Loved the fact that this is very different from all other NT properties, the house in a state of disrepair gives you a real look at how society was changing, with rich families no longer able to fund their homes, upping and leaving everything they owned. As always, the staff were a delight and friendly, wonderful grounds with a great... More

Always enjoy going to Calke, its a favourite local spot for us and the kids. Plenty to see and explore, plus good food, (slow service).

This cluttered grand property is quite vfasinating. The occupants did not appear to throw anything away. Rooms are full of items collected over many many years. There is even a four poster bed hanging sent as a wedding present in 1734 that was still in its packing case. Very well worth a visit. The parkland provides some excellent walking. As... More

We went to specifically see the newly opened apartments. Arrived at 2.00pm and used our NT pass for House and Garden ticket. Welcomed into the Hall where we told the volunteer we were looking forward to seeing the apartments recently showcased on TV "Midlands Today" and Derby Telegraph newspaper. Flabbergasted to be told they were only open between 11am &... More

Made the most out of our national trust membership and visited Calke Abbey, only visited the gardens and the cafe today as the weather was amazing and wanted to make the most of it. The grass is really well kept and there are plenty of big trees to look at and explore, the cafe is really nice with outdoor seating... More

This will be the first of many trips to Calke Abbey, such an interesting place to visit lots of things to see inside the house, not sure about all the stuffed birds etc but it added to the fascination of this very unusual house. The grounds looked beautiful and as it was such a cold day we didn't venture very... More

Calke, having been left more less as the Harpur-Crewe family wished, is an amazing day out for singles, families and groups. It is accessible for everyone, but the most disabled, and there are some amazing sights to behold. The grounds are wonderful, and the restaurant food is worth a visit on its own.

So I fly drones as a hobbyist, unfortunately national trust is not that keen. Although the guy on the gate didn't seem to have much understanding of this and made me pay anyway. £3.60p it cost me for the pleasure. I'm bewildered as too why they wouldn't want the free advertising that allowing us to safely fly would bring? I... More

Been in the house here many times but not around the gardens but today that's what we did. The gardens were quite interesting with lots of boards with notes on them about what was growing etc. there was lots of new lambs around the fields. Great view of the reservoir which we intend to go round another time. The church... More

Arrived just after 11am on a Sunday & the overflow car parks were already being used. The stables area has a cafe in the restored part & the remaining stables are left decaying containing old farm implements & machinery. The main house is in three stages of its life, the old splendour of when it was built, the parts of... More
