Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is strange from the very beginning. It is an old Anglican church, and in the porch the British dead from Napoleonic wars are all listed, as well as a plaque about Queen Victoria visiting. Stain glass windows inside dedicated to dead English rugby players. Once the British expats left in the 1980s the church was rescued and turned into this museum. When we arrived, half an hour after it opened, we seemed to take the lady by surprise. She panicked, rushed around, searched behind the desk and issued us with tickets. Then she took us to a side area by the pulpit and switched on a large screen TV, where a fairly long, but quite good film in French told us about the history of Biarritz. While we were watching it she rushed back over and made us find our tickets and switch them for different tickets because she had given us the wrong ones. Eventually we had a chance to browse - one or two exhibits have English explanations, but most don't. Lots of period costumes and old photographs of Biarritz in Edwardian times, during the Belle Epoque etc. Not very expensive, and worth doing on a rainy day.

Frankly, this museum could do with a facelift - it's a bit of a jumble, but an interesting one. It is very peaceful, shows a very good 40-minute film about Biarritz and has a large number of items set out in an old-fashioned way mostly in table-style glass-topped cases. It was good fun and, at 4 Euros, inexpensive.

Take the time to cross to the historical basque museum of Bayonne. Ten times more interesting and instructive about the history of the general area. Of course, it is Basque history, not the glitzy Biarritz history. This is a small museum, run by volunteers. Worth it if you are in the immediate area.

So I visited this museum out of desire to learn more about Biarritz, which actually has its origins in the whaling industry but thanks to its stunning natural setting and the efforts of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, it became a fashionable resort for The Who’s Who of Europe, only reverting to mass tourism after the World Wars. The entry fee is a mere €6 and there is enough signage in English that you’ll get the gist.
I think most people breeze by the entry porch without giving it a glance, which is a BIG mistake. The museum is housed in the deconsecrated Anglican church of St. Andrew, which existed when many British folk lived and vacationed here. The porch has a large marble tablet listing of many of the UK army officers who died on French soil, and Queen Victoria paid her respects here in 1889, followed in subsequent years by her son in 1906 and the Duke of Wellington in 1984. So definitely take a few minutes on the porch. It’s just as historic as the museum’s contents.

We visited the Musee Historique de Biarritz which has been in the Anglican Church of St. Andrew's from the late nineteenth century filled with a rich collection of very varied documents (objects, works of art, video projections…). We were able to learn a lot about Biarritz from when it was a fishing village to a playground for the royals in the mid-19th to early 20th century. Even Queen Victoria stayed there in the Spring of 1889 as well as Russian princes and princesses. The sad part is you can't take pictures inside.

It is nice to learn about interesting facts of the city, centered mainly on the last moments of the city. I missed something related with older fishermen times.

Lots about Biarritz being the favorite holiday place for the aristocracy of Europe - I find that sort of thing fascinating!

It was something like EUR10 for two people to visit a museum with literally one room. It had some cool stuff (posters, British trivia, a few signs in British) but nothing like the pots of treasure that Phillyjanie is getting such a hard on for.
Ultimately if you truly want an authentic taste of Basque culture then go to San Sebastian (not Bilbao as they exaggerate too much). If you can't be bovvered to leave French Basque then Bayonne is your best bet - now there's a tongue twister!

Located beside les Halles, the museum, in an old church, has some interesting photos and descriptions of the English holiday inn in Biarritz (including the Royals) plus similar items on the Russians, Spanish etc.
