Fantastic and huge castle very close to the center of Caen. Well restored and maintained example of a castle that dates back in part to 1220. The nice thing about the castle is that you don't have to pay to walk around the grounds. You only pay if you want to go into one of the museums within the walls.

The first surprise was that the entry to the castle is actually free of charge! The site is in a beautiful elevated section of the city, and gives beautiful views of the city. All historic points have information plaques, and yet they are in French only it's easy to get the salient points from them. There's also QR code points... More

When we visited Caen, we wanted to go here as the main part of our visit. At first, I didn't think it would be very good. But that quickly changed when I got inside the castle itself. Modern and educational - just how I like it.

The French have a great way of combining history with modern day but still preserving the grandeur of a place. In England this would now be a pile of bricks but here its is slowly being rebuilt and cared for by craftsmen. Well worth a visit.

We visited here to see some local history and heard it was worth a trip. As a free activity it seemed good and our children enjoyed exploring the grounds.

The castle is impressive in its size and scope and the walls make a strong statement. You can walk along stretches of the outer walls and get a great view both internally and externally (although Cean itself lacks many buildings of interest due to damage during the 2nd world war). There are two extant buildings to see; the small church... More

Takes pride of place in Caen. Parking stations underground are inexpensive and easy to find. Take your time walking around and exploring, it's a huge old castle. Views over Caen from the many vantage points are incredible. And the best of all, you can do it all for free. Take your camera. When you're done, walk out and into town... More
