After travelling to a few Champagne Houses throughout the day, seeing Louis & Jade at G.H Martel was an amazing experience.

Although my French is minimal, the pair of them were so welcoming and friendly and made me feel at home right away, even though I hadn’t made bookings as is expected across Reims.

With quality advice, explanations and good chats, I would highly recommend visiting these two and sampling some of the amazing Champagne that G.H Martel make ☺️. 100% an experience I would recommend to anyone visiting Reims.

Very enjoyable visit (in English) for our little group; this is not the visit of a big Champagne maker with electric trolleys, but we got a very good idea on how Champagne is made, in the cellars of the house, followed by a tasting of 3 Champagne. Our guide (a young lady from the area) had a very extended knowledge of the region, and could answer all the questions from the group. If you want to avoid big groups visit, more personal guidance, this is the one.

My husband and I stopped in for a tasting. There was only one other couple in the tasting room and Adrianna (hope I got the name right) quickly welcomed us and sat us in a comfortable side room where we sampled a few different champagnes -all very good. The best part of the tasting was getting to know Adrianna. She knows so much about champagne and was able to help us understand the Martel selections and appreciate all the work that goes into a bottle of bubbly. She was just such a nice person, it made our afternoon so special. If you go for a tour/tasting, I hope you get Adrianna

Excellent experience. Interesting tour of the caves and explanation of the champagne process. Louis - our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The tasting was very good and we had the opportunity to ask Louis questions- learning a lot about Champagne. We returned several days later to purchase our favourite champagne and glasses before heading home.

Excellent tour. Interesting history and the champagne process was well worth hearing about. Louis explained things really well.

Also much better value that the large champagne houses.

The caves are chilly so a jumper would be helpful but not a requirement

An informative and insightful look into this family run champagne business. The tour of the underground caves and the history of the town was so interesting. And the tastings were generous in size and delicious. Our guides were courteous and friendly. Definitely recommend.

For a small Champagne House, this one was fantastic No bells and whistles but not needed, for the quality of this tour was the tops and not lacking in anything.
Sound information provided by Louis and Jade, both who spoke excellent English and were able to answer any question put to them. My husband has a small disability regarding walking but they made him very comfortable upstairs while I went on the cold underground tour which was such fun. Thank you so very much Louis and Jade. We shall like very much to come back. Stay well and smiling. Jade keep reading and watching English TV :) Maggie & Paul

In Reims, not a lot of options open the Sunday, so we turned to Martel who appeared to be one of the lesser known houses open for a visit.

Expecting to learn a little about Martel champagne, history of the brand and a guided dégustation through their cuvées, we were sorrily mistaken.

Firstly, to set the scene, upon arrival, we were greeted by the « guide », on his way out to have a cigarette... who basically suggested that we shouldn’t get our hopes up, given it doesn’t compare to what we could expect from the more premium champagne houses.

Secondly, were were presented 2 options : tour & 15€ Classic tasting or tour & more premium tasting for 25€. Wanting to get a good understanding of Martels more complete offer, we opted for 1 of each.

Heading down to the cellars with the 10 other guests, and the « guide » provided us a very basic explanation of the champagne making process (as you would expect, even if all the houses do this) and guided us through the quarries of Martel that are no longer used and with no production going on. In fact, these quarries are only for show.
With no specific reference to Martel production, we proceeded to ask questions about the house, production, history behind Martel family..to which we were greeted with non chalant responses and « don’t know » when it came to the history. If there was one thing I would expect him to know, it would be that!
This made for a very short, and fairly uninformative visit. Which left us feeling a little short changed.

Moving onto the tastings, and this is where things got particularly peculiar.
We asked for 2additional glasses, so we could share our champagne, to which was greeted with a very abrupt surprise as to why we couldn’t share the same glass?!

With each tasting (there were 3 champagnes in total) the “guide” served the champagne, mentioned the grape varieties and then disappeared.
By the third tasting, we realized it was all over when the said “guide” was seen leaving into the courtyard heading for another cigarette.. he never came back and the 12people left in the room were left looking at each other in surprise and left to their own devices.

It was nothing if not comical. But to be honest it makes me angry that they have the audacity to charge for such a spectacle. For some people, it was the only visit they had in Reims, and what an embarrassment!

I will never forget this visit but unfortunately, not for the right reasons.

Do yourself a favour and organise a real champagne experience with a brand that cares enough about their customers to ensure they are taken care of all year round.

As a sommelier, I’d requested a professional visit to become better acquainted with the Martel brand. When I arrived I was put in the regular tourist group and then charged full price (the only time this happened in 25+ champagne houses).

I wouldn’t have minded so much if the guide had been able to answer my questions, but he couldn’t. His explanation of champagne making was fine. But the tour included no mention of the Martel family or the house’s history, a glaring omission in an industry where each house is backed by its unique family story and heritage. He was also totally uninformed about the company’s business side, even simple questions about their main export markets / split of domestic and foreign consumption etc.

His manner surprised me to say the least. He did not seem at ease leading the group. He openly criticized people for asking for an extra glass so they could share their tastings with each other. He poured our champagne quickly with little tasting guidance, and then disappeared to smoke, leaving the group confused and looking at each other. It was as if he could not wait to get away. At the end, he never came back to the room to conclude the visit or invite us to purchase. We guessed the tour was over and left.

The cellar rooms you visit are no longer in use and have nothing to see except old equipment. Basically, we went underground, had a 40 minute talk about how chamapagne is made, and that was it.

I left not knowing any more about the Martel brand / company than when I arrived, and having spent a fair bit for some average champagne. What a pity that this was some people’s only experience of a champagne house. The most disappointing visit I’ve had in the Champagne region of any house, large or small.

We booked via email which was very easy and efficient. Tours are run in various languages. We booked an English tour.

Upon arrival you can choose the tour with normal tastings for €14 or with premium tastings for €22 (3 tastings each). This is at the higher end of tasting prices in the Champagne region.

We waited in a large room until all the party had arrived and then were shown down to the first level of the cellars to watch a video. This is a standard industry-created video explaining the champagne process. You may see this video elsewhere (we saw the same video at Charles Mignon in Epernay).

After the video the guide led us down to the main cellar level and explained more about Martel. He said it was his second tour in English and was nervous but his English was fine - he should not worry at all! There were some old artefacts and he had some interesting snippets. As a group of 10 everyone was comfortable asking questions and it was nice and informal.

After the cellar tour it is back upstairs for the tastings where we were joined by another member of staff who was keen to take questions and share his knowledge. Even though we have been on several tours and tastings there is always something new to learn! The champagne was very nice as well.

Some 'special offer' boards were put up but to be honest I think this was just marketing when you broke the prices down. However there was no pressure at all to buy, in fact the shop is in a separate room to the tastings. We bought a couple of bottles.

Overall a tour of a mid-sized house that doesn't have the impressiveness of say Taittinger and isn't as intimate as the independent vignerons, but takes the best from both of these.
