Pretty good group of museums. The medieval museum was the largest and a bit hard to figure out at first. The others are smaller, you should be able to do them all in a few hours. There was an optional 3D Viking experience as well, which was pretty fun, I believe it was 10 euros per person.

This was the highlight of our trip to Waterford and it's probably the oldest part of the city with the most historic sites. It's got the Reginald tower and ancient churches along with some Vikings sites in this area. If you are in Waterford then this is the best way to start your trip with plenty of things to see.

I actually took a tour of the Viking triangle which basically covered everything I wanted to see in the area. I believe the tour was called the Epic Tour of the Viking Triangle. It was a nice walking tour that was only like 10 euros.

This is a really compact historic area with a great variety of museums so you can spend a day & cover a lot of history from the Vikings to the history of civil service. The walking tour was great. Every one in the precinct is really helpful & hospitable.

We visited on a bright spring day. This is a nice walk and 1/2 day adventure. There are several museum options, cute shops, and options for a delicious coffee and homemade food. It is across the street from the Waterford tour and a nice way to round out the day.

I have been visiting Waterford City for 40 years and I have always been interested in the city's significant historical past. There are a wide range of sights and attractions associated with its Viking heritage and relatively recently has been referred to as Waterford Viking Triangle. One of the most absorbing places of interest is Reginald's Tower which houses the Viking Museum. The Viking Triangle is a must see whilst in Waterford City. It was wet and rainy on my most recent visit but I was still able to explore the area despite the miserable weather.

Although there is some repetition this is an interesting half-day wander back through Waterford's history. We started at Reginald's Tower (entry €3 adult) on the corner of the Quay and the Mall where you can climb up the tower (mind your head on the spiral staircase) and view Viking and later artefacts and models of the city. There is an animated history running in a continuous loop which lasts about 10 minutes. Having been there before we did not wait for the official guided tour.
We then went round the corner to the brand new Medieval Museum (€7 adult - a little pricey for what was there). We were given an audio guide as we declined the official tour, but this worked erratically, so we read the information displayed which worked as well for us. The bishops wine cellar was interesting. Other things we liked were Henry VIII's hat and sword, given to the city as a mark of favour, a medieval brooch and the cloth of gold vestments. There isn't an enormous amount in here but there is lots of information around the exhibits. Next door are the Bishops Palace and cathedral which I have separately reviewed.
The Theatre Royal is next door on the Mall. It is a beautiful building which houses the municipal art collection (free) which although not extensive, contains some lovely pieces including a bust by Joseph Epstein and paintings by WB Yeats as well as some more modern European works displayed in elegant surroundings. Upstairs is the Cafe Royal with reasonably priced, delicious food served in comfortable, modern surroundings by a very friendly helpful lady. I was thrilled to find gluten-free options on the menu, including the most delicious soup and bread I have tasted in a long while.
We did a brief walk around the Waterford Crystal showroom, but having visited the Waterford Crystal factory when it was still open, declined the tour. However, as this includes watching glassworkers producing pieces it is probably something first time visitors would find interesting.
We then wandered back to the picturesque ruins of Greyfriars. Guided tours of this are apparently available from Reginald's Tower, but as we were feeling weary at this point we decided to just admire it though the fence.
We then wandered back along the narrow lane of the High Street (housing four excellent restaurants) towards the main shopping area of the city.

This is a great way to get an understanding of who the Vikings really were. These people were much more than what is seen on TV and in the movies. The Viking Triangle is the oldest Viking settlement in Ireland. Starting with the tower and strolling through the rest of the triangle you get a sense of these people. Not to be missed if you are in Waterford. Aside from the history the triangle offers good restaurants and museums.

We were only in Waterford for the day. We chose to do the the self guided walking tour. Signage is great. There are guides around to answer questions. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. Great photo opportunities. There are nice cafes in the area serving the traditional Irish breakfast.
It's inexpensive and worth it.
Enjoy!!!!

We took a walking tour of the Viking Triangle in Waterford while traveling on our 20th anniversary. I wish I had taken a notepad or a small recorder, as the interesting bits of history we well worth documenting, especially how the Viking tower was erected (human hair and blood among the ingredients).

Will be in Waterford for 1 day on a cruise, do we need to rent a car to do this tour or is everything within walking distance?
