These are animals and not toys. Maybe some of the animals are cute, but the cages are poorly maintained and these animals may not be happy.

A very old zoo with some very antiquated enclosures but it does have some charm. First time I've ever seen binturongs and the red pandas were entertaining. It is a small place and unless one walks very slowly it's a two hour visit at the most.

Looking through the eyes of an adult, the ‘Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes’ is a below-average city zoo with few remarkeble animals in poorly maintained cages (and too many times just empty ones). Also not really cheap, when compared to other zoos in Europe. But, when travelling with kids, even a below-average zoo can be a relaxing alternative to the... More

The gardens are very large and I'm sure in the summer are very nice. However the zoo was very poor. It needs a major reconstruction. The big cats although very healthy looking and obviously well looked after are in cages which are not suitable for these animals, there is not enough room for the cats to roam, they were pacing... You might recognize the tiger''s cage from the Madeline books of Bemelmann. It's a old and charming zoo that is perfect for a casual stroll with a child. The charm might even appeal to older children. In fact, the whole parc is very low key and is energizing. I suggest you consider arriving or leaving by the Batobus which is... More

I understand that some of the older structures are probably listed/protected and therefore difficult or maybe even impossible to modify or upgrade, but many of the enclosures need refurbishing. Quite a few of the animals showed signs of stereotyping and there seemed to be a lack of basic stimuli in many enclosures. I think a fair bit of time and... More

La Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes was inaugurated in 1794 and is one of the oldest zoos still open to the public in the world. I read that in Europe only the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria, is older as it was founded in 1752. It is surprising to see a zoo in the centre of Paris (5th arrondissement) but... More

It is a nice place inside the city that makes you feel like in countryside. It' s fun for the kids.. It has some very strange animals..you can also combine it with the museum of Natural history and the museum of Dinosaurs..Or you can just go for a walk in the park between them..

This would be a great place to visit, due to the quirky old enclosures and features, if it wasn't for the fact they still keep animals. I thought the conditions were appalling, especially in such a developed wealthy country as France. Such a shame because everything else in the area and Jardin des Plantes is so lovely - the shabbiness... More

Staying in Quartier Latin

Neighbourhood Profile
Quartier Latin
The Latin Quarter bursts with intellectual life, architectural splendour and ongoing merriment. The small streets are filled with classical buildings, student bars and lively eateries while the squares are dominated by historic monuments. The area is defined by the 800-year-old Sorbonne University, where Latin once prevailed, and is famous for the Pantheon which celebrates the great men and women of France. During the day students rush from classes to the library and intellectuals people watch from the terraced cafés. As night time falls the surrounding establishments fill up and the merriment really begins. The liveliest parts are around Rue Mouffetard, lined with crêperies and international street food eateries, and Place de la Contrescarpe characterised by terraced brasseries, this neighbourhood provides real nourishment for the mind, belly, and soul.
