- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,475 contributionsWow! Stunning. Plan for a hike with shoes and attireThis place is just really cool. We got here early in the day based on things we’ve read and even very late in the season we saw why at the end of our time here. Pro tip, we parked in the Vintgar Zgornje lot across the river from the entrance. It’s a little bit of a walk before and after but we parked for free early in the day (you likely will have to pay if you come later) and we avoided the mass congestion of cars at the main parking lot that is also significantly higher prices for parking. The path through the gorge is one way but you go at your own pace and have MANY places to stop for photos or just to admire. Can’t say enough about how beautiful this place is. At the end of the trail, there are three options to get you back to the main entry point. The one we took had us going through a small village and through the forest at the top of the gorge. If you plan to come? Bring and wear your hiking shoes and not shoes you are not afraid to possibly scuff or get dirty. Much of the path through the gorge is on wooden paths but they can also be very slippery. The routes back are decidedly less manicured and you are in for some hiking.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- PhilMaloneFootscray, Australia1,471 contributionsA hidden gem in the Slovenian forestA beautiful gorge as you discover via a winding track hugging the side of steep rocky cliffs. It provides a great range of photos and is peaceful and refreshing to do the long walk - less people attempt this so crowds are down a bit. This is one of Slovenia's hidden gems.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- JaapVeghel, The Netherlands162 contributionsStunningly beautiful river walkVery nice to have a walk alongside this beautiful river. It is an easy walk with stunning river views with small rapids. Maybe this is very touristic in the high-season and that would make the walk crowded, but during our visit this was oke.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 January 2024
- Judike2United Kingdom402 contributionsNot to be missed !Visited early May, parked motorhome at P3 Park and Ride car park. €5 cash including shuttle bus to ticket office. €10 tickets, helpful English speaker there. As it was Sunday we expected it to be very busy, but not many people at all. As it's a deep gorge, overhead midday sun gives the best lighting. Lovely walk along the boardwalk. Plenty of water in the river. Lots of photo stops. At the snack kiosk, hand over your helmet and choose the shorter blue trail to the left or the longer green trail to the right. But first, go down the steps past the loos to the viewpoint of the waterfall. We took the green route up through the forest. When you reach a small church St Catherines, turn right over the carpark and through a gate. The views are amazing. Benches along the way to rest and absorb the scenery. The path leads back to the ticket office and shuttle bus. We did it all in 3 hours and really enjoyed it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024
- emmechelleInternational Falls, Minnesota487 contributionsIt's a tourist site for a reasonIt is beautiful. We visited when uncrowded in the first week of May. The color of the water makes it unique, even if you've seen many similar gorges . I dont think i would want to do it in peak season when packed with people as you can experience the river and its color in other less crowded spots. But, then again, to visit Bled and NOT do it wouldn't make sense.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- Suzie GCape Town, South Africa204 contributionsBeautifulThis gorge is one of the most beautiful ones I have seen. It’s definitely worth to visit, the entrance fee is not much (can’t remember the exact amount). There is a well-built path, and it’s a nice walk. You can go in your own pace. There is a small waterfall at the end where you can opt for 2 different routes to go back to the parking area.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Katy P34 contributionsStunning viewsExcellent experience helped by beautiful weather! Stunning views of the gorge Helmets are provided Good shoes recommended but it is not a strenuous walk along the gorge BUT the walk back was long and hard and one we had not prepared for. If you have difficulties on your feet then the gorge itself will be fine but consider the shuttle bus back. Would recommend going for sure.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024
- kimmickunasBattle Creek, Michigan27 contributionsGorgeous!Absolutely beautiful but be careful which trail you pick when you leave. The walk around the base of the gorge is interesting, diverse & has cooler temperatures. I highly recommend coming here. The walk out of the gorge was quite strenuous for me. We picked the shorter one thru the forest. The vertical climb in some places was pretty intense. But after that there is a Pit Stop with food & drink to rest a little bit after the climb. I recommend the Pit Stop too. Really good pizza & cold ice cream!!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 June 2024

Its an easy walk from Bled for people with average fitness, and you begin to see the real Slovenia en route. - Valerie BUnited States85 contributionsBeautiful gorge, but nightmare getting back to entrance parking lot at the end. The gorge is only one wayWe went in a rainy day but still enjoyed it. Beautiful walk through the gorge. It’s quite long. Better than other gorges we’ve seen in Europe. Only thing to be aware of, is that getting back to the parking lot at the entrance is a nightmare. We don’t speak Slovenian, so we couldn’t read the signs. Some vendor of a shuttle company told us it was 7 euros a person to drive us back to the entrance, which we thought was a rip-off considering we’d already paid for the entrance tickets. So we chose to walk back and it took about an hour. It was pretty through a forest, but still. I was so done by that point.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 June 2024

We loved our visit to the beautiful Vintgar Gorge. The public transport options from Bled didn’t seem straightforward, so we booked a return shuttle with Mamut - only 5 Euros each way. The minibus drops you off at the entrance to the Gorge (luckily we also paid Mamut for the entrance tickets so didn’t have to queue). The walk through the Gorge was an easy and leisurely 45 minutes, with lots of stops for stunning photographs. The Gorge walk ends at Sum Falls where there is also a nice outdoor cafe serving coffee and cakes. We then turned right onto one of the return trails. Fortunately our minibus picked us up at the church so we didn’t have to walk all the way back to the entrance. The timings were perfect, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the Gorge (we left Bled at 12:45 and were met at the church at 15:15).

Cliff is beautiful, with great sights and a solid footpath. Construction work on the access roads are not visible on google, and detour signs only i. Slovenian language. Impossible to find the parking spots when arriving from Bled. Should improve. We were forced to park a long distance from the entrance, and tour back had poor signage and also took to long.
Also online ticketing was the only option to get in, but did not allow to bypass the queues. Queues were chaos, with people missing their slots due to unclear communication.
Overall great cliff, but many improvement required in ticketing, access roads and signs.

After 12 years we return to the Vintgar gorges. This time on August 15th. Compared to a long time ago, the charm remains unchanged, however this natural wonder, like the whole of Slovenia, has also been discovered by everyone... the result? Long queues and overcrowding. To avoid the problem we arrived early 8.20am and enjoyed a beautiful and fresh walk. Furthermore, arriving at that time we parked at P1 which is the car park closest to the entrance. The ticket can be purchased online (and you skip the entry queue) or on site. Given the time, having purchased the ticket on site, the queue was almost non-existent. The walk is suitable for everyone (even our 5 year old had fun). The problem is if ever on the way back. Unlike years ago, you can no longer go back on the same route for reasons of crowding and safety. To return to the car parks there are several routes in the woods with moderate slopes (unsuitable for strollers). Having finished the visit early, we took advantage of a shuttle service which took us to the starting point for 7 euros per adult. Excellent service and given the route also made cheaply.
Obviously I recommend visiting the gorges at other times than weekends and mid-August and if like me you are "forced" to do it at these times, prefer the early morning (at 10.20 when we returned to the car park the crowd at the entrance was notable) . Obviously the show is guaranteed. The cost? Congruous 10 euro parking, 10 euro ticket per adult. Up to 5 years you pay a symbolic 1 euro.

Crystal clear water - magical when not crowded. Book online to secure a spot - choose an early start as crowds increase (significantly) as the day goes on. Parking at the Gorge is for online ticket holders only (although they didn't check ours) - parking however is not included in your online ticket purchase so have cash ready for the attendant. Walk through the gorge is one way only and INCREDIBLY scenic. 35min walk from Exit back to the Entrance car park is largely shaded but quite steep. There are shuttles apparently but didn't investigate these. We obviously drove to the Gorge but others walked from Bled. We were happy to have a shaded walk back to our car park as the walk back to Bled is quite exposed and would be quite hot.

For a long time I have wanted to visit the "famous" Vintgar canyon. As the road to the parking lot was closed, my fiancée and I took a shuttle ride to the canyon entrance and back. Of course, by some miracle, the shuttle bus has access to the very entrance to the canyon, although no one else has that pleasure. At the shuttle transport agency, for unknown reasons, they gave us a little more than 2 hours to cross the canyon and reach the church of Sv. Catherine where the transport was to wait for us. Those two hours are barely enough to walk through the canyon, let alone stop for a moment, rest or take a few photos. And of course what no one is telling you: when you cross the canyon and get to the awful catering facility, you realize that the waterfall is a little further away. And time flows relentlessly. But the real torment is just beginning, because you soon realize that they forgot to mention that it is a 25-minute walk to the church of St. Katarine is actually a real mountain venture that I would not recommend to the elderly or people in poorer condition. But as time goes on relentlessly, you just have to keep up the pace of Usain Bolt, because the shuttle isn’t waiting for anyone. My wish has thus turned into a real nightmare for which you have to pay a considerable sum. I have been through a lot of similar places and I responsibly claim that there are many less famous and much more beautiful places than the Vintgar canyon.

Thank you for reviewing.
Unfortunately, it's never ideal for everyone. In your case the visit was a nightmare, in other cases is 99,9% a wonderful experience.
2.5 km in 2 hours means your walking tempo was 1km/h, we understand everyone has their own tempo, but usually, 2 hours is more than enough. The elevation of a propper mountain is 1000m, you made it only 100m.

Husband and I walked the gorge early morning.
As we had our own car, we parked at St Katherine Church (for free). But we ensured we arrived early (we parked there at about 0715), as it takes approx 35 min to walk to the start of the gorge.
It was easy parking at that time of the morning, although the road up is extremely narrow at times (we dreaded thinking that we might meet a vehicle coming the other way). Lots of parking at the church early morning.
The walk to the gorge was clearly signposted, and do make sure you walk to the start of the gorge as it is a one way track.
It was lovely in the early morning, across fields with only seeing 2 other people (unlike the gorge).
We arrived approx 0800, and bought our tickets (although you can buy them online for a specific time). The tickets are for specific times (10€ per adult) and our entry was for 0812 (very specific), but we did not have long to wait as it was early morning. It would be extremely busy later on.
There are toilets at the start, as well as coffee/snack shop.
When your time arrives, you simply entry through the turnstile, scanning your barcode.
You are then given a helmet which you must wear.
Then just take your time walking the picturesque gorge! Very easy walking, and a number of people had strollers.
It is slow going in parts, as people take time for photos, so just enjoy it. A mixture of sun/shade, although we had mainly shade due to the time of day that we went.
Once you leave the gorge, you then have to return to your start point. For us, we simply walked back to St Katherine’s is actually the steepest part of the whole trip, but is the main, shortest route. Whilst others then had to continue walking back to catch their shuttle (or the start of the gorge), our car was already at St Katherine’s.
Well worth the effort/cost.

The gorges are fascinating and not to be missed for those who love nature. The sound of the water and the fresh air blowing between the rocks are almost hypnotising. The problem is the long queue at the entrance and the inconvenience of parking during periods of tourist overcrowding. Fortunately we had relied on a shuttle service booked in Bled (where we were staying) which for a few euros more provides the transport and ticket booking service (which gives priority to entry). In this way we avoided the queue for parking and the queue at the cash desks and at the entrance. Once you have visited the gorges (about 30-40 minutes), the return to the starting point (or to the shuttle stop) is an uphill walk in the woods, which is also very pleasant even if it may prove a little tiring for some.

This is a must-do for your trip to Slovenia, but it requires a bit of planning in advance. The gorge was overwhelmed with visitors between the "rush hours" of 9:30 and 1 pm, so now there is a reservation system on their website. If you don't have a reserved ticket, you'll be turned away in the parking lot if they're sold out. You could come earlier or later and maybe get lucky after waiting to buy a ticket, but reservations are your best bet.
The walkways and bridges through the gorge are an easy stroll, full of unforgettable photo opportunities from every angle. However, the trail is now one-way, which means that you must take a more challenging hike on a steep mountain trail to get back to the starting point. Turn left at the end of the gorge for the easier path, or turn right to pass by the Sv. Katarina church with splendid views and friendly cows.
This is a popular day trip from Lake Bled or Ljubljana, especially in the summer. I had a great time in October, and the reservation system makes it possible to really enjoy the alpine beauty without the crowds. So visit the website vintgar.si and reserve so you won't be disappointed. Please note that the gorge is closed in the winter.

We booked through Mamut at their shop in Bled (shop is at the main bus drop off in Bled). We were €20 each for a minibus which dropped us off at the entrance, and the tickets to get in. Mamut booked us the tickets and printed them off for us. Would recommend booking through them as was very simple and they dropped us off right at the entrance. They also told us where they would pick us up and gave us plenty time to do the walk and have something to eat afterwards.
There is a toilet and small shop before you enter the gorge. There is also a shop at the end of the gorge and a cafe at the end of the St Catherine trail.
I felt the gorge was underwhelming. I’d read so many good reviews I was expecting more.
Positives - It is beautiful, the water is so clear and you can even see fish swimming in it.
Negatives - We were there at 9/9.30 in the morning and it was already busy. There were numerous bottlenecks which slowed things down. The first few minutes of the walk were good but after that it is just the same scenery for the whole of the gorge walk.
When out of the gorge there are toilets at the bottom of the long set of steps and a viewpoint for the waterfall. We went back on the St Catherine trail (the gorge is one way). The walk was steep but it did take us the 25min that it says it should. We needed to take regular stops as was hard going but manageable.
Overall I would say give it a miss if you are tight on time as there are better things to do in the area.

Thank you for your review. We keep on informing our future visitors about the rush hours between 9:30 and 14:00, we also accepted the restriction with an online ticket to limit the number of visitors, but somehow most of the visitors visit us during the time of rush hours and we are aware that it's not pleasant to walk in the crowd. Because of the crowd, we decided to do the circular routes. Nature is the way it is, the gorge is a "canyon" and to return back to the starting point there is no possibility to avoid the 100m of elevation.

A beautiful and well organised hike. The gorge is accessible by foot from Lake Bled, or public bus or you can drive and pay €10 for parking.
We opted for the walk from our hotel in Lake bled which made the journey a little longer but we enjoyed and enjoyed the day out.
The gorge one way route is lovely mostly downhill on a wooden path with some steps, very well maintained and they ask you to wear a hair net and helmet for this first bit, entry is €10 pp for adults. It’s pretty impressive seeing the natural beauty the water is so clear and powerful and we enjoyed on a reasonable day with not too many crowds. You have toilets at the start and again at the end but not in between. It’s about 1.5 km To the end of one way trail. From there you can exit the park, or continue on via 2 routes one is a little shorter, with some step climbs but in a forest area the other is longer with panoramic views we didn’t take this one so I can’t comment on that. It was the different of 2.6km and 4.1km for the longer route I believe.
There were a few cafes shops but I’d recommend bringing snacks, water and hiking /walking shoes. Great half day activity or full day if you stopped more and took your time. Not suitable for strollers or those less able to walk distances/ step inclined.

Hi I think the powers that be advertise that the gorge is closed at certain times of the year in case of snow or inclement weather, and then maybe they decide on the day (especially as early in the winter season as November) whether to open. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Contacting the gorge itself would probably be your best bet.

There was a parking person directing us where to go and park when we went. There are two parking lots and we parked at the 2nd one slightly further away from the first one which wasn't bad. We got there around 10 am. There is a price for parking, maybe 5 Euro or something.

Hi, I’m travelling to Bled on February and was wondering how do I get from Bled to this place? Is it even open during that time? And how long do you recommend to spend time hiking here? Thanks in advanced x

Hking sounds nice but in Feb there could be a lot of snow. Details of winter opening I do not know. There would be public transport available.
