- LauraDaveJamesSolihull, United Kingdom5,070 contributionsExcellent StaffWe had previously bought all inclusive museum tickets that had a picture of this tower on the brochure. However, the tower is not included in the deal. It cost extra to visit. We were glad that we did pay our entry fee as both the building and exhibitions were very interesting, and the staff were very helpful and informative.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- BigTool455 contributionsQuick self-guided tour.Despite suffering from castle fatigue after a week in Ireland, this stop was refreshing. The display artifacts and information panels are focused on this particular site and the town of Waterford. The self-guided tour can easily be done in 30-45 minutes, which is exactly how much time we needed for a line of rain showers to pass. And yes, after the tour we looked for, and found, the cannonball damage in the tower's exterior wall.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2024
- PamKillarney, Ireland2 contributionsSinead‘s customer service was exceptionalVisited Reginald Tower in Waterford on the 28th and 29th of September 2024. I found the experience exceptional! In particular Sinead one of the staff at reception on the day was extremely helpful to me, she expired everything clearly was so informative and professional , After visiting I was trying to find a bus stop to make my way back to my bed and breakfast. It was pouring rain outside and Sinead went to the bother of taking me outside and showing me exactly where the bus stop was. Her sense of Customer Service her kindness and professionalism was exceptional, thank you, Sinead. PamVisited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 September 2024

We visited Reginald's Tower in April as part of our 2 week Ireland holiday . Named after the Viking ho founded Waterford , it is an imposing structure that you cannot really miss if you strolling around the waterfront.
There is a parking area across the road , so easily accessible along with a few other well known landmarks like the Clocktower.
Worth a quick short visit especially if you into Viking history

When in Irelands oldest city you must visit the oldest civic building in the country too.
With Covid restrictions in place the displaces have been removed so that there is only an informative film left for you to watch on the top floor along with the building itself. As such its currently free to enter.
The staff are a wealth of information , just watch your head on the low ceilings and stone work

Full of history and interesting stories at a reasonable price. There are quite a few steep steps up to the floors above but each floor is well set out with historical displays and one with a large screen showing a short film on the history of the tower. It was a shame that the roof top was closed as the views across the harbour would have been good but al the same a definite recommendation to visit this great building.

Reginalds Tower is a stunning defensive tower at the apex of the Viking Trianlge in Waterford. As other reviews have said here already it is currently closed for renovations but it is still absolutely worth visiting just to see it's exterior and of course the wooden boat monument beside it.
I fully intend to come back and see the interior when it reopens but don't let the fact that you cant climb ut stop you from walking along to where the quays turn to see it.

Having walked past the tower at dusk and read a few of the information boards in the area on Sunday evening, we had to visit on Monday morning. Surprisingly, it was free to enter but this was due to the recent removal of the artefacts (gone for a clean I think). The tower was a lot bigger inside than you can imagine, a shame the artefacts were not there. However, on the top floor (very steep winding stone steps) there was a great film to watch showing the history of Waterford and how the tower has been used over its many years.
The two ladies at the desk were very knowledgeable of the tower, Waterford and the surrounding area. In fact one lady, recommended we visited Tramore and the coastal path, such a stunning place, thank you!

So glad we went. While the artifacts were not there (having conservation work done), we still enjoyed exploring the tower. The OPW had waived the admission fee because of that. Very enjoyable! Video gave a nice concise history of the settlement.

Currently many of the old artefacts are not housed here so it's free entry. We turned up just as they were closing but they kindly let us in so we dashed up to the top and had a quick look at everything.
It's quite a tough climb to the top on windy, steep steps

I did explore Reginald’s tower on my own, which actually Ireland’s oldest civic building. The first tower here was built by the Vikings after 914, then was re-built by the Anglo-Normans in the 12th century with the two top floors added in the 15th century. On the top, you can watch an informative video about the early history of Waterford and it’s an amazing place to start your exploration of the Viking triangle here.

How does this bode with someone who is claustrophobic? Thank you!
Written 30 January 2017
Hi, as mentioned it depends on how your claustrophobic tolerance is. The stairwell is narrow and round, each of the floors are wide open, so no problem there.

Do you need to purchase tickets in advance, and also how long is the tour?
Written 1 July 2016
Hi, you cannot purchase tickets in advance for Reginald's Tower, you can for the Medieval Museum and the Bishop's Palace.
The tour of Reginald's Tower takes about 45 minutes.

For what it was, a fortress, there is not much else to show you. It was amazing how the stairs
were built, the lookouts and the different levels. I thought it was worth seeing.
