- Mary BLondon, United Kingdom70 contributionsGet the back story of HarrogateAn interesting visit with lots of good videos that give good background and much additional information. Worth a visit as they explain a lot about how and why Harrogate grew up. There need to be many more signs in the town about how to find it though!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 October 2023
- Andrew TDurham, United Kingdom13 contributionsGreat little museum telling the story of Harrogate as a spa town. This is a great museum and very Tardis-like inside as it’s much bigger than it appears. It tells the story of Harrogate and its growth as a spa town. Lots of information panels and lots to see inside with recreated shops showing a number of exhibits. It ends in the dispensing room where the spa waters were originally served and you can smell one of the more sulphurous waters. Only takes about 30-40minutes to tour but it’s only a few pound and worth it to support a lovely museum. Only downsides is that you can’t actually taste the waters (I’ve been in similar places where you still can), and you can’t get into the room with the springs although you can see them through a glass floor.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- northerntraveller2554 contributionsGreat little museumFairly small museum, a few minutes walk from the centre of Harrogate detailing the history of the town back to the Victorian era. Well set out, interesting artefacts and descriptions, and a treat to smell the sulphur water! Doesn't cost much to yet in, lasts around 40 minutes or so. Lovely little experience.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 March 2024

Situated in the heart of Harrogate it has a small entrance fee. We were greeted by a very enthusiastic volunteer (who later greeted us at an art gallery!) Well laid out with plenty of information regarding the history and growth of Harrogate as people came to take the waters - you must smell the sulphur! Such an interesting small museum with lovely welcoming. enthusiastic staff. Loved the displays and videos - such in depth information about Harrogate and the spa bars and treatments. Lots of curious little items, and it was interesting to find out more. I especially loved the old photographs, giving different views of old Harrogate. We spent just 50 minutes here, but it is not expensive at ÂŁ3.80 price tag. I expected a museum of the pump house, however this is just a very small museum of various objects. A penny farthing, some dresses from an earlier decade and some Egyptian objects. Finally you can look down through glass to the level below and see the well.
Some people behind us did not even continue the 100 metre walk around the exhibits and just walked out.
We were greeted by a man with his mask round his chin and paid ÂŁ3 each.

lovely compact museum with surprising displays, such as the Egyptian artefacts. It is small so need to be very careful if other people also visiting (social distancing) and this did minimise time to look at and read about displays. Staff very welcoming

Great little museum. Very interesting exhibition with loads of interesting information on all fronts of the story of the building and Harrogate SPA history. The staff were super friendly, very helpful and very knowledgeable - they really made us fee welcomed here (far superior experience to other places where all one can interact with are virtual displays). Very well priced and packed with content but can be seen in a short time so it’s not exhausting either.

This is a small museum (so not overwhelming or exhausting) which really brings back Harrogate in its heyday. At present there is an exhibition about workers in Harrogate when the spa was at its most popular at the turn of the 20th century and throws a different slat on life behind the scenes of the grand hotels. There is also a book available which is really informative and puts flesh on the bones.

It was £10 for a family of us to go in (2 adults , 3 children ). We thought this was reasonable as we were expecting a big museum telling us about the pump house and harrogate’s history . We were wrong - the museum was quite small and not very interesting, mainly mannequins with clothes on. All of the history learnt we already knew from the tour we took earlier on . There was a place in the museum where you could see the sulfur well but it was hard to see due to the glair in the glass it also wasn’t labelled clearly. Overall could’ve been better

The Royal Pump Room Museum is a very interesting place to visit. The person selling the tickets is very informative about the Museum and the area. It is not very big inside but there are a lot of exhibits and details to see. It is also good value for money.

Not aware that you need to book. Just pay on entry as we did back in June even though signage at the door indicated pre-booking necessary. Place was not that busy.
