If you catch this unique place when it's open, you can climb up into the works of the clock! There's a good audio tour that walks you through the history and the workings of this amazing piece of medieval technology. The kid's audio tour was a hit with our 9 year old and the adult version was great as well. Definitely worth a visit!

The Great Clock of Rouen (Gros-Horloge) was created in England in the 14th century. , and later they were transported to Rouen and installed in a 12th-century bell tower. But during the riots in Rouen, the tower was badly damaged, it was dismantled, and an arch was built for the clock, resting on 2 sides of the street. Before the “moving” to the arch, the clock had no decorations, only a single hour hand. This clock has become one of the most famous landmarks of the city. Their mechanism, created in 1389, is one of the oldest in France. The dial represents the sun with rays against the background of a blue star and has only one hand - an hour hand, at the end of which there is a golden ram. This animal is also depicted on the coat of arms of Rouen, since previously the main income of the city came from the wool trade. In addition to keeping time, the clock also performs astrological functions. The phases of the moon can be seen on the silver ball, which is located above the dial itself. And at the bottom of the dial you can observe the change of days of the week displayed on the display. This information was very important for medieval sailors and peasants. This entire ancient, huge mechanism has never broken down, and no errors have accumulated in it. It really works like a clock!

The two must-see things in Rouen are the cathedral and this clock, which is a stone’s throw from the cathedral. It’s a clock on an arch over the street in the center of Rouen. It is notable for the ornate decoration and that this one-handed clock continues to mark the time accurately.

The astronomic clock lays on a Renaissance arch which has spanned the street since 1527. It lies roughly between the Place du Vieux Marché and the cathedral. The Gros-Horloge itself dates back to the 16th century. Its location makes it very useful as a landmark for walking around in Rouen. It is still working and beautifully decorative. Be sure to stand under the arch and admire the intricate carvings.

Situated in the street of the same name this 14th century astrological clock is housed in a renaissance archway crossing the street. It is a very ornate and beautiful clock that has been admired for centuries and was painted by, among many others, J.M.W Turner in 1832.
Certainly on the “must see” list if you are visiting Rouen.

Charming clock placed on the two sides of the arched building that joins the two sides of the homonymous street. The gold decorations give visible shine even from a distance. In the clock there is the weekly calendar and the phases of the moon, the Easter lamb of the coat of arms in the center of the arch symbolizes the wool trade-industry. When you cross the arch look up you will see the bas-reliefs placed under the arch.

The well-known city clock of Rouen stands in the lively commercial street of the city. It dates back to 1529 in its present appearance. Not only the clock itself is worth seeing, but also the Renaissance pavilion underneath with the beautiful vault and the elevated fountain with figures from Greek mythology. Next to the cathedral, the clock is definitely a must when visiting Rouen.

Great visit during which we learned a lot.
The tour lasts 45 minutes and passes very quickly.
It is perfectly suitable for children with a "special child" audio guide.
The view is superb!
We are delighted to have visited it.

July 2022
As of 9 July 2022, the clock movement itself is not functional in any way. There is an electrically operated solenoid (controlled by ?) that strikes one of the two bells in the tower on the 1/4 hour. That's it. Still, the history you get on the audio tour while climbing up is interesting, and there are some great views of Ruen.

We loved this clock. Found it after wandering for a while through the Old Town in Rouen. Thought it was great, and then realised there was quite a crowd of other people looking at it, too. Turned out it was one of the main things to see in Rouen and we should have been on the look out for it from the start. Nice to find things like this by chance.
It's a clock, an old one, clearly restored to gold and blue shiny splendour. We needed to look up as we approached, then pass underneath to see the clock face on the other side. After a while, we noticed that it was worth studying the details from directly underneath, too.
Worth the visit.

May I ask if it is strenuous? My husband has had his knees repllaced. thank you. lynn

It's an easy walk - it's fairly level. I have one knee replaced and the other needs to be done. I always use a cane when touring (otherwise at home I don't) to give you some idea of how mobile I am.
