About
For over 400 years, the Citadel rings the city. Element of the defence of the port the most important between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, it is now one of the few monuments of this magnitude of the Var coast. Proud of its rich maritime past, Saint-Tropez has decided to create a modern museum in the dungeon of the town's citadel, allowing all visitors to discover the daily lives of men and women who shaped over the centuries the Saint-Tropez of today.

Great idea of placing local maritime history in a wonderfully preserved fortress. Beautiful views on the surrounding town and bay with reasonably priced tickets. Really worth visiting!

This is worth a visit, We climbed the Citadel on a hot day to come up and see the best views in St Tropez as you walk the ancient grounds you will see Pea Hens wandering around and you can get 360 degree views of St Tropez and inside the towers is a very informative and modern museum. This is a must do when coming to St Tropez.

Honestly, the last thing I expected in St Tropez was a museum. So reluctlanty I climbed up the steps on the park, got to the top only to discover a real gem.
The view, as other reviewers already stated, is excellent as you can see basically the whole city, bay and surrounding hills.
But the best part was getting into this fortress turned museum. Absolutely fantastic, it is part History of town, part nautical museum, very clean and nice, with very interesting displays.
The entrance fee was 3 euros, not even a cup of coffee in this town, and you can have a great time. Recommended espcially if you have kids.

Scenic old fortress turned into an interesting, unpretentious naval museum, with stunning 380° views.
The location is superb, but the best part is getting into the museum. With information in both French and English, the mixed media exhibits are appealing for both young and old.
Quite low cost by St Tropez standards, the 3euros entrance fee is a steal!
The exhibits are tastefully displayed and cover the true identity of Saint Tropez in the past 500 years.
Indeed, St Trop was not just a picture perfect fishing village, but it turns out it had much greater importance.
The exhibits cover commerce and fishing trips along Provence’s coast, as well as long hazardous voyages aboard large merchant sailing boats beyond Cape Horn, journeys along the coasts of Africa and India, and the age of luxurious liners. Amongst notorious Tropezian celebrities,
I discovered De Suffren, who had volunteered to help the colonists during the American Revolutionary War.
Highly recommended !

Definitely worth the entrance fee of 3 euro. Inside an interesting naval museum and outside, on the top, a stunning view of Saint-Tropez, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Mediterranean sea.

We almost skipped the citadelle; we almost did not have what is now my most memorable experience in Saint-Tropez. We did not visit the museum but walked up the hill as the sunset to take in the view over the ocean and the town. And what a view it is: it is really like something out an landscape painting. To one edge of your view are the rooftops and clock tower of Saint Tropez and to the other the calm ocean dotted with yachts and boats as the light of the setting sun glimmers on the glassy sea's surface. There are no words for the feeling that engulfed me. Pure sublimity.

This citadel is on top of Saint-Tropez hill. For 3€ per person, you can have a wonderful view of the city and the sea, visit the inside of the citadel (with ancient walls, cannons, ...) and access the naval museum. This museum is the most interesting part of the attraction: it offers a long journey through the history of navigation and includes many interactive activities (such as pulling ropes for discovering additional information about ships and sea travels, watching a movie on the ceiling while being on a sofa, listening to the history of a 1900 captain writing his lover some romantic postcards, entering the reconstructed house of an ancient fisherman, and so on).

Even though it can be a very hot walk, a visit to the Citadelle is worth the effort. It was built in the beginning of the 17th century and offers a great view of the town as well as the sea. Peacocks walk around and add to the rather tranquil atmosphere up here as opposed to the hustling and bustling of the port. Do not miss the great photo opportunities.

Fortunately we were able to visit the cidadel as it happened to be open during work in progress and we were able to admire the magnificent view and take photographs on the wonderful sunny day. At present the citadel is closed officially until the end of June 2013 due to restoration works.

Hi - How close can you get to the citadel, and more importantly, can you get a great view of the harbour/town after the citadel has closed? I was hoping to go up there around 20:00 when the sun is setting, but the museum will have closed by then.

Hello, there is a path on the Citadel feet where you can have a lovely view to St. Tropez harbour. Even if the view from the Citadel is of course worth to see.
