Putting on exceptional concerts is only one aspect of the Philharmonie de Paris. With its rehearsal rooms, educational centre, exhibition space, restaurants and convivial setting within the Parc de la Villette, it has been designed as a true 'living space'.

… but how did they manage to get everything else about this grotesque building so wrong? One reason, presumably, is that the exterior screams 'grand projet' - attention-grabbing, but only in a bad way, and already showing signs of wear. The interior is just horrible. The ticket sales are not user-friendly. The entrance 'foyer' makes you think you must be... More

We were very lucky to spend an unforgettable evening here to experience Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott in concert. The auditorium is breathtaking and the acoustics sublime. Beautiful once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Phil de Paris!

We heard the NHK Tokyo Symphony Orchestra playing Sibelius and Shostakovich in the main Pierre Boulez hall. The acoustics are excellent and the concert was truly memorable. The hall has only been opened since 2015 and is well appointed except perhaps as to catering in the interval. The concert started at 20:30 and finished at 22:50 after encores so later... More

Very modern concert hall, audacious forms, very nice rooms, provides an outstanding setting for concerts, music and artistic events.

Both day and night, this building is amazing. The exterior tiles of seemingly flying birds, the view from the roof top where you may walk around and get a view of Paris in 360, the acoustics of the interior concert hall, all were fantastic. We were so very fortunate to secure tickets and to hear The Filarmonica della Scalia conducted... More

For anyone interested in musical instruments, the collection here is one of the best in the world. The special exhibits are what make it shine -- the current exhibit on Beethoven was absolutely fascinating. There was a bit about his life but the theme was the "myth" of the man and his music. That myth the exhibit argues haunts artists... More

I was particularly interested to visit this newish concert hall by Jean Nouvel who designed the wonderful concert hall in Lucerne. When I first saw it coming off the Peripherique, I couldn't believe my eyes. I found it incredibly ugly. A few nights later, I attended a concert there and my opinion of the exterior didn't change, although that evening... More

The last time I visited the Philarmonie de Paris, which is just up the road from us, it had only just opened, the concert was cancelled and we were ineptly sent packing by embarrassed junior staff. Not an auspicious start to the relationship. Now I've been again...this time to experience the current craze for feature films (the superlative, timeless Amadeus... More

We have subscription tickets so this is the 5th time since September that we have gone. The acoustics, the architecture and the programming is fantastic. Worthwhile visiting just to admire. However every service whether it be the toilets, the bar, the administration - is lacking professionalism and organization.

Staying in La Villette

Neighbourhood Profile
La Villette
This futuristic landscape has come to define the northeast of Paris. The Saint-Denis canal is framed with luscious lawns and metallic buildings over a wide-open space. Home to Europe's largest science museum, this area rewards daytime and nighttime explorations; there are three concert spaces, plus cinemas and bars, and even open-air cinema in the summer. The surrounding homes are a sharp contrast to the futuristic space. Though on the outskirts of Paris, La Villette is worth the short Metro ride from the centre.
