About
Manchester Cathedral has been centre stage in its city’s history for nearly 600 years. In 1421 Henry V signed a royal charter granting permission for a collegiate church to be built. In 1847 a new Manchester diocese was created and this historic church became a Cathedral. The doors are open 7 days a week and the admission is free. Do not miss one of the most interesting churches in the land at the heart of one of the most exciting cities on Earth.

- AlexSwallowSheffield, United Kingdom1,652 contributionsNot your 'average' cathedralIn many ways- from the lack of pews to the modern stained glass to the design of the organ, this cathedral feels quite different to what I'm used to. A really good integration of old and new with lots of interesting things to see- appreciated being handed a printed guide as we entered. I also like cathedrals you don't have to pay to visit, which never sits right with me- so top marks on that score too.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- mayccm2018Hong Kong, China1,226 contributionsWonderfulThe architecture was beautiful and stained-glass windows were modern. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful. There were some sculptures and artworks there. Free admission. Convenient location. We delighted to admire rehearsal of the show also. Definitely worth.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 April 2024
- Martin RIstanbul, Türkiye36 contributionsSee the ChoirCame in during the Eversong choir performance, which was actually my first time witnessing a church service (I’m not Christian) as well as my first time hearing an organ being played. That was a nice experience, though tbh I wouldn’t really recommend for just visiting since there’s nothing to really see inside for tourists. There was also a lot blocked out from viewing. I did like their message of peace during the service and the church members were quite welcomingVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 April 2024
- Cindy DWarrington, United Kingdom1,327 contributionsHoly Communion in a CathedralA visit to the area so thought we would pop into the Cathedral, I timed it just right to take Holy Communion which was really nice to do. This Cathedral isn’t a huge one, but it has a lot of history, lovely stained glass windows, and volunteers if you needed more information. It is free entry but please donate if you can, it costs £3k a day to run a building like this … they need all the help they can get .. if your in the area please do visitVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024
- Clashy10Wicklow, Ireland32 contributionsLovely interesting experience and it’s free entry.Great tranquil experience in the middle of a busy Manchester. And better still, it’s FREE admission, a rarity in today’s world. Very interesting hour or so spent admiring the beautiful architecture. All in all, a gem in the heart of Manchester.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 June 2024
- Sharon SNewport, United Kingdom370 contributionsLovely small cathedral with unique carvingsLovely cathedral with some unique carvings. We were shown by a lovely staff gentleman the history behind the 16th century carvings by the choir stall seats. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The talented choir were in practice during our visit which made the whole visit thoroughly enjoyable. Entrance was free.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024

I visited the cathedral with my partner during a one-day-trip to the city and absolutely loved it altough I could see only one section due to a vintage fair. Staff was really helpful and let us take as many picture as we wanted. Recommended!

We popped in here, to avoid the rain (and admission was free!), not expecting to spend much time. One of the tour guides (a lovely gentleman) asked if we would like a quick tour, but with 4 kids we didn't think they'd be interested! He said he had some interesting facts that the kids would like, and he ended up capturing their attention for a good 30 minutes, spotting bees, dragons and other interesting things inside the Catheral. Thank you for your time, the kids loved it!

Wow, after living in Greater Manchester for 50 years and travelled past the cathedral lots of times never actually been inside it
We went to a craft fair today in the cathedral and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was close up and inside.
The stained glass windows were absolutely incredible
What a wonderful place this is. Would love to go on an official tour so I can see the whole of it .

I took my niece for her first 'big girl' Carol service this year and we settled on the Carols by candlelight event as it's part performance and part sing-along which I thought she'd like and well we absolutely loved it. This Cathedral is a beautiful building, I think that goes without saying but it's also such a part of our city's history. I've been fortunate to always live super close by so it also holds a lot of personal nostalgia for me and I'm so grateful to be able to share this with her now. The Henshaws event was wonderful, great cause, great atmosphere and something I would recommend attending if you love music.

We came in for some respite amidst the bustle of an energetic summer afternoon in the middle of the city. Tranquility descended immediately as we wandered around this very beautiful interior and soaked up the calm. After discovering there was an evening event, my son and I then attended a stunning hour of string quarte music accompanied by 2 ballet dancers ! It wouldn't normally have been our thing but how lucky to experience such a blissful performance at such short notice , it was a highlight of our break in the city.

We visited here today as part of our 2 mile walking circuit of the city from Piccadilly Station. Only the south entrance was open at 10:30 AM on this Sunday so our visit included the morning sermon, joining ~150 others in the sanctuary service. The beautiful organ was playing on our departure to the sobering Glade of Light memorial garden for the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.

The experience was completely spoiled by the lack of seating arrangements and an argumentative “organiser” called Alice. Arriving at 19:20 it’s not unreasonable to expect our 2 x AA seats to be seated together. There was no organisation of seats at all, we were offered separate seats so as not to enjoy the experience together. After being told “I do 150 of these a year”, I would have thought arranging the highest paid seats would not be to much of a challenge for Alice, but apparently that was a service too far. Without any responsibility to make amends, and Alice accusing me of telling her how to do her job, and raising her voice to all who could hear saying “have you read the website”, “it’s free seating, first come first served”, we elected to take 2 seats at the back in a lower tier seating category. “Candlelit Concert” was also poetic license with a total of 2 candelabra with a total of 10 candles in the whole Cathedral. The saving grace was the ensemble who played the classical movements expertly. Great entertainment, garbage experience, thank you Alice!

Beautiful neo-Gothic cathedral with beautiful wooden ceilings, a fabulous choir for priests. Note the angels-musicians placed under the windows on the sides of the central nave. Each of them carries and plays a golden instrument

We enjoyed a free guided tour today with Steve. He was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable. He told us some really interesting facts about the history of the cathedral and we also went looking for bees , dragons and rabbits , hidden around the building . Well worth a visit , especially with an excellent volunteer guide.
