I knew that the Avignon papacy had occurred, but had never been informed of its significance. The monument taught me a lot about the way that it happened, what it meant for the French kingdom, and how the popes lived. In particular, it is more clear to me now that the papacy at that period was a secular institution, very... More

We did not have time to go inside.. but we were so impressed with the enormity of the structure. It was HUGE! We walked around the entire property and took time to walk to the overlook by the river!

The exterior is breathtaking, considering its gargantuan scale and varied design elements. The interior is quite spartan but the self-guided tour is worthwhile, with adequate signage to explain the many rooms.

Interesting architecture throughout this palace. An interesting exploration through the history of the Popes abandoning Rome for Avignon.

The Popes Palace is an impressive building situated in a high position overlooking Avignon and the river Rhone, with great views from the top.We spent a couple of hours exploring the palace using the excellent audio guide - highly recommended. Although the rooms are empty, there are many information panels and audio visual presentations (with seating - very useful for... More

Before Vatican was the formal residence of the Pope, Avignon was official residence in the middle age. During the visit through the immense palace's galleries information is given about the history of this building. The full price is 11 euros and they accept international student cards when acquire a price-reduced ticket (9 euros).

There isn't anything to see but rooms. It would have been nice if it had furniture of that period. Over 200 steps.
