Cathedrale Saint-Louis des Invalides is located in a building complex with a number of historically and culturally interesting and significant sights. The Army Museum is there as well as the famous Tomb of Napoleon and other important figures. It is definitely worth visiting.

This Cathedral forms a part of the complex of Invalides. The Army Museum is certainly a must, included in the musuem pass, highly recommend.
In the Cathedral beneath the gilded dome is Napoleon's huge tomb, carved of red marble. Down the stairs the room surrounding it has many statues and frescos of him.

The Cathedrale was built from 1679 to 1708 for use by the soldiers and non-royals. It is separated from the royal Eglise du Dome by a glass altar wall. Battle flags hang from the ceiling. It is now part of the Army Museum at the Hotel des Invalides, and still serves as the Cathedrale for the French military. Very pretty interior.

The Dôme des Invalides, is a large church with the tombs of some of France's war heroes, most notably Napoleon Bonaparte and his brothers. There is also a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans on the same grounds as it is all under the area known as Les Invalides. I was here in 1972 but it has really changed and expanded into an amazing place especially with the Army Museum on the same grounds. If you just visit the church you’ll want to plan an hour but to visit everything on these grounds it is a 3 hour minimum. Highly recommend!

A wonderful building, which holds Napoleon’s tomb. Expect long lines for a sight that it is not the end of the world if you miss it however.

Louis XIV initiated the construction of the complex in 1670, as a home and hospital for aged and unwell veterans and it has become the most notable museum of French military history. My husband and I had visited the Army Museum during our very first trip to Paris and he had spent much more time there than we originally planned. I was more anxious to see the Napoleon tomb, to tell you the truth.

This time I did not feel a need to revisit it, but, as always, admired the iconic image of the Hôtel des Invalides from the green esplanade on a bright sunny day in May.

Part of the complex of buildings making up the Hôtel national des Invalides. Museums and monuments all relating to France at War including the Musée de l'Armée (Army Museum)
The Church itself sits behind the dome which holds Napoleon's (and Josophines's)Tomb.
Understated it is not. His Coffin is enormous of carved stone. If you go down stairs the room surrounding it is full of statues and frescos of the Emperor in various heroic poses.

The Cathedrale Saint-Louis des Invalides is part of a large complex that contains the Dôme des Invalides, which houses the tomb of Napoleon. Your museum pass, should you acquire one, will allow you to gain access to the dome and tomb. It is very impressive and worth a visit.

When you are walking the busy streets of Paris, chances are you are bound to get tired of seeing people everywhere and if you are walking it all the time your feet may be screaming agony too. If you are in or near Invalides I cannot recommend this cathedral enough. Apart from special masses this place appeared to be mostly empty with very few people. Services may be going on but a part of the cathedral is always open to the public. Entry is free. Just the sheer size of the place will stun you into silence. The mammoth testament to medieval architecture may be felt in all its glory here. But more importantly this is place where you get to hear soft organs and no other sounds of the hustle and bustle of the city outside. The giant windows fill the space with natural light and yet its subdued enough for you to drift away into semi consciousness as you enjoy the solitude. There is really nothing much to see or do inside so unless you are looking to rest in peace, not in the morbid sense, you may give this a miss.
