The Scottish Industrial Railway Centre is the only steam railway in south west Scotland, and only ten miles from Ayr. It is a volunteer run visitor attraction in the Doon valley between Patna and Dalmellington. A limited number of Steam Days are held during the Summer when visitors can take a ride behind one of our industrial steam locomotives, explore the museum and view the model railway. We have a Tea Room, serving teas, coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches and confectionery, and our Shop has many items at pocket money prices to suit our younger visitors. My papa worked at this heritage centre as a miner way back when, and my great grandfather was the manager of the brickworks I believe. So taking my family here was something of a pilgrimage. The museum is well furnished with train and machinery exhibits...More

Great chance to get out in the countryside, get some fresh air and support a great cause! My daughter and I were very lucky to visit this museum when the No. 10 was on its first day out after being brought back to life, and...More

If you're looking for something like the Severn Valley Railway with lots of big steam locomotives and long rides through the countryside, don't bother. This is a small railway manned by enthusiasts with a small steam engine or diesel loco giving short rides. The volunteers...More

Fun for all ages. Although the train ride is short you can travel as many times as you wish. The museum is informative and the staff ( who are all volunteers) are doing their best to upgrade things when they can. The cafe was good...More

With teenagers and younger children the little ones lived it the teenagers did not. Staff were lovely and the train ride was great and the miniature train and Thomas train was fab but not much else aside from rusty old trains but nice enough place...More

At first glance, this attraction is easy to turn one's nose up at. Small, short train rides, and in the middle of seemingly nowhere. Whilst, admittedly, it's not a day-filler, and as such, I wouldn't recommend going terribly far out of your way only to...More

Visited the Scottish Industrial Railway centre when in the Ayr area, after a long drive, we found the site, it is well sign posted on steaming days. The site is slightly run down, but this is the fault of the derelict ironworks next door. The...More

Liked the nostalgic feel of going back to the steam trains and the works involved in the running of the coal companies. It is also the scene of the Channel 4 Danny McCaskill video Concrete Circus.

A nice, if rather basic, industrial museum with the bonus of unlimited steam train rides. The available track is quite short (half a mile?), but with unlimited rides available for the admission price, this is good value. £3 concession , £5 adult, £13 family ticket. Fascinating...More

First impressions were that it seemed small and a bit like a scrap yard but we gave it a chance. My mother is in a wheel chair and the younger of my 2 sons in a push chair so we thought we may have trouble...More
