- sskrollOrlando, Florida1,099 contributionsGreat HistoryGreat story behind this bridge and why it was built. It is easily seen from the street. You can also go on the bridge and pay a fee so you can go out and dance on the bridge. Yes I said dance as it is done all the time and there is a story behind that as well. Read up on the history before you go!Hello, we are happy that you had a good time at Pont Saint Bénezet. We look forward to welcoming you back to the site. - DavidLille, France1,897 contributionsGood. The attraction gets 5 stars because you get great value for your dollar! Not only is the bridge itself interesting but it comes with lots of information about it's history and an audioguide for those who want to go further. Bathroom facilties available! And all included in the price of a 17 euro ticket which I got at the papal palace and gardens complex!Hello. We are delighted that you had a great time in Avignon and at Le Pont Saint Bénezet. - Merv NealAberdare, United Kingdom287 contributionsAnother underwhelming visitAfter visiting the stunning Pont du Gard in the morning, we visited the Pont D' Avignon in the evening. Well, what a disappointment. All I can say is that the Romans built their bridges far far better that Medievil French engineers. It's worth walking up the banks of the Rhone to see the remaining arches of the bridge but it is quite underwhelming. However as you turn your back on the river and look at the Papal palace and Medievil buildings of Avignon, you are given a visual treat. I suggest you wander through the ancient city's streets , sit outside a cafe or restaurant and soak up the atmosphere.Hello, thank you for sharing your experience. Interesting to see and to learn the history of the bridge which ends in the middle of the Rhone. It was very windy and hot but worth seeing. - Dinh Trung-TinToulouse, France657 contributionsA Charming Icon with Rich History: The Bridge of AvignonThe Bridge of Avignon, or Pont Saint-Bénézet, is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting this historic city. This iconic landmark, famed for its partially-remaining arches spanning the Rhône River, offers a unique glimpse into Avignon’s medieval past. Walking along the bridge is like stepping back in time. The views from the bridge are nothing short of spectacular, providing a picturesque panorama of the river and the surrounding landscape. It’s easy to understand why the bridge has become such a beloved symbol of Avignon. The bridge’s history is as fascinating as its appearance. The guided tour or informational plaques offer engaging insights into its origins, the legends surrounding its construction, and its historical significance. The story of Saint Bénézet, the shepherd who is said to have built the bridge with divine inspiration, adds a touch of local lore to your visit. The bridge itself is beautifully preserved, and strolling across it allows you to appreciate its architectural details and historical significance up close. The ambiance is peaceful, making it a perfect spot for photos, reflection, and simply enjoying the beauty of the Rhône.Hello Dinh, we would like to remind you of your kind comments. Don't spend any money on this. The bridge is nice to look at from a distance, but has hardly anything to add while on it. In contradiction to the audio guide from Palais des Papes, this audio guide make you fall asleep .
Pay attention ; you can get a combo-ticket with Pales des Papes. But even if you bought a combo-ticket , you still have to queue at the cashier between the other guests for the audio guide

I grew up with the song, being from Canada, and was very surprised to meet some people from the US and Australia who had never hear of the song. We learned that the Canadian connection came from the Quebec-France connection, which we didn't realize. So, I was keen to sing the song and dance on the bridge, which I did. The history of the bridge is well explained in the small museum area, and the engineering history is fascinating as well. Really glad we spent time here. Very memorable.

The history of the bridge, or rather the lack of a bridge is quite interesting and they give you a free Audioguide and there is a bit of a museum with videos and information so that was really nice.
I just can't fully get over the fact that they charge money to go on a bridge that doesn't even go anywhere. I thought this should just be a free historic site.

In ancient times this beautiful bridge actually did the job, leading people from one side of the river to the other. Centuries ago parts of it were washed away, and now it looks like an unfinished masterpiece…
Well, I was told that the best pictures of the bridge are taken from the banks of the Rhône - and that there is no need to pay the €5 in admission fee.
That’s all I know. Maybe you know better?

Sure there's a French song based on this bridge, but that's all it is - a half destroyed bridge.
For €5, you get this mini phone-like MP3 player where you walk over the bridge and you input a number based on your location to know more about the bridge. You walk along the river, then look at the guardhouse and one of the lower levels.
But that's it. Way too much unnecessary and quite frankly uninteresting information about a half-destroyed bridge that doesn't even look unique from others.
Save your money and time and stick with Palais des Papes, the garden nearby, or some other museum or walk along the walls.

My wife was born in Europe and has always wanted to see the bridge in Avignon because of her childhood song of "Pont d'Avignon." We all know the tune but I had never associated it with this 1000 year old bridge. As in the song, we danced on the Pont d'Avignon. It made her very happy! And the part of the bridge that still remains is a marvel of Saint-Benezet's dreams of what God told him to build.

Visit to the bridge that we did with a Papal Island duo ticket.
Very disappointing bridge, nothing special and I find the entrance expensive for what there is to see. Ticket office staff not welcoming and not very friendly. My son wanted some Paris currency from Papal Island when he visited there was more, they told us, ask the Pont if there was any left. My son asks, happy and the girl at the ticket office tells us in a dry tone, the machine is broken, I say, maybe you sell it differently, when visiting Popes' Island, they tell us that you had some left because they had more and my son wanted this piece. And the person tells us too bad for them and too bad for your son in an I don't care tone. Toilets dirty and smelly. Clogged sink. For a tourist site a minimum would be good because there is traffic with many families. We were disappointed.

The bridge is a place to linger and imagine the history that seeps out from its stones. It's also great to linger and watch the wildlife around and on the water. Stop and listen to the water as it ripples and swirls around the bridges structure, just as it did centuries ago. The recorded information is very useful and the displays also provide useful context and historical information.

Avignon is best known for it's bridge and the famous song. So a visit is a must-do. The entrance ticket costs 5 euros (4 for seniors) but is well worth the modest price. You can walk over the famous bridge as far as it goes and realize that you are on very historic grounds. But what was most interesting and certainly new to me is the story of how it was built and later destroyed. An impressive example of Middle-age engineering and a sad end due to climate change. Makes you think. But certainly worth a visit.

Family visit to the bridge as part of a combined ticket with the Palais des Papes. The Saint-Bénezet bridge is magnificent and offers an incredible view of the ramparts of Avignon and the Rhône. The panels are quite well done. They are large, well illustrated and allow you to discover the legend and origin of the song "sur le pont d'Avignon." The film supplements this initial information by providing historical references and detailing the construction of the bridge and its evolution over time. On the other hand, the audio guide does not provide anything more (except the different versions of the song which are rather nice): the comments are long and sometimes complex (especially for children who end up dropping out!)
Once we had read the information on the signs and the film, we just wanted to wander around the bridge, take photos and enjoy the different views it offers without burdening ourselves with new redundant comments.

Deze 12e-eeuwse brug vormde ooit de enige vaste oeververbinding over de rivier tussen Lyon en de Middellandse Zee. De brug ging over de rivier de Rhône via het in het midden van de rivier gelegen eiland île de la Barthelasse.
