About
The magnificent ruin of a great Royal Palace set in its own park and beside Linlithgow Loch. A favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens from James I (1406-37) onward. Building work commissioned by James I, III, IV, V and VI can be seen. The great hall and chapel are particularly fine. James V (1512) and Mary Queen of Scots (1542) were both born here. Surfaces inside the Palace are mainly stone slabs and small cobbles in the courtyard. The ticket office, shop and courtyard are accessible to visitors with disabilities. More mobile visitors should be able to access the first floor which forms the main part of the property. Access is available to Linlithgow Loch and extensive peel (park).

- E C4 contributionsMost definitely worth itMost definitely worth a visit! Although some websites may call it "ruins", don't expect to see anything like that! There's so much in there, grand halls and winding staircases and galleries and great views from the windows! I thought I'd spent half an hour maxVisited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 October 2023

The staff were so wonderful and helpful. On approach we were greeted and directed where to park as I have mobility issues. Many thanks for making my visit easier. A must visit here to see the Birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Margaret from SydneyVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023
- Richard BCupar, United Kingdom480 contributionsOne of Scotland's most significant palacesIt is impossible not to be impressed by the amazing Linlithgow Palace. This was my first visit and I was overwhelmed by the structures. It was a joy to have the freedom to climb and explore this beautiful structure and soak up the history in static presentations throughout. The setting is tranquil and accessible and one of the highlights for me was having the freedom to explore independently and soak up the views. The visit offers value for money and a not to be forgotten couple of hours.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023

Although renovations are still ongoing there is much to explore. You could get lost wandering around. It was just awesome. I wanted to visit as I love old castles anyway but this was also used in Outlander 🥰 The staff were so friendly too.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 December 2023
- FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand1,132 contributionsA Maze ThingA palace you can literally crawl all over (and spend some time doing so) and get lost amidst a maze of passageways and stairs. Also provides great views over the local area. A great place to explore and learn details about Mary Queen of Scots birthplace.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- LouEastbourneLondon, United Kingdom103 contributionsLovely visitLinlithgow Palace is well worth a visit. If based in Edinburgh, it is approximately a 20 minute train ride and then around a five minute walk to reach the palace. I spent approximately 2 hours exploring. There is a small gift shop in the entrance and one toilet at the palace. There is a lot of walking to do and steps so in my opinion quite a physical visit. For a gentler visit there is a loch in the grounds and worth a stroll around. It has a very peaceful feel to it. I very much enjoyed my visit and would highly recommend it.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 May 2024
- Karen BFEdmonton, Canada685 contributionsSpectacular ruins - on the way to Edinburgh!Stop here first for a quieter, more immersive castle experience. Still undergoing some renovations and upgrades, this castle is spooky, dreary, festive and airy all at once. Picture yourself in the dungeon, climb the stairs to the lookouts! Very accommodating staff, and easy access. If you have Historic Scotland Pass this one is covered.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 June 2024
- Michael N131 contributionsImpressed by the scaleThis was a very enjoyable visit to the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Good information panels and a small museum complement the tour. An audio guide via an app was difficult to download but did not have a detrimental effect on our visit. You will need a degree of physical fitness if you want to get up and down all the towers and floors. The parkland and lake are a nice spot for a walk or picnic. - jacm949Dumbarton, United Kingdom143 contributionsHistory visit!Palace is in the centre of the very pleasant town of Linlithgow. Only about 5mins from train station & there is parking at venue or in town. Very interesting visit. Learned a lot about early Scottish history. The palace is a ruin but is well preserved so you get a good idea of how the rooms looked. Lovely grounds & Linlithgow loch a bonus. Self guided tour but there are plenty of information boards. Would recommend a visit.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 September 2024
- J. SGrimsby, United Kingdom120 contributionsStunning place to visitAbsolutely stunning place, visited on our 30th anniversary & it did not disappoint. The fountain is breathtaking. I'm glad we took a pew in the middle to admire more as we realised we had missed one tower out so went back up. Friendly staff & huge grounds to walk. We also missed the church open hours sadly, which was told is run by volunteers but enjoyed the whole visit.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2024

We called on a cold March day with showers of rain.
I liked the fact that there were lots of information notices spread around the castle and background text about the history and families living there including James v and Mary Queen of Scots who were both born there. Explaining about some of the ruined parts helps people to imagine how the place might have looked centuries ago. There were various quizzes that might amuse kids or help them to look out for certain objects. I was very impressed.

We visited here as part of our staycation! This is a must when in or around Linlithgow. There is a 1 way system in place and prebooking is required due to covid19. The signage is really well set up and the history of this place is so interesting.

Visited on our tour of Scottish countryside. Lovely place. The palace is ruined and now under construction, but the architecture and location on the lake feeds your imagination. Scenery and grounds are lovely and neighboring St. Michaels’s church has beautiful stained glass windows.
Lots of history here and well worth a stop.

Here you will visit the ruins of a castle, and it is still beautiful
Located in the middle of a lawn and overlooking a lake, start the tour sitting on the grass, admire the landscape, without rushing or time.
There are several spaces to be explored, all with information written on signs, which makes the visit very beneficial.
You can climb to the top of a tower, but be prepared for the wind.
It appears that Outlander was filmed there.

We loved our visit. The palace is ruins but you can get around each floor, certain parts are not accessible and you can actually get to the roof and look over the loch. Some of the palace is having some restoration works so there is some scaffolding, it did not affect our enjoyment or visit in anyway. We thought it was such a peaceful location.

It's an amazing place. Absolutely stunning. A beautiful ruin of a once magnificent Palace. An amazing maze of walls and chambers with a beautiful old fountain and a view of the lake. Well-preserved walls of the rooms, which lack ceilings, but have survived since the 15th century. It is located in a beautiful small town. It has not been restored, just maintained. So you can let your imagination run wild. The place is very charming. Beautiful palace, worth seeing.

On our last days on holiday in Scotland we could not fail to visit this majestic palace. Setting also from the novel Outlander as Leoch Prison. It is immense, we arrived almost at closing time, and with very few people it was almost scary, but we loved it, Top-rated we have visited!! See if they can finish restoring a part they have left!!
For us, a hidden gem that you cannot miss!!!

Although a ruin, Linlithgow Palace let's you use your imagination to create a vision of what the Palace would have looked like, and this is such an interesting historical site to visit.
Set just off the High Street, it's amazing that this place appears out of nowhere, I used my sat nav and thought it must be taking me to the wrong place, but it wasn't. One piece of advice if driving - follow the cobble road up towards the Palace, drive through the gates and you will find the free parking mentioned on the website.
We, 2 adults and 2 kids (9 & 11), really enjoyed our visit. No specific way to go around the Palace so you can find yourself doubling back and going through the same rooms. We went all the way to the top of the tower and looked out across the Loch and town, it was brilliant.
The site may be difficult for those with accessibility problems as there is a lot of uneven ground and spiral starcases.
All in all we had a great time. We spent around 1.5hrs going around the site.

The nearby church was closed but we visited the palace. The courtyard is so beautiful and you can visit the first floor from any of the four towers. Once you are there put your imagination to work and wonder. Very nice experience. Some construction is taking place but not harmful for the experience.

Planning to buy tickets on the door, but is there any advantage to buying them online beforehand?
Written 8 June 2024
You'll be fine. The palace doesn't get too busy, unless there's a number of Outlander coach groups arriving all at once - or you plan on visiting on Jousting Day. What I would say though, is a Historic Environment Scotland membership is pretty cheap if you plan on visiting other things (nearby Edinburgh Castle, Blackness Castle, or Doune Castle, for example)
Written 10 June 2024
I understand now there is no visitor access to the palace. Do you need to pay if we just access the grounds and the loch? When will the palace access open?
Written 6 July 2022
I'm on a road trip, and unfortunately will get to the palace only after closing time.
Is it worth a stop just to take some pictures from the outside after it's closed?
Written 9 August 2019
Yes as long as you get there before dark.

Hola, queria saber cuanto se tarda en visitar el palacio? Gracias
Written 26 October 2018
Se puede viditar perfectamente en 1 hora.

Cannot remember seeing any dogs within the palace area however the open grounds and the adjacent loch area I imagine would be a dog walking location

Are there any restaurants in walking distance to this palace? Thanks for answering! :)
Written 6 October 2017
Yes, we toured the castle and than walked into town. We decided on a restored Post Office turned Pub and had a good lunch and a friendly bartender. Also it's a short walk to the train station.
