However, the big draw for me were the modern stained glass windows installed in 1974 by artist Marc Chagall. The windows are located in the axial chapel and took six years to complete. The end result is stunning with six 10 meter high lancet windows and a small rose window above.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 December 2023
- SurvivoryLuxembourg City, Luxembourg1,107 contributionsImpressive is the wordI guess you could argue that if you have seen one of the major cathedrals in France you have seen them all. They do not look that different from eachother. But all of them are very impressive. And dont forget that in Reims you are on the exact place where Napolean was crowned emperor. And you can look through windows painted by Chagal - if that is not impressive then I do not know what is.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2024
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,216 contributionsCathedral of KingsUsed for the coronation of Kings and Queens for centuries - nearly a thousand years - this is a must see if you're into cathedrals and history. With Notre Dame in Paris under renovations until the end of 2024, this cathedral in actuality has more history and more significance and is of similar size and design. Entry is free and guided tours are available at times for a fee. Small giftshop at the entrance as well. It's an impressive cathedral in size, scope, and history. The interior is massive and spectacular - take time to appreciate the stained glass. Best way to get here is via tram.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 March 2024
- 245olegvMadrid, Spain3,812 contributionsExtraordinary piece of the Gothic architecture and important place of France history.Reims Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and historically was a traditional temple lace for the coronation of the Kings of France. One of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture. Although it is thought that the church has been founded in the 5th century, the present day cathedral’ construction started in the 13th century. During the WWI the Cathdral was used as an hospital, but in September 1914 went on fire, the roof was completely destroyed with a lot of damages inside as well. After the war they started restoration, which was completed only in 1938. Among interesting pieces to see: in 1971 Marc Chagall agreed to decorate some windows of the Cathedral, and we can enjoy his work today.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024

- alohatripperHonolulu, Hawaii1,747 contributionsAnother Notre Dame CathedraleNot very far from Epernay is Reims, notable for the Cathedral Notre-Dame. Though I thought the Cathedral Notre-Dame (our second one but still not the most famous one in Paris) in Strasbourg was physically more stunning, this one had special features worth the time to appreciate. Historically, this place is where many French kings were baptized. Moreover, many of the stained-glass windows were designed by Marc Chagall, who was a Jew. By this time, we were satisfied that we visited enough chapels, churches, cathedrals, and basilicas. Everyone is different, of course, and yet there is a commonality that fades the distinctions.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 June 2024

It's impossible not to be impressed by Reims Cathedral, majestic in stature, silent and absolutely stunning. Even the teens were intrigued by its lengthy history. It's enormous, walk around, take it all in. Sit in the silence. We popped in to pray together whilst visiting the Christmas market in. December. There were quite a lot of people around(a good thing) but they were quite noisy( not such a good thing!) nice little kiosk selling small items but also some lovely nativity figures at reasonable prices. A bit hard to find a quiet spot

This is a massive and impressive building full of decorative art, wood work, glass and sculptures. There was no entry fee and the building was open for touring when we were there.
There are many displays with descriptions of areas of interest but not in English so I wasn't able to fully understand them. But I enjoyed looking and if you have a guide book with you it will help.
I was thrilled to see the stained glass windows. Not only were there windows by Marc Chagall but by Imi Knoebel, a new artist to me.
It can take quite a while to walk through and enjoy all the areas within so allow enough time for your visit.
There is a small gift shop where you can buy postcards of the artwork and other things.
There is a public toilet outside the church. You have to pay.

Now that the Notre Dame in Paris is badly damaged by fire, this is one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in France to see at the moment. Its sheer size and beauty leave you breathless. The stained glass windows in the rear by the famous French artist Marc Chagall and German minimalist Imi Knoebel are unique and stunning. Absolutely a must see!

Great cathedral with a lovely atmosphere. The feel of the gothic style cathedrals always have a mystery to them. I really enjoyed the stained glass windows and the Joan of Arc statue and chapel made me reflect on the struggles of Frances history. Powerful stuff.

A beautiful Cathedral In a lovely city, steeped in history, it is famous for being the traditional location for the coronation of the Kings of France. The English held Reims and the Cathedral until 1429 when it was liberated by Joan of Arc which allowed the Dauphin Charles to be crowned King on 17 July 1429.
Take time to just sit inside, reflect and relax for a while. Well worth a visit.

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Reims is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its stunning façade, adorned with intricate sculptures, leaves a lasting impression. Inside, the grandeur of the nave, supported by elegant columns, is awe-inspiring. The stained glass windows, renowned for their artistry, cast a kaleidoscope of colors that bathe the interior in ethereal light. The cathedral's historical significance as the site of French royal coronations adds to its allure. Despite enduring damage during World War I, meticulous restoration has preserved its magnificence. A visit to this iconic cathedral is a journey through time and a testament to human craftsmanship and devotion. It's also free to enter but has a gift shop within which supports it's funding. Highly recommended!

Focal point of the whole city. Will knock most places into a cocked hat. Focal point of the whole area. Inside there are signs in English, French and German. Place it looking a bit Haggard though which is why it was covered in scaffolding. If you want to walk to the top of the cathedral, which is about 250 steps, you have to buy a guided tour, which is done in French only. Reims is where the French kings were crowned and the inside is very impressive, you can imagine Joan of Arc standing here as the French King was being crowned after raising the siege of Orleans. Restoration was carried out on the roof after the German bombing but more significant restoration is required which will cost millions to repair. If they can spend a fortune doing up Notre Dame then why not this place, it really is beautiful. This is much more significant and must be saved for French History. Best photographed in the morning before all the tourists arrive.

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims (Dutch: Cathedral of Our Lady of Reims) is a cathedral from the 13th century in the French city of Reims. It is one of the most important Gothic buildings in France. The cathedral is historically important because the kings of the Kingdom of France were crowned here and the Joan of Arc episode took place here.
The number of statues that adorn this cathedral is greater than any other European cathedral. The sculpture of Reims Cathedral is considered an important example of medieval sculpture. The central portal on the west facade is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The image of the "Angel with the smile" is especially famous; it has become the symbol of the city of Reims
The construction obviously cost a lot of money and the city residents were forced to pay for it, through taxation by the king and the demand for payment for religious services by the Roman Catholic Church. When taxes were increased again in 1233, the inhabitants of Reims protested. They drove the canons out of the city and built barricades of building materials. This lasted for three years, until the king intervened violently. Citizens who made their voices heard through the protest were imposed high fines and their houses were razed to the ground.

Stopping at the Reims Cathedral was part of our Viking Cities of Lights river cruise with leaving the ship at Trier and heading to Paris. We had a specific time with a local guide to go through the Cathedral and it makes a huge difference when you have a knowledgeable guide. This Notre Dame Cathedral is bigger than Notre Dame in Paris and where a number of French kings had their coronation. The stain glass is beautiful and especially the Marc Chagall stained glass. This was worthwhile to visit on our way to Paris.

I visited many years ago and am sure we viewed some beautiful and very old clothing - Copes, Mitres etc and paraphernalia of the clergy. We are revisiting next week. Can anyone confirm that I didn't imagine seeing these and if I didn't are they still there. Thank you

Hi, is Towers of Reims Cathedral the same as Cathedral Notre-Dame de Reims? I noted that one is going to close for a period in May. Thus, I am unsure if it means that both are closed.
Thank you!
Written 23 May 2019
The Towers are part of the Cathedral, but a seperate attraction.
A visit to the Cathedral itself is free (although it is always good to make a small donation), but a visit to the Towers costs 8 Euro. There are discounts applicable for groups, young people and some EU residents.
I understand that the Towers are closed on certain days between now and 14 June, but the Cathedral should be open. It is worth a visit. The stained glass panels are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
Enjoy Reims!

We visited many cities and all the Cathedrals in France were free. Donations are welcome. You do not book but may stand in line during popular times like when they reopen after the lunch time closure.
