You will miss it if you are not aware of it. This monument is right next to the cathedral. It's a monument to those deported to concentration camps during WWII.

The Monument des Deportes is on the outer wall of Bayeux City Hall and lists all those from the area who were deported to the Nazi Concentration Camps. Worth stopping by to pay your respects.

This sculpture is in the main street of Bayeux but set back slightly. It is a wonderful piece and conveys the horror and anguish of the deportations during WW 11. This element of the war remains pertinent and the memorial is quite beautifully achieved.

The monument to deportees is, of course, very sad, but an important reminder of the suffering endured under the Nazi occupation.

We were surprised to find such an important monument in this small, charming town. We had not found it in any guide books but is worth finding - all walking in this community is worth it!

Just behind and near the cathedral is a monument to those deported because of their faith or ideas. Many never returned, so this worth a study. 14,700 civilians died under NAZI rule so they should be remembered. It is very unsettling to look and realise...More
