Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

For some reason I thought there would be more chocolate shops than there actually were. They were outstanding but no more than many in Paris. Nevertheless, if you are in the Basque area, it is an enjoyable stroll about the neighborhood near the water and having a cup of rich hot chocolate and thick hand whipped cream is most indulgent.

One short street in Bayonne old quarter with few chocolate stores is a find! They are not just regular chocolate stores, some of them are among the oldest chocolatiers in France. Daranatz and Cazenave are over 100-150 years old.
Daranatz on 15 rue du Port-Neuf is a lovely boutique chocolate. Displays of many chocolate bar collections and other confections are elegantly spread out. We sampled few of their chocolate bonbons; the ginger, the pistache, and the espelette pepper ones.
Cazenave on 19 rue du Port-Neuf is the one on my bucket list. We sat at their sidewalk terrace to savour their delectable chocolat mousseux -- their house specialty. The mousse on this chocolate drink was mixed by hand and the drink is served on a beautiful pink rose Limoges porcelain cup. Service is very lovely.
L'Atelier du Chocolat on 2, Rue des Carmes, corner of rue du Port-Neuf has various chocolate gelatos, chocolate bonbons and various chocolate items. We did sample a couple of their chocolate truffle collections.
Paries on 13 rue du Port-Neuf is the one with the most modern looking store. We bought a couple of their delicious gateaux basque.
To get here by car, we found a municipal parking lot at Place de la Republic, plenty of parking spaces on our Wednesday visit. From here, we walked across the bridge of Petit Bayonne where rue du Port-Neuf is located. When you are in French Basque country, a visit to this district is a must--you will be chocolatey surprised!
