The Palace of the Popes made for an interesting morning. The audio guides, included in the price of admission, and the technology used made it easy to understand what each room was used for, and also to understand the history of the Palace.

You have to weigh up going into this Palace if you are on a tour with limited time to see this beautiful city of Avigon.
We did take the time, and although the technology used within the palace to let you invisage how it would have looked. I am still not sure if we should have enjoyed the outside and seen more of the rest of the town. It does take a while to go through. Don't get me wrong the history of the place 'Le Palais des Papes' Home to around 9 Popes in the 14th/15th century when France broke away from Rome. It is truely one fantasic Gothic palace and again a credit to the architecture of its time.
This is the person who nagged her husband to go in as I do not like missing anything on these visits however should we have admired from the square and seen more of the town? Your choice

This is a must see in Avignon, within the walled city. The palace and surrounding area has been beautifully preserved. Take your time to visit the many rooms of the palace and watch the sunlight form patterns on the marble through stained-glass windows and lovely archways. I enjoyed seeing the huge chimney and stories of the number of cows and chickens cooked within a relatively small space to serve papal congregations. On the day I visited, it was also very quiet despite tour groups and added to the enjoyment of taking in the beauty of the building.

The palace is truly impressive. The tour through the building, however, is organized badly. First it's difficult to find your way through the rooms. Already at the beginning, right after passing the court, it's not clear whether to proceed straight or enter the rooms to the right. Later, once we made it to the first floor, it got less confusing. Still, I am not sure whether we saw all the rooms or not.
We did not manage to find the gardens. We had tickets and we asked the staff for the way but all we found was a herbarium.
The worst thing was the electronic guide. They try hard to make it impressive, include augmented reality, but it just adds to the confusion and draws your attention away from the actual place to an electronic gadget. A nice toy for kids who like to experiment with touch screens but not for adults who want to get a feeling for the place.
The best comes at the end: I left a critical review but the gadget wouldn't let me commit it. Still I got an automatic email asking why my experience was that bad. I sent my comments to that e mail address -- automatic reply: the mail address / the group doesn't exist. I tried to find a contact address on the palace's website. Result: 404 - page not found.

Fascinating insight into the Palace and life over the centuries.
Histopads were available as audioguides, and they included a treasure hunt for kids which was a brilliant way to keep them engaged (we were travelling with a 5 & 6 year old).
in addition to static displays, the ipads enabled an onscreen look at how the palace would have looked during habitation.
Despite lots of staircases it was easy to navigate with children, and parts were accessible to the handicapped.
There was an art exhibition in the big hall which was also very interesting.
It was quite hot and humid in summer, but manageable.
A very popular attraction so get there early or book ahead on line

The history of the Papal Palace is very interesting, but the palace itself is really just a shell of a building, with little or no interior decorations or furniture. So, if the history interests you then its definitely worth seeing, otherwise, not so much...

An incredible historic ensemble, enlivened now by the restaurier gardens and the Salgado pictures of „Amazonia“, definitely worth a visit in their own right.

Le Palais des Papes in Avignon was the home for 9 Popes in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is now the largest gothic palace still in existence. It is well worth a visit, especially because of the brilliant use of modern technology. Every visitor is given an electronic device that guides you through the palace, and best of all shows images of what you are seeing was like in the relevant century. This is the best thing I have seen in visits to many sites in many countries around the world.

Easy to find.
Go early to beat the crush.
Best with a guide although the electronic guide is very guide.
Limited things to see but sufficient to keep you interested.
Allow a good hour.
Not stunning like many palaces are but worth the visit.

The Palais des Papes - Palace of the Popes. in the Papal City of Avignon is largest surviving Gothic palace in Europe. The French Pope moved the papal operation to Avignon in 1309 & it remained there until 1403. The palace was heavily fortified and the architecture is interessting.
