- DakiKibeGreater London, United Kingdom62 contributionsNice way to spend an afternoonThis was a really nice pit stop. The guide, Janaka, was very knowledgeable about plants and spices and explained the medicinal and culinary uses of everything in a lot of detail. A good place to buy spices and ayurvedic herbal oils.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2024
- JoJoLuton, United Kingdom1,006 contributionsPart of a tour groupWe came here as part of a mercury holidays tour. It was a quick tour of the spice garden, a demonstration of some products and options to have shoulder massage- and then a pop in the shop. No pressure to buy, I thought the prices were a little higher than expected but you don’t have to purchase anything. We also stopped for lunch over the road( owned by same people I think) which was lovely buffet.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024
- Christine Marshall118 contributionsSRI Lanka tourThis was a very interesting tour of spices. You are guided round the spice garden and he explains each spice as you go round. Then you have drink of like a spice drink. Then you are given a 10 minute massage of the head or neck. You can buy the spices.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- CAMLondon, United Kingdom670 contributionsAn interesting place if you want to know more about the spices used in Sri Lankan cookingWe stopped off here for a walk through the spice garden with a guide. Sure, the guide wants you to buy some products at the end of the talk but Sri Lanka has had a recent economic crash so this is entirely to be expected. We found the talk interesting and we enjoyed the opportunity to sample many of the spices in their natural form - mainly through smelling the wonderful smells of things like lemongrass and sandalwood.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024

We did the spice garden tour expecting to learn about the plants, spices and use in cooking. Instead we were subjected to an endless sales based rant about how you need to use particular spices that they sell to be healthy. This continues with a shameless sit down demonstration all based on Ayurvedic medicine principles.
The very brief cooking demonstration taught us nothing new and the subsequent dining in the restaurant was average at best. Service was terrible and prices were high compared to the many good restaurants we have eaten at.
Do not waste your time and money!

Incredible tour and explanation about spices from Selva but end it there. All of the potions for sale look really sketchy. I bought cinnamon sticks but when I got them home and opened them up they look really rotted and gross inside. I knew I was going to pay tourist price but I expect the product to be viable. Don't bother buying anything. I didn't receive a hard sell or any weird massage that others are talking about.

We stopped here when travelling from Dambulla to Kandy. You'll get a tour around a tropical garden full of herbs and spice plants. The friendly and knowledgeable guide will identify each of them, show you examples of them both growing naturally and processed. The guide will also explain the medicinal benefits of each. This tour takes the standard format - free tour followed by a short sit down presentation of products after which you have the option to purchase some at the little shop by the entrance (it's fine, there's absolutely no pressure to buy anything unless you want to). There's also the option of a free head and neck massage at the end of the presentation. Altogether, I found the garden tour really quite informative.

I visited the spice garden as part of an excursion arranged by my tour operator. The walk and talk through the garden was informative and interesting. We then had the chance of a free shoulder massage before visiting the shop if wished. I had a health problem which I discussed with the guide and he suggested a product which I am very happy to say has helped me and I hope to order more. I can highly recommend it.

This is a huge tourist trap. But even more scary is the fact that the products in the shop Are Not What They Say They Are. This is a classic case of switch scam. What they show you on the tour may be real natural product but the shop is full of imitation items and my husband and son bought a cream capable of removing hair “even the Buddhist monks use it” but when we got back to the hotel we realised it was cheap “immac”. Smelt of Ammonia. The detox pills I bought I don’t dare to try. The reviews all seem to say the same. This place needs shutting down!!!! Disgraceful

This was a lovely place to visit, very interesting to see spices which we only buy off the shelf in supermarkets grown naturally. The sales pitch as described by previous is relatively mild, and gentle. easy to say no and walk away. I was interested and the in house guide described a variety of ayurvedic remedies, some I remember my grandmother using on us. I had the massage and the very nice man gave me the full neck and upper back routine. My skin felt fine. I would suggest if people are not used to intense humidity, the friction of a massage with unfamiliar oils may bring out rash. I l got their aloe vera cream. Lovely smell and texture. I also bought some pepper/cinnamon/spice sets as gifts. The products were lovely and everyone in UK is thrilled by the gifts. I can vouch for the quality of the pepper.

It's not a large plantation area, it literally is just a large garden size and the plants/trees they have are merely to show to visitors, not to produce any remedies from on any sort of mass scale (that is done elsewhere). That said (just to set expectations), I found it an extremely interesting visit. I learned so much about the different plants used, how they get grown and what they can be used for as regards treatments. Yes, there is an emphasis on the staff trying to sell you something but I found it was more along the lines of making you aware of the wares rather than being pushy. You don't need to even go in the shop at the end if you don't want to. I did and found many pleasant items to browse through. They call the shop a pharmacy! It was a bit pricier than normal Sri Lankan standards but, as I say, you don't need to look let alone buy. You can also volunteer and get a free massage so overall a really great tour.

Ok visit with the botanist, not so much to see, then a shop at extremely funny expensive prices. Started at 80 euros for 3 little articles to go down to 35, which was also a lot and more expensive than in Europe.
Don’t spend your time here although botanist was nice and friendly. They give a bad image of Sri Lanka towards tourists, elsewhere very welcoming.

Written 21 January 2017
Hi,
If you are accompanied by a guide is for free, but tips are expected. Additionaly after presentation, you will be offered "free" massage after which you will be asked to tip man who did it.... at the end of the whole tour there is obligatiry visit in the shop. I would recomend not to buy anything....
