- Josepha M178 contributionsDelightful surprise of sumptuous villa and tropical gardensWe were very impressed by this museum. The villa is sumptuously decorated at the end of the nineteenth century. The upper floor has a diverse display ranging from a headdress worn by Empress Josephine and a black parasol to advertising posters for Nice appealing to the rich Edwardians who came for the warm winter. The captions were difficult to read. We enjoyed wandering around the gardens which included banana and orange trees. The garden also included a memorial to the victims from the truck attack in Nice in 2016 formed of photographs . We were delighted to discover the museum is fully accessible to prams once inside. The paintings that lined the stairwell were absolutely breathtaking!Musee Massena was recommended to me from the Francis Bacon Foundation in Monaco. This museum was full of artworks that related to the City of Nice and its history. I photographed much of what I saw just so I could remember each piece: historical French furniture, Nice's famous world class Carnival posters throughout the many years, paintings larger than life-size, the interior and exterior of the building was exceptional, the garden was manicured and a delightful place to enjoy. A very interesting museum in the centre of Nice which I would fully recommend for anyone to visit if they have the time during their stay in Nice. It’s great to see some of the history of the area with art and artefacts on show.
Sadly, yet understandably, much of the museum’s worded content is in French only, and my French is very limited.
Despite this my girlfriend and I both enjoyed the visit and would recommend. We spent near 40 minutes looking around.

This is a really cool Museum which pulls together the history of Nice in the context of a sumptuous and well furnished House Museum. The Costa exhibition makes it a must see although the exhibition only runs through September 17. The Costa story is unique and moving in that it finally has been presented after a 110-year delay! Thanks to Helen at the office of tourism for making sure we didn't miss it!

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Nice. The museum is in a belle epoque mansion which is very impressive in itself. We were fortunate to see two special exhibits on our visit. One was about French circuses and the other about Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Both were fascinating. We highly recommend the Musee Massena.

Museum shows how Queen Victoria transformed a relatively unremarkable fishing village into a chic destination for the upper classes. The first floor rooms give you an idea of what opulence looked like. The top floor is for temporary exhibits. The current one (on the flower trade in Nice) is fabulous. Talented local floral expertise plus an influx of wealthy nobility in the 1880’s gave Nice the thriving flower business it has today.

This is both a villa from the 1700s and a local museum in one. The ground floor has been kept quite authentically as was, minus some of the original furniture, and you can download an app to get a proper introduction to the purpose of all the rooms. Both the interior, exterior and the garden outside leading right down to Promenade de Anglais, are absolutely gorgeous, and I was mesmerized walking around there. The two other floors are turned into more of a generic museum, with very interesting and lovely exhibitions from various eras. I particularly enjoyed seeing old photographs, paintings and posters of Nice and getting a sense of what has changed and what hasn't. I believe this is absolutely worth a visit if you're in town.

I would suggest that the Musée Massena should be on a ‘must see’ Nice list. The museum is set back from the Mediterranean along the Promenade des Anglais on a beautiful property. In the museum you will be asked to leave water bottles and umbrellas behind to collect after your visit. I took a lot from the short movie on the history of Nice and the intention of the early city planners, the evidence of which can still be seen today.
The main floor is absolutely stunning and the photos online do not do it justice. The second floor museum/gallery included so many historical pieces for Nice and the surrounding area it gave so much context to the area. My only drawback was not being able to read and understand French. I would have found even an information sheet in different languages helpful to get even more from the experience. There was a QR code at the ticket counter that I thought was for an audio guide but it didn’t seem to be (that could be operator error ;)
I would budget at least 90 minutes minimum.

Interesting for those who want to discover the history of the city, even if as a Parisian, I have a lot of trouble with these museums about the city's stories.
The place is still worth it in terms of the exterior, the garden, the decorations inside. A current focus on the Nice carnival, its preparations with some examples of works and artists who paraded during the carnivals.
Three floors, mixing paintings, biographies, evolution of the city.
