The MuCEM itself had super interesting architecture ... large modern block enclosed by interesting metal work and a nice rooftop terrace to relax with a drink and take it the expansive views of the old port. However, the inside exhibits were not terribly interesting and IMO, didn’t live up to hype.

This is in a prime location adjacent to the old port buildings (shopping and restaurants) and Cathedrale la Majore.

The clear highpoint of this museum complex was the integration with the historical Fort Saint-Jean and the surrounding gardens which were representative of multiple Mediterranean cultures. We spent much more time on the fort grounds than inside the MuCEM. The two sites were connected by a neat skywalk.

Recommend going for the old fort if you’re into ruins and experience led stone forts (no entrance fees). Go in the MuCEM (fee) only if there’s a temporary exhibit that interests you.... or if it’s blazing hot and you want a break from the heat.

Quite frankly the museum itself does not make any sense and certainly not worth the price they charge. It is nothing more than a collection of random facts and biased interpretation thereof from across the Mediterranean explained in a very superficial way. Wikipedia provides a better service. Not a museum by my standards.

Thank you for your message, your feedback is essential to help us improve. The Mucem is the museum where popular art, Europe and the Mediterranean are all themes tackled through the major issues of our current societies. The exhibitions combine fine arts, anthropology, history, archeology and contemporary art and are often off the beaten track, to arouse curiosity and reflection on our current and past civilizations. To find out more about who we are, I invite you to visit our site in the “10 questions / answers” section which will help you better understand what Mucem is, and in particular what a museum of company, and where our collections come from. Best regards.

I don’t understand why there’s so much fuss about this museum? The permanent collection includes a bizarre exhibit on food (with questionable dietary claims) and another exhibit with photographs of other Mediterranean cities. There are very few objects of historical significance. The best part of the Mucem is the old fort, which one can visit for free. I would recommend only visiting the fort and not paying the €11 entrance fee to visit the permanent and temporary exhibits.

If you want to learn about the history of the city and it’s historical role in Mediterranean trade, visit the Musée d’histoire de Marseille: it’s free and it has countless Greek, Roman, and Gaul artifacts! Much better than the Mucem.

This museum is hyped in all the guide books but I must be missing something - it was a confusing non entity for me. Now I don’t know if that’s because of my lack of French or that I visited in November, but I couldn’t find anything to look at!

The building is very impressive - the old fort and the new J4 block with outside bridges over bits of the port. You could argue it’s worth just to go and see that and you get a great vantage point to view and take photos of Marseille and Vieux Port.

However, the map is confusing, the signage is confusing and it didn’t lead to any exhibition except one that was a paid for event. I might not have minded paying but it was not clear what I might see!

I had a coffee on the terrace which was probably the highlight then I left. Would not recommend for anything other than the city views.

From the two sections of the museum, only the Mediterranean civilizations section is interesting, I would say. And again I noticed the lack of English translation everywhere, like other museums I've been in Marseille. Even the English audioguide you can purchase for extra doesn't help a lot. People of the museum need to add extra signs in English to help visitors learn and understand the history. To be honest place looks interesting, but if you cannot read French you have no chance to leave with a positive experience from this place.

Before we went we couldn't work out what kind of museum this is - art/history? I understand it was built for Marseille's tenure as European City of Culture and it is apparently a museum of Mediterranean culture. I love museums, and this is not a good one. The architecture is gorgeous and its rooftops and juxtaposition to le Fort Saint Jean is all great to visit, highly recommend, but the exhibitions are dull. There's a room about Mediterranean food which is obvious and the displays about cities of the mediterannean is like something out of junior school. I also had a big issue with the English translations, French can be a flowery, overwritten language and the translations, for a world class museum are disappointing, and often difficult to understand - more like transliteration than translation. Why didn't they get a native English speaker to translate?

Seems like a compound of old buildings. Nice enough to stroll around for a bit, but for all the hype there wasn't much acutal activity. There was an exhibition on the history of (I think) jogging pants and tank tops, but nothing seemed interesting enough to pay for. There was an empty and expensive patio restaurant if that appeals to you. There were some small gardens on the grounds, and lots of paths and old corridors to walk through. The free 'exhibition' on the history of Marseille was just a video screen hidden behind an unmarked door. Views were OK. Overall it justs seems like a giant make-work project- much more staff loafing about than visitors. If I were a taxpayer here though, I'd be quite upset at the lack of content! So if you're in the area, it's worth a look-around but don't expect much else.

We chose Mucem because it looked interesting and the situation close to the old port was ideal to see some of Marseille on a day trip. We started from the old port entrance to Fort St Jean which gets you straight into the best bits of the site. The layout is slightly confusing and the signage is quite poor but we managed to find our way around and got some fantastic views of the old port area and out to sea. Whichever way you go into the site, you will have to go through security which seemed a bit over the top - it’s not as bad as other reviewers have suggested but it’s not a great welcome. Apart from that, the staff were nice and friendly.
The actual museum parts of the site were really quite disappointing. Considering the space available, there really isn’t that much to it and most of what there is quite strange in terms of content and layout. There is quite a lot of English text but not quite enough to get the most out of the exhibits. Part of the museum scattered around the fort area which is just confusing. You only have to pay for the museum exhibits - you can wander round the site for free and just have to show your ticket at the entrance to the exhibit areas.
We would go again as the fort area is very nice but we wouldn’t bother paying for the museum.

The museum is very nice, some information plates have dual languages (French and English). In exhibitions they have the language of the location they are talking about in addition to French and English.
There are areas that have displays of Audio, Visual and written materials which was so nice.
We loved the cultures sounds section and we got immersed into it.
The outdoor area and the connecting bridge were amazing as they have direct views of the sea.

The area around and within this building is exceptionally nice offering great views and nice places for relaxation. However, the exhibitions shall be further improved to justify the entry price. The one dedicated to Salammbô could be a role model.
