A little smaller than expected. Nevertheless super exhibits very well presented. The role of the Signalman brilliantly demonstrated in the signal box where you can actually have a go at changing points over and changing Signals to clear the main line to allow The Royal Train to pass through the station.

STEAM is a fantastic day out for all the family and represents great value for money. The exhibits are clearly looked after and restored with passion, attention to detail and care. One not to be missed even if you only have an hour or so.

The museum is housed in a restored Grade II listed railway building. This was part of the old Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway, which was one of the largest in the world and operated from 1843 to 1986. Apart from many exhibits of interest to railway engine and rolling stock enthusiasts, it tells the social story of the... More

This is my third visit to STEAM, this time with small children. The displays remain very good although little has changed in the last few years and some things are getting a little tired. There are nods to children here and there but it is not really a children's attraction. This is not a criticism, just a warning, if you... More

The STEAM museum was brilliant and well worth a visit. Both my dad and myself enjoyed ourselves. The amount of information and the restored steam engines are fantastic. An overall great day out for all, I would recommend to all.

The history of Swindon's railway works, and an insight into the lives of the people who built and maintained them. A great variety of displays covering the construction, the maintenance and the running of the GWR railways. And of course, full sized engines and rolling stock.

As my Father and Brothers worked in The Railway Works it was nice to see their names on the rememberance Plaque.

This museum is about trains rather than a museum of trains. Its about who built and worked on the trains and how they lived and how thay built them. Of course there are some fantastic engines there with some great displays and lots of interactive bits which all my kids have enjoyed over the years. The youngest is ten and... More

Very nice museum, also for children. There are lots of things to explore and there are play areas every now and then. We spent two hours here but could have spent easily more.

Fascinating place to visit and would appeal to both Swindon residents and tourists - although probably for different reasons. Loved looking round the various shops, the old steam locos and the section on holiday travel (including Swindon Trip fortnight) - a real trip down memory lane. Also went to the Wall of Names where we had recently arranged for my... More
