We are a museum set in Cameron Square which is just off of the centre of Fort William High Street. We have eight rooms packed with fascinating objects, from treasure from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada galleon to the bagpipes played at Bannockburn in 1314. Whether its archaeology, natural history, warfare and weaponry, highland crofting life, costumes and charms, victorian times, silver, coins and medals, or even the history of mountain rescue, it can all be found at the West Highland Museum.

When it's a free museum you've got nothing to lose. I found the Commando Room the most interesting, it's interactive and so interesting. I think took a trip up to where the barracks had been just to see the environment that the soldiers lived in. Will definitely do some reading around this.

Excellently laid out on several floors with friendly helpful staff. I'll never forget the "beating" table! Most of the articles are related to the military but the museum certainly merits a visit.

Stumbling across this excellent little museum passed a worthwhile hour for me. Being an ex soldier the Commando Exhibition was of great interest . The other exhibits covering archaeology, mountaineering, highland life, the Jacobites and natural history also proved extremely interesting. The museum, fussed over and cared for by two sharp as razors ladies is smart and as relevant as one... More

We were welcomed by a friendly gentleman who explained the sequence of displays. What we subsequently found was breathtaking. Too much to go into detail of each room, but I found the Commando exhibits and in particular, the room dedicated to the Jacobite uprising, inspirational. I have always been interested in this particular period of British history and to see... More

If you are into army history this is a great hour or two but we are not that keen. Upstairs there are 2 paintings on objects that can only be seen when looked at a certain angle and I found these quite fascinating. The museum is free and warm on a wet afternoon so if you have the time do... More

We happened to stumble on the West Highland Museum and so glad we did. It was informative and incredibly interesting. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and rightfully proud to be there. Keep up the good work! (Don't miss the secret portrait!)

This is a superb small museum. So much variety of subject matter in the different exhibitions all done well and with lots of interesting information provided to support the exhibits. The commando room and the geological video explaining the formation of this part of scotland were my highlights. No entry charge but worth a good donation.
