This building is one of the jewels of the city. It was regrettable that it was not open except for a few hours a week during religious service hours.

It is a great Romanesque building that has come to this day in a great state of conservation. Apparently inside the passage of time and the different artistic styles of each era have been leaving their mark.

Maybe we were just unlucky, but we failed to get into this abbey church twice. On the first day there was a wedding, on the second day it was simply closed. Judging by the small number of interior photos on the site, many have encountered the same problem. However, even the exterior of the church deserves attention. The current church was built as part of a Benedictine abbey in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, with a Saintonge Romanesque façade. Despite the reconstruction of the famous medieval improver Paul Abadie in the 19th century, the church retained Romanesque features. The carved decor of the portal is instructive. Here is a woman bitten by a snake on the chest, as retribution for lust, and a man pulling the rope, as a symbol of the choice between good and evil. Elders with musical instruments symbolize that it is still possible to get to heaven. They write that the best thing inside the cathedral is the Dom Bedos organ of 1745, named after the creator. However, to hear it, you probably need to get married. At Sainte-Croix Cathedral…

For us it is the most interesting church in Bordoeux . The building is in romanic style and it is quit big and imposing . Inside it is fairly modest , as much as most of local churches . But outside structure is of stunning beauty

I visited many churches, cathedrals and abbeys whilst in Bordeaux and, whilst all were impressive, Sainte-Croix was my personal favourite. The reason for that is the beautiful and extensive carved ornamentation on the façade.
Attractive even at a distance and set in a quiet, handsome square, Sainte Croix really begins to fascinate when you take a closer look. Flora and fauna in of all shapes and sizes caper, crawl and fly all over the limestone architecture. Wound together in a variety of patterns they form arches and columns and fill every conceivable niche. In some respects it reminds me of the Natural History Museum in London.
The interior of the church is pleasant enough and worth a look but it's that wonderful exterior that is the main draw.

The superb architectural details, impressive facade, lovely interior decorations combined with its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to Garonne and downtown males this church the ideal escape for some peaceful time for meditation and prayer, if so inclined.

St. Croix is fairly close to the Garonne in the SE corner of the
city centre, best reached by Tram Line C. You could combine it with a visit to the lofty St Michel Basilica, alight the stop before. Most of St Croix is 800 years old though part of the front was rebuilt in the C19th. It has the feel of centuries to it and the aisles are lined with old paintings. Above the SW door is an impressive organ case. Outside is a large square good for photographing the imposing Romanesque frontage.

It would be difficult to find a better example of 11th-12th century Romanesque in Bordeaux. A delight for those who enjoy that type of architecture.

looks impressive from the outside, with many details to see. Lots of history and stories to explore. HOWEVER it was shut when we arrived (following Lonely Planet), & locals say it opens irregularly.
There is a very nice cafe to the left which operates out of a modern part of the new theatre (not the cafe du theatre next door) - with a very helpful young lady waiter with excellent Englsh who gave us lots of local knowledge, as well as serving brilliant coffe!
