I was in this street with my girlfriend on the occasion of a day in Colmar. It is one of the main streets of the Alsatian city. Here you can see the characteristic colorful houses. The canal that flows between the buildings with the railings adorned with colorful flowers creates a beautiful, almost postcard-like atmosphere. There are many shops and clubs overlooking this street. Definitely one of the places not to be missed in Colmar.

If you're in Colmar the first time, then following the Grand Rue is a good thing to do. It will pass many sights and will get you close to other sights.

The Koïfhus, the Église Saint-Matthieu, the Presbytère protestant, the Maison Sandherr, the Maison Kern, the Maison des Chevaliers de Saint Jean, the Fontaine Roesselmann and the charming Place du Marché aux Fleurs are all to be found along the Grand Rue.

If you step a bit to the left and/or to the right you are only minutes away from the impressive Collégiale St-Martin and Petite Venise.

It's surely a good start. But make sure to wander around the old town a bit more and just dare to get lost in it for a bit. It's a beautiful town with endless sights, great shops and even better food.

The main street of old Colmar. Beautiful with its cobbled streets and timbered Alsatian abodes. Photographs in every directions.

Nice looking, interesting street with a few restaurants and gift shops, but really not a tourist spot.

Altough the main street is very nice, it's not the most beautiful place, Little VEnice is definitly the place you want to go !

However, that street is full with litle shops and tipical houses

We rented an apartment on this lovely street for 4 nights and could not be happier with the location. There were numerous restaurants on the street and just off it ranging from a place to get a tarte flambé to a 2* Michelin restaurant.

There were also shops ranging from high end goods to souvenirs and food markets with Alsatian products galore. A great street to smile down

Not to be missed in Old Town, a great walk, restaurants of all sorts and bars, don't just stay on the main street-- explore the side streets too!

We were so happy as to find self-catered accommodation for four on Colmar’s main street, Grand’Rue, with a view on the attractive spire of St Martin’s church along Rue de l’Eglise from our window. We found everything we needed there: a bakery, restaurants and shops. There even was a small supermarket (Petit Casino) on our ground floor. At night the street was quiet.

Walking to the bakery in the morning, we could look at the sights and take pictures before most tourists arrived. Apart from impressive historic buildings like St Matthews church adjoining the late Renaissance former Protestant presbytery, the so-called House of the Arcades, with its remarkable oriel window (Nos 11 to 19 ), the stunning former Customs House Koïfhus (No 29) and the neo-classical former Palace of the Sovereign Council of Alsace, which is now a court (No 56), the street has a number of interesting houses dating from different periods, for instance at Nos 36, 50, 52, 54, 56 and 78. Very unusual for Colmar is the building at the very beginning of the street in ‘paquebot style’ dating from the mid-1930s. It now houses a Fnac library.

Like so often travellers seem to have used the entry for Grand’Rue to dump totally unrelated pictures taken elsewhere in Colmar. We recognised Little Venice, St Martin’s church on Place de la Cathédrale, Rue des Marchands and Roesselmann Fountain on Place des Six Montagnes Noires. There even are ten close-ups of chocolates, biscuits and cakes from the Christmas market. Rather confusing for people wanting to know what Grand’Rue looks like.
