About
Exhibition from 7 October 2017 to 2 April 2018 : La Vie Simple - Simplement la Vie / Songs of Alienation Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11am to 6pm. Last admissions 45 minutes before closing. Vincent van Gogh is a pivotal figure in the art of the 20th century. His oeuvre continues to influence artists and exert an unprecedented magnetism upon the public right up to the present. It was in Arles that Van Gogh produced - within the space of just 15 months between February 1988 and May 1888 - his finest masterpieces. Inaugurated in April 2014, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles pays due homage to the work of Van Gogh while at the same time exploring his impact upon art today. This relationship with contemporary art was enshrined within the principles of the Fondation right from its conception. By presenting the painting of the Dutch master in the context of works by contemporary artists, the Fondation aims to stimulate a fruitful dialogue centred on interrogation and reflection.

- riverBrussels, Belgium48 contributionsbetter than I imaginedIt was absolutely gorgeous, I've been reading the reviews and I don't think people get that the paintings normally displayed are inspired by Vincent Van Gogh or he was inspired by them. Normally there isn't anything he made, however now there are two paintings of Van Gogh displayed. Both extremely beautiful! Expo Van Gogh et les Étoiles (until the 8th of August) is definitely worth it, especially since it's so cheap. Apart from Van Gogh there are some other beautiful impressionism works, from various (and even a few famous) artists!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024
- HealthyTravelerSanta Barbara, California125 contributionsDon’t believe the negative reviews!Excellent Excellent Excellent Museum! Don’t pay any attention to the negative reviews. There are a few really great Van Goghs here as well as many other great artists. If you are looking for a museum full of Van Goghs-go to Amsterdam. Well worth a visit if you love art!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024
- Keith DRichardson, Texas1,188 contributionsThought-provoking ExhibitionWe visited in July 2024 and saw an exhibition on artists as they viewed the night sky through the centuries. Starry Night was the focal point of the exhibit and there were many great pieces on display. Only two by Van Gogh but that did not distract. Lovely views of the city if you take the elevator or stairs to the topmost level.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2024
- Sophie-Reviews8923London, United Kingdom80 contributionsBeautiful galleryBeautifully set up gallery space with enough room to give space to each piece of art themed around stars and night. The centrepiece was the 1888 Starry Night - probably not the one you're thinking of when you think of Starry Night, so do be aware! - but it was stunning and amazing to see it so close to where it was painted. Bring a Euro for the lockers, but they can also give you tokens if you don't have one. Definitely worth a visit for any art fans while you're in Arles!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024

This is a tourist trap! A museum that uses van Gogh’s name but only has 1 (one!) small painting from Vincent is a disgrace. Most rooms are used to display a large number of black and white photographs from Italy 100 years ago. A waste of €9,00 entrance fee!

We were aware this museum, in spite of its name, has only one Van Gogh piece on exhibit, but we were told we would see contemporary works inspired by Van Gogh. Uh, not so much… Actually I’m not sure what inspired these works. We were certainly uninspired by any of them. The only worthwhile viewing we experienced was from the terrace overlooking the city. Save your money, and pass on the Van Gogh Foundation. Not covered by the Arles pass, and definitely not worth the price of admission.

Worst museum I've ever visited.
As a previous reviewer was told, it was explained that there was only one painting by Van Gogh in the museum. Other contemporary works were supposed to have been influenced by him. What nonsense. 'Souffler de son souffle' could more accurately be renamed 'Peter de son pet'. Terrible.

I don’t think you should go here thinking you’ll see a lot of Van Gogh. They typically only have one original painting on loan and the rest of the exhibit is other artists. When we visited it was very modern. The gift shop does have a few interesting items if you are a die hard Van Gogh fan.

I haven't been yet but won't be disappointed by the museum. I am thete in my mind right n o w watching Dafoe as Vincent in a vivid portrait of him on film. If I want a 100 of his paintings on a wall, I'll go back to the Dam. I'll start there, then walk out into the countryside to hopefully see what Vincent saw, then go back into town to that street he painted and have some wine.

A nice gallery, but as others have said, don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll see Van Gogh’s paintings there! There was only one painting of his. The others were different artists and the main exhibition was a modern artist. 2 floors of gallery space with lift. Gift shop mainly for books. No cafe.

Should have bought the catalogue. This expo ( shown in London’s Whitechapel gallery earlier this year ). Includes the New York scene Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, and Helen Frankenthaler. And then a host of others Idid not know. Like Janet Sobel who started doing drip paintings before the over rated Jackson Pollock in 1947, but was ignored by the critic Clem Greenberg who lionized JP. Work by galleriest Betty Parsons. Missed the second floor as we ran out of time. Recommend Mary Gabriel’s Ninth Street Women for the NY scene.

Well, the first thing to know about the Fondation Van Gogh is that it has two paintings by him. Two. Of the rest, a few are artists who influenced VG, the rest just vaguely to do with stars, the excuse being that VG's Starry Night is one of the two they have. Sone of the others are genuinely interesting, most are pretentious w*nk. One is a hinged block of marble with a space inside it - we learn that the artist opened in at night in a forest, and it now contains that night. I wish I I was making this up.
Frankly to name this exhibition after VG is false advertising.
