About
The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral Paris—meaning ‘Our Lady of Paris’—is a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture. Built back in the 12th century, the important monument has witnessed many historical events. It has also inspired Victor Hugo’s story of the Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Outside the cathedral, you can admire its grand exterior which is framed by an elegant pair of bell towers, stained glass windows and an ornately decorated facade with grand statues.
You can also enter the cathedral for a small entrance fee to view Nio-Gothic artwork and furniture as well as join their weekly sessions.

Top ways to experience Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ile de la Cité / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,370 contributionsCan't wait until the restorations are done and you can go in againCompletely stunning despite the fact that most of the exterior is surrounded by scaffolding. Part restoration and part repairs from the 2019 fire, it is both amazing and sad to see. Due to its amazing history and importance to the history of France, there is clearly a major effort taking place to restore this beautiful place. Of course it would be preferable to see this in its natural beauty but we will just have to come back for that some other year once it is completed.Visited October 2022Written 7 December 2022
- MessyBun2020Denver, Colorado178 contributionsStill worth to see from the outsideYes, it's under construction after the fire. But surrounding the church is really interesting photos of what happened and what they are doing to restore the church. I was with friends who had been here before the fire so it was interesting to hear them talk about what they remember vs what it is now. You can't go in, obviously, but being there and seeing it from the outside is still amazing. Take the time to look at what they have around the building, explaining everything. Super interesting how they are preserving and restoring this amazing church.Visited August 2022Written 14 December 2022
- Lior RKrakow, Poland97 contributions2nd visitWe went to see the place on a great day. As this is my second visit, once after the fire and this time it was still reconstructed, so we didn't get the chance to get inside.although it was a hectic week during Christmas it was inspiring to view it from the outside..Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 23 December 2022
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,038 contributionsStill pretty and worth visiting even though the insides are burntWhile unfortunately had a fire during renovations, visiting the site's exterior is still worth it! The cathedral is still pretty. Any damage from the fire is clearly not external. It does suck that there's opaque fencing around the site, but it just covers the lowest part of the cathedral.Visited December 2022Written 20 January 2023
- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,023 contributionsGotta See ItEven with the horrific fire damage, this is simply a "must see" if you visit Paris. You cannot access the interior while they clean up from the fire, but you can still admire this amazing, historic cathedral from a short distance away. Be prepared for large crowds and give yourself ample time to walk around the structure and take in its eternal beauty. You may be fortunate to encounter a dancing musician as we did, which only adds to the sweet music of this special place. Numerous shops and restaurants are close by so plan to spend some time here during your Paris visit.Visited October 2022Written 1 February 2023
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia997 contributionsMajestic Cathedral of ParisDespite the fire and ongoing repairs, you can still get quite close to the cathedral and see the work and enjoy the facade. It's also well seen via boat tour. At present, the plan is to reopen in Spring 2024 before the Summer Olympics. Everyone is working heard to have it ready in time as it's an icon of Paris and a point of pride. Although you cannot presently go inside due to the renovations, you can book a VR tour with "Eternelle Notre Dame" which is a fantastic tour - available by the Cathedral or at La Defense at Cite de l'Histoire right under the Grande Arche. That tour enables you to see the construction from inception to present - including what happened during the fire and the work being done to repair it.Visited December 2022Written 2 March 2023
- TWMIMHorsham, United Kingdom167 contributionsRemains a majestic sight during restoration.Work appears to be progressing well on restoring this icon of Paris to its former glory in time for the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games. Since the fire the interior has been closed to the public but the majestic twin-towered facade remains an impressive and imposing sight. We were happy to stand and gaze at it in awe on this occasion, and look forward to the day when the whole building is restored and open for interior visits again.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 March 2023
- sarpor273 contributionsBeautiful, even under ruinThe devastating fire that took hold of Notre-Dame obviously devastated the place, but work is well under way to restore it. The whole area has changed since we were last here and there seems to be less space outside to stand around. Still beautiful to see.Visited April 2023Written 3 April 2023
- Caleb K4 contributionsStill a must-seeEven after the fire, the Notre Dame Cathedral continues to inspire and amaze with a renewed purpose. The grand front section of the cathedral still stands tall and although the main part of the building is covered in scaffolding, this can be viewed as proof of the active restoration. There are signs that explain the plans for the restoration as well as the significance of the cathedral and what happened due to the fire; these signs include photographs of the restoration efforts and the Cathedral before and after the fire. Overall, even in its most vulnerable state, Notre Dame is still worth visiting, and I can't wait to see it again in its full grandeur.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 April 2023

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is the most important religious building in Paris. It is located in the Cité Island, just in the center of the city. We came to the square, which is located just in front of the cathedral and we could see it. Really it is fantastic and I hope it will be repaired totally in few years after the big fire. We only could walk around the building ansld I could explain to my 7 years old daughter, what happened (in fact, she remembered to see the big fire on TV some years before). Wonderful building! I have visited it sometimes in the past, and I hope to enter again in a near future!

... but not soon, this grandest of places will be able to be visited once more. Until then go see it at night as the lighting does pick out the marvellous architecture that still remains.

Although it is still under construction for repairs from the fire you can see the outside and there is a seating area to be able to go up and see the cathedral from above street level just a bit.

(Nov '23) Since April 2019 Norte Dame has not been open to the public and it still the case ~ they are hoping to be open for the Paris Olympic Games 2024! With that said you can still go to the Cathedral for free and watch the progress from the exterior. They even have large bleachers to sit on to watch. There is a Huge Fence surrounding the Cathedral but you can see from about 8' and up ~ and still great views of the gargoyles.

Because I was in the area, I decided it would be irresponsible of me to miss the chance to check on the progress of the renovation. The cathedral is still a magnificent and reassuring sight, and there were large numbers of people there to observe the continuing restoration work, take photographs, and take in its splendour and beauty, which were unaffected by the scaffolding and cranes that surrounded it. I'm sure that I'm not the only person who is looking forward to visiting Notre Dame after it has been restored to its previous glory.

The site is amazing and extremely informative since the fire. There is a wall that tells the whole story of the structure, the subsequent fire and the rebuilding process. But, be careful. A few blocks away, near the bridge over the Seine, my phone was stolen by a pickpocket. My whole life was in that phone, including photos of my visit, my travel documents and tons of important data. Recovery is a nightmare.

We visited in September on 2018. The cathedral was so beautiful! The architecture and the art combined with the history created a wonderful not-to-be-missed visit.

The rebuilding work is still under way so you can't go in. However you can see some of the supporting structures and there is a really good exhibition round the building site that explains the work that they are doing and compares the methods they are using to those used in the past.

No, but they do have some information about the restoration posted along the barriers. It was interesting to walk around the cathedral and read about the fire and the plans to rebuild.

Is mass still being held at Notre Dame? We are visiting in October, and I heard there are English masses, so we really wanted to go. Thanks in advance!

Notre Dame will be closed for renovation and repair. Mass will be held at St Germain d'Auxerrois, near the Louvre museum, with the Archbishop presiding Sunday evening, I couldn't find information about the mass in English. concerts will also transfer to this church,

We are looking to visit Paris around the end of August. Will it be open to the public and for tours by then? Or will only some parts (or none of) Notre Dame be opened?

It is a definite NO. You can take a river cruise and see the back of the building from the river but it will take YEARS to renovate. There are plenty of other things to visit. Take a hop on hop off bus tour, there are several routes and you see a lot.
