About
Unique in its kind, Pierre et Lumière is an underground route where you can admire impressive sculptures representing the monuments and heritage of the Loire Valley. Hundreds of tons of stone were cut, cut and chiselled to the smallest detail. Nearly 3 years of work have been required to realize the sumptuous sculptures of castles, towns, villages and churches of our region, often carried out in low relief from the rock. A subtle luminous staging reveals the beauty of volumes and details. Lighting evolves, turns, changes colour to sublime every facet of the work. At the end of the visit, an unforgettable experience for children! A tuffeau stone, tools and wise advice. Here they are ready to create a memory that will remain etched in the stone and in their hearts.

Very beautiful sculptures in the tuft, detailed and realistic, well highlighted by the projectors. Interesting technical comments. The booklet for children (5 years and over) is very educational. The reward for the answers to the puzzles is nice! Well done shop, impeccable toilet, outdoor place to picnic.

Bonjour !

We did this visit in combination with the visit to the mushroom museum. A very good surprise to see all these magnificent sculptures representing the surrounding buildings. This made us want to return to the region and linger in the municipalities represented. Bravo to the creators of the site.

Well worth a visit for all interested in local Historic Churches and Chateaux, or just those impressed with skillful sculpture & architectural detail. The sculptor has recreated scale models of many historic buildings in the region. I believe they were all carved on-site and many are cut directly into the Tufa Stone in the caves. There is also the explanation in English (sadly quite rare in the area) of the exhibits, including challenges for the sculptor and technical details. A very impressive array of carvings - I was particularly impressed by the riverscape of Saumur town with it's reflections in the water, and the Tours Cathedral. A fascinating and unusual place to visit, especially to escape the sun or rain, but take a sweater if you want to linger, as it is a damp and cool 12-13 degrees inside.

We decided to visit the caves with the carvings after reading the flier at our campsite. The promise of underground experience of carvings and lights seemed to be a god afternoon spent.

A family of 4 (over 6 years old have to pay) cost €32 and we walked around the cave in 21 minute which included stopping to take pictures.

The carvings were OK but nothing overly amazing. Admittedly the artist had had no training and completed all the carving within 3 years.

I am not saying I could do any better but when two families have spent €64 it was over priced. If the children were free then it would be value for money.

The children did enjoy the carving at the end but the promise of lights and carvings to be met with the carvings lit by a few spot lights was very underwhelming.

These intricate carvings are lovely but were it not part of a three part ticket purchased with the mushroom caves, we would not have visited. Our visit took no more than 20 minutes with a general “hmmm” reaction.

If you have never visited this area of France before then I would recommend a visit here first.
There is a map that shows you where the sculptures get there inspiration from. These are the places that are all well worth a visit on your travels in the area. Each sculpture also has a very brief history with it as well, it gives you a visual insight on what to expect when you get there. The work involved is excellent and so accurate in every detail.

Biggest disappointment. Sold as a village and saw churches. Sold as a light show and saw a few spotlights. Not knocking the skill involved in creating the pieces, but at the price of 32euros for a family of 4, I would hope for so much more. Only took 15 minutes as one piece looked the same as the next. A few impressive pieces for sure but they might as well have taken the money straight out of my wallet. Nothing for children during the visit to get excited about but they were charged 7euros each- some rock scraping at the end to try. What was even worse was reviewing previous comments, children were free in June 2018... how does that work???

Went here during a heatwave as we were looking for something to do out of the heat. It was a lovely surprise. The sculptures are incredibly detailed and are of various sizes, they are of different towns or buildings in the region. The kids get to do some sculpture of their own at the end which is included in the price. It is cool in the cave so best to bring a jacket to wear while visiting. It is next door to the mushroom museum and you can get tickets to both at the same time but don't have to visit on the same day.

Very interesting but relatively short visit. Going with an octogenarian opens ones eyes to potential hazards. It has good access for disabled visitors so long as they are strong or have a strong helper! The sculptures are beautiful in detail and setting with interesting boards in French and English giving information about the sculptures themselves, the subject and other interesting information. Other languages also available in guide book form. Visit can also be combined with the nearby mushroom caves, they offer a reduced price duo ticket. if I have any criticism, it seemed a little expensive considering that the visit only takes only just about an hour but it was worthwhile just the same.
