One would think this is a standard cathedral, but not so. The cloisters, for achitectural buffs, and even those not so, are beautiful. NOTE, you have to ask a guide to take you, free, just donate some euros to the church. Worth the 45 m talk and information. Afterwards, just outside, a lovely, clean cafe with charming young women serving snacks, cakes and lovely things, L archeveche, Rue Gaston de Sarporta.

Cathedrale St. Sauveur, also known as Aix Cathedral, is a national Monument of France. It has a multiplicity of design styles including Romanesque, Gothic and Neo Gothic elements. The cathedral is supposedly built on the site of the Roman forum in Aix.

The cathedral boasts that it is a real assorted. Once upon a time there was a sanctuary of Apollo on the site of the cathedral - apparently the local people revered this Hellenic god very much, since his temples are found everywhere, then with the advent of Christianity a chapel was built here, which gradually grew into a large cathedral. Part of the cathedral is Romanesque, and part is Late Gothic. The cathedral also houses the oldest font in France (it has been preserved since the 5th century) and wonderful fragments of frescoes and mosaics. There is also an absolutely wonderful collection of tapestries in the cathedral, which we also considered for a long time. We were very lucky - an organist rehearsed in the cathedral and we listened to organ music for a long time... But the organist stopped playing and we went on.

As a couple of the previous reviews have pointed out, the Cathedrale St. Sauveur isn't much to look at from the outside, but the inside is a completely different story.

Interestingly, we entered from a side door at the right, not the main church entrance (maybe that's only used for holy occasions). But immediately your in the baptismal area, complete with an emersion fount from the 6th century!! There's a modern one there too, showing pictures of recent cerimonies.

The interior architecture of the church is simple, high gothic with vaulted ceilings. But the details of the carvings are incredible and the real highlight is the amazing artwork placed throughout the nave. Make sure to visit the sacred tomb on the right hand side.

Definitely a great place to stop, visit, relax and reflect.

Cathedrale St. Sauveur dates back to at least the 12th century. However it has been re-built several times since then. We walked in while wandering the nearby streets. It is a beautiful building and this is probably a reflection of its various architectural styles which include gothic and romanesque. It is worth a longer visit if you have the time.

Well, take the time to visit this cathedral. From my perspective, is no 1 things to see in town.
It's a bit crowded so time to see it all will vary on the hour you get there. But you can spend 1 hour to admire and take photos.

Visited this calm, serene cathedral on a very warm March afternoon. The funeral of Paul Cezanne was held here in 1906. Styles of architecture include Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque. Very spiritual and worth a visit - and so convenient for all the wonderful shops selling all manner of traditional wares of Provence.

This is a beautiful cathedral with lots of varied artwork. I loved that you were able to see how it changed over time with elements from the 6th century visible, as well as Gothic elements. Lovely to absorb the history and peace.

The Cathedrale de St.-Sauveur is located so close to the street that it's difficult to get a photograph of it without lopping off the steeple. The Gothic design is spectacular, but the beautifully carved walnut doors are even better. Inside, are early Romanesque elements including a series of Roman columns incorporated into the Baptistry. If you are lucky, you can see the cloister garden as well.

One of the things not to miss is the Triptych of the Burning Bush by Nicolas Froment, recently restored to its original brilliance. The church is quiet even though there are lots of tourists who visit. It's the kind of place where even the tour guides talk in hushed tones. I liked the aura of this church. Don't miss the splendid stained glass windows...brilliant on a sunny day. If you have time, sit for a while and contemplate. These stones were set in place a very long time ago.
