In Albi the dominant architectural feature is the fortress-like Cathedral of Ste-Cécile. Perhaps the largest brick-built cathedral in the world, it was begun in 1282 and completed in 1480. It is not a conventionally beautiful building; it's all about size and boldness of conception. The...More

We were not very positively impressed by the enormous cathedral. There were hordes of people around, mostly tourists, and there were areas, that we avoided, which you had to pay extra to view. All striking in some ways, but definitely not beautiful.

The largest and probably, most decorated brick built cathedral in the world. A must see even if your tastes do not run to the over elaborate. We had a guided tour which is recommended otherwise you may miss all the symbolism.

This cathedral has all the usual attractions of a cathedral, but it has the added attraction of being made of brick. That changes not just the look but the feel of the building, especially from the exterior. Inside, the choir is worth a few euros...More

This Cathedral is one that will always stand out in my mind as something very impressive! My wife and I stopped in Albi as we were doing a bit of a Cathar tour, and this Cathedral was one we were told not to miss -...More

This is the second time we have visited Albi and the cathedral. Just as good the second time around. Albi itself is a lovely place to wander - cobbled streets and pleasant walks by the river. The cathedral is truly amazing. Apparently the largest brick...More

I visited this cathedral in a group with a guide and audio whilst on a tour of the South of France. It took about an hour, we later had a tour of the town. The building is magnificent, so much to take in. Restoration is...More

I had seen a photo of Albi's cathedral, but nothing prepares you for the immense size of this brick colossus. And when you have recovered from seeing the outside, the inside is quite breathtaking; every squire inch of the interior is painted. From the floor...More

I recommend the audioguide. There is a beautiful, elaborately carved rood screen and beautifully preserved frescoes: of the Last Judgement near the huge organ and lovely frescoes on the vast vaulted ceiling.

It is a huge Cathedral, beautiful and impressive both from the outside and the inside. We visited on Sunday during service and it was charming.

Dear Jan I did a calculation back of envelope last year and I arrived at 35-40 millions of bricks. It is a good idea for a chat at the end of a good meal. Cheers Jean-Jacques from Rabastens (Tarn)
