stumbled on this church as we walked by from the Centre Pompidou. it si definitely not in as good a shape as some of the more popular cathedrals but it is gorgeous and has an air of reverence once inside. it is still actively used and so people speak in hushed tones as they tour the space. We happened to... More

Quiet and peaceful, the church is beautiful and undergoing some renovations. If you're in the area, worth a stop for the art and architecture.

We found this church literally across the plaza from the Pompideau Center Inside it was not crowded. It is an active church so you do need to be mindful that there are services that go on. Smaller than the cavernous Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur, it seems a more intimate space but still quite arresting. We thoroughly enjoyed it so... More

I stumbled upon this church as it is in a side street very near the Pompidou Centre. OK, it is secondary attraction in Paris, but well worth a visit if you're passing. This summer (2016) is doing free classical music concerts on certain evenings.

This beautiful church has a dusty and forgotten air, and certainly lacks the money that keeps its near neighbour Notre Dame going, but it is obviously well used and well-loved by its own community. Right by the Pompidou Centre and the local shops, with beggars in the doorway, and a community meeting going on inside when we visited. The organ... More

I had read about the historic Eglise St. Merri, of Gothic architecture and with one of the oldest church bells in Paris (1331). Built in 1520 - 1612 with wonderful church acoustics, St.-Merri possesses a beautifully sounding organ that had been rebuilt by noted Francois Henri Cliquot in 1781 and was played by Camille Saint-Saens when he was organist there... Sorry for the late post. I visited July 2014. It's a very old gothic church which is under renovations. It looks like many of the old churches in Paris. The organ is large and magnificent. My highlight of my visit was sewing a small patch of material to the Community Quilt, which will be offered to a Korean church.

I had the honour of performing a concert in this beautiful church in Paris. They have an active concert programme with free (donations only) events on a Wednesday and a Saturday. It has a wonderful acoustic and I would recommend it to any performer. From a tourist point of view, it is a lovely space, a stone's throw from the... More

This small gothic church is in the La Marais distrcit. From the windows of the Pompidou Center you can see it. It is a hidden gem. We got in just by chance, after visiting Pompidou Center.

I found this by accident and fell in love with it. This church is beauty personified and seems to be forgotten or not recognized. The altar must be seen in order to appreciate the beauty it gives to all who pay a visit. I went back a second time to make a donation to help in some small way. Please... More

Staying in Les Halles

Neighbourhood Profile
Les Halles
Historically the central iron-clad market of Paris, Les Halles has evolved architecturally since then but the pulsating energy has stayed the same. Now it houses the main shopping mall, which nestles underground surrounded by fast-food take-aways and international restaurants coupled with beautiful churches and the old commodity exchange. Parallel to it are the high-street stores of Rue de Rivoli and just parallel to that the Seine. The area bustles with faces from all continents and all ages at all times of the day. If enjoying high-street shopping with easy access to fast eateries and lively bars is on your agenda, this is the place to go.
