The church and restored square are colorful and have such a “clean” feel. The steps ascending to the square provide great views of the sea below and by the time you reach the top, the view toward Italy is simply gorgeous. Be sure to appreciate the incredible stonework paving below your feet. The church is open at certain hours, so if you want to actually enter it, do your access research in advance.

The baroque Tower of this basilica, easily seen from almost all vistas in Menton, is postcard worthy. Overlooking both the port as well as the old town, it also affords gorgeous views from its location. Dedicated to St. Michael who is the patron saint of Menton.

The cathedral should open at 15.00. So climbing all the stairs (as somebody with knee problems) and waiting for 15 minutes in the rain we entered the cathedral at 15.03. Immediately we and others were told to leave in a very unpleasant way by the person in charge. The cathedral was closed and would open at 15.30. The sign at the door saying 15.00 did not matter. It was ‘go, go’. We decided not to wait in the rain for another 25 minutes, not feeling welcome at all. So probably it is a very nice cathedral, but we will see it in a few years when/if we come back to Menton.

A must stop for anyone visiting Me ton, especially if you enjoy visiting churches.

I stopped in to St. Michel Basilica as I was passing by on a self guided walking tour. The resin anting church bells beckoned me, so I went in. It was a Sunday morning and although I could not understand very well, the language of the service the opening hymn was a familiar tune. It was a blessing to visit; such a beautiful church!

One of the top attractions in Menton, pearl of the French Riviera, is this 17th century baroque style church with the bell tower height of 53 metres. The church is dedicated to Saint Archangel Michael Since 1947 it has been listed as a protected monument alongside with nearby cemetery. Basilica is reachable through staircase from the Plage des Sablettes.

The outside is not bad. It is especially the color that attracts the eye. For the visit of the interiors, it is necessary to wait a certain niche. Now the city is not welcoming. No parking provided for motorhomes. So all my reviews of Menton will suck

Really beautiful place, loved the paintings and ceiling detailing. There was a baptism going on so lovely music playing too.
The outside mosaic style square is lovely and views to the sea too.

Definitely a visit to make in Menton. Beautiful decoration and frescoes on the ceiling. To be combined with a visit to the two cemeteries a little further up. They are very different and offer the most beautiful views of the sea and Menton. Allow 2 to 3 hours. It's climbing!

We couldn't get in as the Basilique was closed..but we still enjoyed the perfect harmony of its exterior facade and of the calm square where it stands¨, with nice mosaic pattern on the ground , overlooking the sea...

If you do anything in Menton, visit the Basilica St. Michel. It is a baroque masterpiece and unmistakably French. It was built in the 17th century and rife with all things pertaining to Archangel Michael. Words can not describe the beauty of the building's interior. The paintings on the ceiling, the altar, the statues - all gorgeous! There are a half dozen chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, its something to be seen.
The walk up from the seaside is a daunting set of stairs but, there is another, easier route. If you go through the back of shopping district and approach the Basilica from the west, the climb is more gradual and will take you through a charming residential area. The walk was no more than ten minutes and if you wish to carry up past the church (heading east) to the top of the hill, there is an elaborate, interesting cemetary with stupendous views.
I do have one tip and that is make sure you check the hours before going. We visited on a Wednesday and the Basilica was closed for a period of the afternoon. We filled the time waiting with a visit to the cemetary but, there are no cafe's in the immediate area to spend the wait.
