The foundations of the forum were designed as a horseshoe shaped set of arches now some six meters below modern ground level. An intriguing and unusual location presented as crypts.

This was included in my combi-ticket. There isn't a huge amount to see but it is worth going there as the area covered it quite big with lots of little nooks and crannies. They had information at the desk in English. Do check it out.

Not the most exciting thing to do, but at least you walk through historical vaults under the city. A bit pricy for what it is...only took us 30 minutes!

Entrance through Town Hall. The underground forum is part of the UNESCO listed structures. It's Roman and it has kept one of its original purposes: a low temperature for the storage of goods. A cool walk in hot Arles.

The scale of the cryptoportiques situated under the Hotel de Ville will blow your mind. Worth a visit as you step back in time to Roman Arles

Accessed via the Hotel de Ville, these huge amazing Roman remains right under the main square and many of the buildings of Arles are well worth visiting (3.50 euros). Very dimly lit, damp and very atmospheric, no one is sure what the Cryptoporticus was built...More
