About
Located in the 1st and 2nd arrondissements, this charming pedestrian street is filled with bistros, boulangeries, and a trove of must-try foods. As one of Paris' permanent market streets, Rue Montorgueil is also lined with shops selling high-quality local produce such as cheese, bread, and fruits. Don't forget to visit Stohrer, the oldest patisserie in Paris which was established in 1730. For time-pressed travelers, a tasting tour of this renowned street is highly recommended. Otherwise, it’s also easy to navigate independently at your own pace. Most shops will close on certain days, so check the opening hours beforehand to avoid disappointment. – Tripadvisor

The area
Neighbourhood: Les Halles
Historically the central iron-clad market of Paris, Les Halles has evolved architecturally since then but the pulsating energy has stayed the same. Now it houses the main shopping mall, which nestles underground surrounded by fast-food take-aways and international restaurants coupled with beautiful churches and the old commodity exchange. Parallel to it are the high-street stores of Rue de Rivoli and just parallel to that the Seine. The area bustles with faces from all continents and all ages at all times of the day. If enjoying high-street shopping with easy access to fast eateries and lively bars is on your agenda, this is the place to go.
How to get there
- Étienne Marcel • 3 min walk

If we could live in this neighborhood, we would. The major feature is this market street with all sorts of fresh food to take back to your apartment, and all sorts of restaurants and cafes to sit in. It really comes alive at happy hour when the young folks jam the cool cafes and the activity continues. On either side of this market street you will find 18th Century Paris, lots of history, and lots of pedestrian streets.

Probably the best pedestrian street in Paris and that says a lot. Lined with cafes, small shops, you can stroll seemingly endlessly. If you start at the now modern Les Halles, your walk northward will take you back ward in time one store front at a time. Once you're done, somewhere around Rue Reaumur, you can zip over to Rues St Denis for a return trip down another fascinating street.

We only discovered this little traffic-free haven on our last day or we would have spent a lot more time there. The oldest patisserie in Paris is here - and still going strong - but there are plenty of other sweet attractions with cafes and restaurants galore. Worth a detour if you are walking nearby.

Very nice street full of shops, bars and restaurants. Pleasant because partially pedestrian but black people.
Everything is expensive but it seems normal, here money has no value. The temple of bobotitude and sneer. To do if an espresso for 4-5€ seems normal, if a pancake can be worth more than the pan in which it has cooked and if the tip is a habit for you.

If you find yourself with some time on your hands after museum-hopping, boutique shopping, relaxing in gorgeous parks, and walking along the Seine, this neighborhood is a lively, pedestrianised section of the city just north of the major destinations of central Paris. It is well worth a stroll among the many outdoor cafes, bars, and restaurants and it is surely a treat to see (and perhaps even to dine at) some of the local landmarks, including the Rocher de Cancale, where Honore de Balzac and his cohorts once hung out, and L'Escargot Montorgueil, which is said to have been the favorite restaurant of no less than Charlie Chaplin. Don't miss the atmospheric, narrower side streets and alleys, which tend to be less frequented. And if you need to refuel before your next destination, there are sweets on offer at Stohrer (# 51) , the oldest surviving bakery in Paris!

Streets of old in this area as it's the original quarter where Les Halles was until 1971 or so. The streets are a step back in time and it's not hard to envisage how busy the markets were here just over 50 years ago. Shops and lots of eateries and bars.

This was one of our favourite streets in all of Paris during our two month stay. It is so ingrained in us that small is expensive (specialty shops)and big is cheap, (supermarkets) - but so not true in Paris. This is what we so loved with Rue Montorgueil, there is such an array of shops, we could spends hours, exploring the delights.
Our favourites were:
Maison Collet, for bread, (baguettes).
La Fermette, Cheese, which was a amazing, and excellent value
Le Palais du Fruit, amazing deals on summer fruits in winter
Fran prix, small super market, good deals.
Definitely a must visit at least once

Rue Montorgueil is thriving and locally popular cafe-lined street that run parallel just north of les Halles. Several traffic-free lanes cross this street, creating a delightful area for pedestrians. Once home to big warehouses and wholesale places to support the market, the area is now home to cafes and cute bistros.
Among the few food shops are, most importantly for tourists, the irresistible creations at Patissier Stohrer, where the French expression for "window licking" must have started.
My 4 stars because we arrived there at 9:30 am and many cafes and restaurants were still closed and this did not leave us much choice for contemplation or admiration. I advise you to come here during lunch when most shops and restaurants are open. Getting there: metro stop Etienne Marcel or Les Hall, from both stations add to walk 3 minutes.

We were staying in the area and needed to pick up a few groceries. This area has everything you need and more! So many specialty shops as well as your basic grocery stores. We went in the evening so a few shops were closed but the bars and restaurants were busy and sidewalks were full of people standing around with a drink in hand. Very fun vibe on this pedestrian only area.

We got to know rue Montorgeuil when we began a series of visits to the 2nd arrondissement about 5 years ago. With each visit I appreciate it more. Don't miss La Fermette for cheese and Storher, the wonderful patisserie that was good enough for Marie Antoinette. Nuxe is a recommended spa and where do I begin for cafes? So much great selection and so many Parisians just going about their lives, for you to observe, if that interests you.

I will be traveling in November with my Mom who I will be pushing in a fold-up wheelchair (12” rear wheels). We arrive on a Wednesday around 2pm on the Eurostar and are considering going to Rue Montorgueil to walk around and get lunch. We are then heading to the Louvre. Is there another similar location that might work better on the way to the Louvre for a wheelchair? She is able to get out and walk short distances and up/down a few steps. Will the walking route from Rue Montorgueil to Louvre work for a wheelchair (ex: not hilly)? How successful might we be at hailing a taxi from the market area? I don’t see any good backup bus routes. The rest of our plan is Louvre to Champs Elysees area hotel (taxi or bus 72 to 73). Next day: taxi or Bus 73 to 62 Notre Dame, Then taxi or Bus 27 to 72 to Eiffel Tower, noon lunch at Restaurant 58 (Mom’s request) then Bateaux Parisians Seine cruise. Bus 42 back to Gare du Nord for Eurostar return trip @ 7:15pm. Does this all seem reasonable pushing a wheelchair in November? Are there better bus routes that I'm not finding? Should we just plan on all buses with the transfers or will we have a chance at finding a Taxi? Thank you.

streets can be navigated by wheel chair with some planning. Rue Montorgueil to Louvre is almost flat. There might be few steps to walk up and down the stairs because wheel chair ramps are not located is most places. The distance is about 1 mile.
I think you have too many locations to cover in a short time. Pace slowly to enjoy and not get too tired of walking / moving wheel chair etc.

Hello,
This is my 1st trip to Paris (58 years old) and I'd like to stay in this area as it looks so Parisian and I love food.
Since you've stayed 3 times can you share the Apartment rental information?
Do you think this area is better than the left bank or St. Germain des Pres?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

We stayed at Rue dMontorgueilil apartments, which are/is not actually on that street, but just slightly off. I can't comment in regards to comparison. All of central Paris is convenient if you're prepared to take the Metro (download the Paris Metro APP), and be prepared to walk. The area is just off RER Line B from CDG . Numerous Metro stations are nearby. Tons of restaurants and grocery stores. We are 70 years of age BTW. anything further?

Bonjour,

One of our classmates who is French took us to this street this afternoon...as we are studying at Le Cordon Bleu, so this area is a heaven for us as it has so many big shops. where we can find bakery items and even a bookstore named Gourmande where only the gastronomic books are sold...will come back this place next week!
Written 19 June 2015
The bookstore is at 92-96 Rue Montmartre and is called Librarie Gourmande. Wonderful place.
As for bakery items, suggest that if the large department stores aren't enough, they do have quite a range of speciality stores such as A. Simon at 48 and 52 rue Montmartre or La Bovida at 36 rue Montmartre or Mora at 13 rue Montmartre or Deco Relief at 6 rue Montmartre [seeing a theme here . . . all in the same Rue!!]. Enjoy
