Description:

Louis-Philippe, who held dear the celebration of French historical memorabilia, wanted Pau, so linked to the memory of Henri IV, to be part of this artistic programme, and a major contribution to his political credibility. Himself unable to visit the site, the king kept abreast of the work at his Bearnaise residence, while the Dukes of Orléans, Némours and Montpensier were entertained there with all due ceremony. The important purveyors to the Crown created an original suite of furniture in the then fashionable neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style for the chateau of Pau. These furnishings are an example of the authentic decoration of a royal abode under the July Monarchy. The tapestries on show at the château of Pau are, virtue of their number and quality, one of the most valuable collections in France.

Go and visit this magnificent French monument rich in history. Your eyes will be in awe before all the tapestries, paintings and furnitures dating from 17th century and beyond. It is a MUST DO without doubt when in Pau. Such a shame that the "salle au 100 couverts" and "La salle des armuriers" were closed in preparation of an exhibition.... More

The chateau is interesting and significant historically, and has some good contents on display. However, the old days when you had to have a visite guidee to every historical building in France are now long gone, I'm pleased to say. So the fact that this chateau can only be visited with a French guide is rather old-fashioned. Maybe fluent French... More

We visited the Château de Pau when it happened to be the first Sunday, so the bonus was that admission was free, but the tours were considerably busier than they would have been otherwise. The guided tour was in French and although we're were given a printed sheet with a summary of the points for each room I could tell... More

Most people with or without an interest in history will enjoy a visit to the Chateau de Pau. It is a very well preserved example of a medieval chateau setting in a stunning setting with views over the Pyrenees. For those people with an interest in history it is the birth place of Henry IV, one of the most influential... More

Nice and quiet place to visit, the castle has an interesting architecture and a spectacular mountain panorama - specially at the sunrise (i recommend you try to catch the sunrise near the castle)...

I would more recommend the outside of the Chateau, its garden. If you happen to visit inside, choose a guided visit.

The grounds of the chateau are beautiful, as is the interior. However, after having toured several other castles and similar dwellings, this was a bit of a let down for us. We joined a tour that lasted an hour, which is the only way in which you can see the interior. Unfortunately the guide only spoke french, which is understandable... More

Lovely chateau with some amazing furnishings and superbly well preserved tapestries but a long and loud guide in French. A paper translation offered but attempt at English. Still worthwhile but allow a good 90 minutes

Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit properly ; friends who were with us reported they gave up on it when the only option to visit was to take a lengthy guided tour in French ! This may not be the norm but it was that day . Interesting as the birthplace of Henri de Navarre subsequently Henri Quatre of... More

I joined a Spanish-speaking tour - it was well worth it - the guide was fabulous. Its mandatory to take a tour, which is about 50 mins long.
