A Major Achievement, well worth a visit if you are a steam Buff.

A major achievement by Jackie and his family, who have restored 3/4 mile of the old West Clare Railway and one of it's engines. It was a shame that the day we visited was not a... read more

Travelled from Tralee on the Shannon river ferry with steam enthusiast family, so got there early before published opening time of 1pm to 4pm which gave us time to eat our lunch. Unfortunately as the clock approached 1pm there was no sign of anyone at the railway or any sign to indicate they were closed that day unfortunately. We stayed... More

We visited on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend when fortunately the steam engine was in service. OK, the place is a bit ramshackle, but for me that greatly added to the charm. It was a much more authentic than so many glossy, artificial 'experiences' that pass for heritage attractions these days. Jackie Whelan is a brilliant host and... More

A major achievement by Jackie and his family, who have restored 3/4 mile of the old West Clare Railway and one of it's engines. It was a shame that the day we visited was not a steam day (we were aware of this), but Jackie's story of the recovery of the line was almost worth the visit alone. It's a... More

The Slieve Callan restoration project is and was a magnificent example of what one man can do in the face of adversity. I was outraged by some of the negative comments on here from people who clearly had no idea the amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into restoring this magnificent piece of rolling stock. The fact that... More

This is an attraction that will have children and dads having a great day out. Ride on the train with Diesel engine was very enjoyable. There are special days for the steam locomotive. Staff have a real love of this restoration project that is still ongoing.

Jackie and his family (with, no doubt help from friends and community) have done a wonderful job preserving this little piece of narrow gauge railway history. I wish them all success in the future. Peter Wise.

On one of the few wet & miserable Saturday's this summer we wondered where we could picnic. Arriving at the WCR we asked if we could buy some tea & have our picnic in the dining car/cafe ... we were warmly invited and had a lovely time, then explored the old railway station and the beautiful Slieve Callan. Our guide/driver... More

One of our party was particularly looking forward to this visit being a bit of a train buff here in England. Sadly, there was nothing to be excited about mainly because it wasn't open and didn't look as if it was open for business. Admittedly we arrived late but even so there was no evidence anyone had been there that... More

The family had a great time recently on the WCR. The children really enjoyed the trip on the train. We hope to return in the near future .

Went on a Monday when you can enjoy the steam train experience. Great to see “Slieve Callan” restored and functioning. Short journey in the original carriage gives you an idea of what it was like to travel in this way. Driver and his assistant have so many stories to tell. Small but fascinating museum and a coffee shop are adjacent.... More
