Elgin Cathedral, also known as the ‘Lantern of the North’ is a majestic, historic ruin situated in Elgin. Elgin Cathedral is one of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, dating back to the 13th century. Elgin Cathedral has a rich history - it was badly fire damaged in 1390 following an attack by Robert III's brother Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, who was also known as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’. The two towers of the West Front and the Chapter House are intact and open to the public and the climb is rewarded with magnificent views of the town of Elgin. The top of the tower has an open viewing platform with information boards highlighting the visible landmarks. The ceiling of the chapter house is considered to be one of the country’s finest octagonal structures and those with a keen eye may still see traces of gold paint. Joint ticket with Spynie Palace available: Adult £9 Child £5.40 Concession £7

I’d never heard of Elgin Cathedral. The ruins are a must see if you are in the area The scale of the remaining walls, the carved stones and the informative display areas are impressive. Worth the £6.50 entrance fee

Elgin cathedral is not the cheapest place to visit but it is well worth it. The building is obviously now well looked after with explanations of the stonework etc dotted around. There are exhibits on each level of the tower which are very interesting, with...More

Such an imposing building right in the heart of Elgin. We liked the exhibitions tucked into the ground floor. It was especially surprising to see how colourful a statue on a tomb would originally be.

The museum is really thoughtfully laid out. Visitors climb the towers to see exhibits on various aspects of the architectural process of building this great cathedral. You'll learn about stone masons, the various motifs and how a cathedral & surrounding town functioned. There is a...More

Unique place to visit. Very eerie in places, where you can peer into dark enclosed spaces. The exhibitions on each of the tower levels were informative and gave a great insight into the history of the cathedral. Highly recommend a visit

Very ruined but lots to see, will need a raincoat on a wet day! You can go up the front towers for an excellent photo from the top.

Unfortunately it was closed when we arrived, but we could get some Pictures through the fence as well. I am sure it would be interesting to go inside as well.
