Perhaps it's the off season or Covid times, but this chateau was underwhelming. We walked from the centre of town (3.7km) to arrive with only the gardens being open. It would have been ok except they were overgrown, boxwood untrimmed and very tired looking. Even the vineyard looked tired.
The 7 euros each could have been spent elsewhere easily.

My wife and I toured Chateau de Flaugergues during an excursion on a Viking ocean cruise. The chateau looks impressive from the outside. However, the most interesting fact about the chateau is that it is only one room deep. It was apparently built to look majestic but the owner didn’t want to go to the expense to add more rooms.

After a lovely lunch at the Folia restaurant, we went on a guided visit to the Chateau to learn more about the history of France and the meaning of the term ¨la folie¨, the phrase used in our pamphlet, ¨Visitez la folie!¨ Our guide made the visit interesting by sharing information about the history of the Colbert family and their activities at the Chateau in the past. We saw the unique staircase and the Chateau dining room. We learned of the indoor games played by family and visitors in past centuries. As an art journalist I was able to enjoy the Chateau´s 18th century architecture, its engravings by famous artists and the beautiful Flemish tapestries.on the walls.
After our visit to the Chateau, we strolled through the gardens containing plants and trees from around the world. Our guide was able to show us a plant or tree that originated in each of the countries represented by the people in our group. The tour was followed by a wine tasting, ¨degustacion, ¨ of the excellent wines produced by the Chateau.
I highly recommend that you take the time, when you are visiting Montpellier, to visit Chateau de Flaugergues. My friend and I had a wonderful afternoon at the Chateau. I am looking forward to my next visit.
I will publish this review in my Word Press art and photography website

Took a leisurely walk from the town centre to visit the chateau. Paid 7 Euros for an unguided walk around the gardens followed by a wine tasting at the end.
Promotional material at the entrance shows photographs of lush hedgerow and green grass though the reality is somewhat different. Where once there was a carpet of green all that remains is dry scorched earth and the other plants haven't seen much water for a long time.
Wine tasting included a choice of any three of six wines on the list of white, rose and red grown at the chateau. Not sure the vineyards had seen much water either as the wine was pretty mediocre. Didn't have any food here so can't comment on that.

We are sorry you did not enjoy your experience with us. We are very attached to customer feedbacks in a constant effort to improve the quality of our tours. We thank you for your comment. Our gardens, like the South of France, have suffered a major drought this year. Wanting to be a Mediterranean garden that changes with the passage of season, so it suffered this dry weather. It still remains a "Remarkable Garden", label obtained in 2004 classified as "Historical Monument" in 1986. The variety of its vegetation is extraordinary and it got many collections of citrus, bamboo and palm trees.
Ten generation of winemakers, Colbert family has followed the tradition of the family since 1696. Some of our wines from elsewhere were gold and silver medallists. We sell bottles in France and around the world.

A truly beautiful place- the castle is fab with some great history behind it, the owners are happy to come over and have a chat with you and are charming. The restaurant is modern and yet inkeeping with the decadence of the castle...theres a resaaurant there too in a really nice sun spot to sit in after a tour where you can also grab a glass of their own wine ad have some nice food-not too expensive at all. Wine tasting definitely not to be missed - im a beginner and found it pretty easy and interesting- plus they dont make you spit out the wine everytime;-)

Château de Flaugergues is really worth of visiting, I recommend it to everybody who's travelling to Montpellier! The castle and the gardens are really beautiful, and the guided tour is interesting as the castle has a lot of history. The people working there are extremely friendly!! You don't have to speak french to be able to participate to the visit. The castle is also famous for its wines, which visiters are able to taste. If you are interested in tasting really good wines of the region, you should definitely go to Château de Flaugergues! The location of the site is also good, close to the city center of Montpellier.

If this was just a rating of the wine tasting and the staff, it would be 5/5 for sure. Both were wonderful! The gardens however were quite a let down. Just greenery really. The bamboo was cool but the rest didn't catch our eye.

This chateau is steeped in history, and still owned and run by the Colbert family. There is a wide range of things to do, wine tasting, restaurant (but you need to book as it is very popular) gardens and chateau

We had a lovely tour today. There were 3 of us on the tour which allowed for a lot of questions and our fantastic guide was extremely knowledgeable about the wines in the region. The wine itself was very good and a nice range to sample. Definitely worth it!

A lovely way to pass a very enjoyable day. The Chateau is built in Italianate style by an Italian family and offers house tours inexpensively. The gardens are a delight and you are free to wander. Follow that with an excellent and imaginative lunch in the courtyard, and then go for a wine-tasting. The grapes are grown on the family estate, and the rose wines are especially pleasing. The shop offers a wide selection at very reasonable prices. Gorgeous day.

Bonjour,
Bien cordialement,
L'équipe du Château de Flaugergues

Hello, I am staying near Place de la Comedie and would like to know how I would get to and from the chateau from this location.
Also, is it possible to take a tour in the next few days? What would be appropriate dress?
Thank you for you response.

Hi SibylS,
It would be a pleasure to welcome you to Flaugergues.
You can come at any time for a free visit of the gardens and wine tasting during our opening hours : 9:30am- 6:00pm.
We are doing guided tours of the Chateau Wednesday 20th, Saturday 23rd May.
These tours will be in French.
If you would like to book a tour please give us at call on: 04 99 526 637
In terms of dress. Normal dress is fine, there are a few steps at Flaugergues so maybe wear sensible footwear and if it's nice weather don't forget your suncream!
Our address is: 1744, avenue Albert Einstein, 34000 Montpellier.
We are accessible by tram. Take the line 1 to Place de France (direction Odysseum).
From there it's a 10 minute walk.
Pass between the Grammont cinema and lycée Georges Freche, go under the highway bridge, stay on the right side of the roundabout and follow the road until you get to traffic lights at which point turn right to go up the hill of av. Albert Einstein and we are on the right. (there are signs).
Hope to see you soon. Many thanks.
