Probably the best modern church I've seen
The whole area around the church- next to the Joan of Arc memorial cross- is well designed, elegant and functional. Even the roof drains into a waterfall bird bath. Inside is a lovely open plan church with fantastic relocated stained glass windows. Really something, inspiring space.

    Weird architecture marks historic site
This church is located on the spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, which is marked with a statue outside the church. The church has a futuristic, modern design and is almost unrecognizable as a church, especially with vendors lined up in the sanctuary. In a country with one Gothic church after another (there are several within a one mile radius in Rouen alone), I can appreciate some design that innovation. But the old city in Rouen commemorating a well-known medieval event just doesn’t seem like the right place for it. The monument itself to Joan of Arc, including a large cross to commemorate the cross she asked to view while the execution occurred, is moving, and the site itself is worth visiting, if not the church itself.

    Tribute to Joan of Arc
The memorial to Joan of Arc in Rouen is a strikingly designed church with a soaring angled roof, which is like a ship. Inside is totally modern in decor with beautiful stained glass windows some of which were from an old church. Outside is a small garden area where stands a spire monument. It is the location where Joan was burned at the stake. A sign in the garden states this. Definitely a must see.

Striking juxtaposition of new with old buildings
When you first pass the Joan of Arc cross and see the ultra-modern church in her memory, your first impression is that the church is completely out of place with the context of the Place du Vieux-Marche. But once you enter and scope the interior, devoid of columns and extraneous support, you feel the spirit and reverence of the new, ca 1979, church. She would approve, I think. This is the place to reflect on her sacrifice to country.

The area around the church is quite lovely with a little garden and plaque plus very tall cross to mark the area where Sainte Joan was burned at the stake. The architecture of the church is quite unusual and the exterior is quite dark and somber. One is surprised when entering to see the soaring ceilings that are enhanced by the beautiful stained glass windows. Some lovely sculptures scattered around. Worth a few minutes stop for sure. Quite different than one might expect of a church built in the name of Sainte Joan - much more modern.

While wandering around the city centre we had a look in the modern Joan of Arc church in the centre of the Vieux Marche and I can understand why this ultra modern structure divides opinion.

With its wide open central space and curving architecture, my wife said it reminded her of when we went into the chamber of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and I agree. Quite simply, this place looks and feels like a large, modern auditorium as opposed to a church, but when you think of it, an auditorium is pretty much what churches should be about, so I applaud the innovative design.

From a design perspective I think this is a beautiful building and the large area of stained glass windows on one wall is a stunning sight, but I reckon that as the structure completely dominates the centre of the old square it looks entirely out of place.

The outside of the church really doesn't appeal to me, it looked too big and out of place where it is. I did like the little garden outside the entrance marking the spot where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. It was a quiet place to reflect on what happened there centuries ago. The inside of the church was most appealing, high ceiling, light and airy. The way the stained glass windows are fitted is very attractive.

Sadly not a patch on the older churches , it has a clever medieval market roof design that got lost somewhere. One has to be grateful they placed the old church windows in it to divert your eyes from the ugliness. If have a short time table you can miss this

We were disappointed to find the church closed on our first visit, but excited to find it open on the following morning. While the exterior of this small church is modern and not particularly impressive when compared to the centuries-old cathedral down the street, the real beauty of this holy place lies inside, in the soaring wood ceilings and floor-to-ceiling stained glass that fill the space with gorgeous light. Don't pass this up!

Early evening and passed through the market and wondered where the smell of fish ends and the church begins. Really tough to envisage such a dark, dull building represents the faith and optimism of St. Joan. Perhaps if we could have seen inside things would have been brighter and optimistic as the site deserves. Depressing. Old ruins outside and the lively buildings and restaurants around the square made quite a contrast.

The church is located in the area where Saint Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. There is a garden and monument just outside of the church. The shape of the church is quite interesting and really different. We had a quick look inside and it is very modern looking. It does have a really nice stained glass behind the altar. Worth the stop if you are in the area looking at the other historical buildings.
