in the day if it was summer. There are a few stairs to get down to the beach, don't bother trying to bring your stroller past the parking area, it's not worth it.

Merci.
Written 5 May 2018
