Description:

A romantic fairy-tale castle that has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor...

A romantic fairy-tale castle that has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor since 1370, Cawdor has evolved into a charming family mansion and the most outstanding of stately homes. The dramatic medieval tower, dungeon, turrets, battlements and drawbridge, belie an enchanting interior of fine art, tapestries and furniture which create the warm and welcoming feel of a home rather than a museum. The castle, set in stunning grounds with three beautiful and varied gardens, is surrounded by the magnificent Cawdor Big Wood, one of the finest woodland areas in Europe, threaded with colour coded nature trails to explore.Visitors are invited to enjoy a delicious lunch or tea with home-baking from our mouth-watering menu in the courtyard café, then browse the exciting range of gifts and goodies in our three shops and, time permitting, have fun on the putting green and short 9-hole golf course which provides enjoyment for all standards.

Shakespear's "MacBeth" has multiple myths woven into the play, and Cawdor Castle's Late Lord Cawdor once said, "I wish the Bard had never written his dammed play!" This having been said, the connection to this castle is with the prophecy of the 3 witches who said MacBeth would become Thane of Cromarty, a very old title that began here. The... More

A beautiful castle, the inside you can view seems relatively small. The landscaping is very nice and you should spend some time on the ground. There is also a small cafeteria inside the Castle

It was such an amazing countryside escape at the Castle, which boasts the extensive grounds and magnificent decorations. The guided staff were extremely kind and accommodating. Travelled there by a privately hired taxi because of the Castle's secluded location. Please prepare at least 3 hours to explore the whole area because nature is all around you! Wonderful escape indeed!!! The... More

What time of year is it is a key question for visiting. Nothing better than going when the gardens are in full bloom. We visited however last after this and we still had a very lovely time. There's something to see all year round but with the sun shining you can get lost for hours just wandering and enjoying.

This was a lovely place to visit, National Trust, and a good few things to look at. The restaurant was rather expensive but the sandwiches and hot drinks were worth it. Lovely little shop.

Thank you for visiting. For information Cawdor Castle is a privately owned Castle and Lady Cawdor Lives in the Castle from October to April while we are closed. We are therefore not a National Trust property. More

The castle itself is inhabited from October till April by the family who owns it, so can only be visited part of the year. No audio guide, but some printed information in all rooms where public can enter. Restaurant with small but decent menu. Well tended walled garden. Maze with Minotaur in the centre. Well signposted paths of different length... More

An actual castle where lady cawdor presides part of the year. She was in while we were there. Great little tour that give you a nice history of the cawdor family. Don't miss the beautiful gardens. Even stop and play a round of golf.

This was a very special castle as the family still lives in part of it during the year. The castle itself is beautifully decorated with art work that is both a mix of historical and modern pieces. The grounds are spectacular even with it being late September when we visited. The highlight was eating in the Castle's cafe where we... More

Self guided tour of the castle so you can take as long as you like to read the amusing room information cards - well done to the writer. Interesting story about the tree growing through the castle. Gardens are lovely - look out for sculptures and go down to the woods to find the chainsaw carved bench.
